How do you stop perma stealth Thieves?
The poor rabbit…
See, the thing about stealth is you can’t do anything in it. Permastealth doesn’t exist, it will always be sporadic. That said, role a ranger if you want hard counterplay.

Guys.. sigh the original post mentioned how thieves don’t need a nerf, players just need to learn their counters. I main a thief. I agree. I have fought a TON of horrible players who blindly run around and swing hammers trying to “counter” me. I have fought (far fewer, but still some) very skilled players of almost every class now who have lasted up to 25 minutes in a single duel as they were aware how to counter stealth. Every class has a way to counter thief, but the “trick” is EXPERIENCE. There’s no magical Book of All Things Holy on the forums that’s going to say do THIS to counter a thief. If you really want to kill a stealth thief, roll a thief, figure out how they work, and learn what your own counters are. Then just apply those counters offensively and you may win :P
I originally played guardian most of the time and got SICK of these backstab thieves always killing me. I made a thief, did some pvp, and after I learned started to enjoy it. I now main thief and know my mechanical counter from any other class, including other thieves (being a D/D thief). This is indeed knowledge you should probably read up on and I will be happy to give anyone answers if you message me either on forums or in game but.. I still stand by my latter reasoning being that the biggest counter to a thief is having played one and knowing how they work. Thieves have loop holes in terms of defensive capabilities. Find them and exploit them.
Jesus… people never cease to amaze me.
First the complaints were by players that have died to thieves, and how it’s unfair…
Now it’s players complaining about how it’s unfair for sieged weapons… how it’s unfair to sieged weapons that we can CnD till they die…
So… are we not allowed to kill unattended siege weapons? O.o other classes seem to do it and faster too… yeah CnD’ing and stealthing the siege weapon to death is unfair.
:\ Keep going guys… I thought that the complaints would cover ALL the traits+skills… but you guys found another interesting angle, crying on behalf of NPCs….
I will add to this though, I think it’s unfair too…
I once saw a thief CnD on a rabbit, critting him (or her, poor rabbit) for over 50k, the rabbit was unable to do anything or react, it attempted to hop a foot away after the stab but that was in vein. The CnD not only killed the rabbit… but stealthed, yes STEALTHED! the thief. Ridiculous… And it gets even worse! The thief backstabbed an unsuspecting fly for +70k. The fly wasn’t even remotely aware that the thief was around and it died without being given a chance to fight back.
I believe that both the rabbit and the fly deserve justice! Let the flies and rabbits have counter play against the thief.
Yours truely,
Zero Day
(I was clever, I didn’t use the word “nerf”)
HA HA!
this one time I c&d a rabbit and it died in one shot…. OP!!
I found the culprit that killed the rabbit and the fly!
BAN HIM! BAN HIM OUTRIGHT,
MUCH UNFAIR
SO STEALTH
WOW
(I mean like, let’s not nerf anything or mention the word since people get pesky about it… and counter-playing? eh too hard… Banning… yup.. Banning stealthers is where it’s at guys…)

Wanna see the funniest thing ever? Drop a stealth trap. Especially if you’re a stealth class, mesmer or thief, they freak out lol.

Look everyone, the other class people complain about being totally OP is OP…
Permastealth is possible, with blinding powder, SR, smokescreen, dagger mainhand/shortbow. It’s not really useful for anything but scouting, but it’s very possible.
Elementalist – Necromancer – Warrior
Thieves don’t realize how much the rendering buff aids them, with 1-2s windows to attack then disappear again. By the time a player gets their bearings, having lost target, the Thief is off again in a puff of smoke.
What other class’s “counter” involves spamming CC’s and AoE’s in hopes of getting lucky? At least with Mesmer’s they lack the amount of Evade and escapes available.
A class that can reset a fight almost at will, that needs to be taken down by spam and lucky CC’s, or properly timing 99% of their attacks is asking for skill that no other class needs against a class that requires marginal skill to be very effective.
Stealth needs a counter, besides being lucky or extremely skill.
edit: yeah, I’m necro’ing a post =VD=

lol wat
This is so wrong. A mesmer has way more evades/escapes than a permastealth teef. Blurred frenzy, vigor on crit, phase retreat, chaos armor, blink, distortion, and more. A permastealth teef traits 6 into SA and (maybe, but unlikely) 2 into Acro.
It doesn’t feel like my Focus wall is pulling them any where. Does any stealth come with some sort of stability? Lots of times on ledges I’ve seen thief to stealth on a ledge, I focus pull them, and they are still on the ledge…
Stealthing doesn’t give stability. Where exactly on the ledge are you trying to pull them? If it’s at a keep or tower, there is a little wall that keeps players from being entirely pulled off. You need to pull them in certain corners of the building, in order to get them.
Edit: Snap, I just realized this thread was necro’d…

Only when they hit from stealth (and thus become revealed), not when they enter stealth.
1. You AE the area they are likely to be in and drop massive conditions on them (hence why they hate engineers with bomb kit).
2. If you have smoke or blinds, they hate it. If you can also stealth or easily leap away, that is very helpful too.
3. The ability to block their initial combination helps as well.
Overall, the key is anticipating the attack. If they surprise you, they do have the advantage (and should). On the other hand, if they miss, you should have a key advantage.
Even if they clear conditions in stealth, you should try to immobilize or cripple them and then AE those same conditions to limit the distance they can travel in stealth.
In towers, where they can stealth off a wall, it is harder (and I suppose should be).
Staying in stealth costs initiative and/or utilities. It makes them less effective IF you can slow them down or interrupt their flow (blind, smoke, stealth of your own, cripple or immob, pushback etc etc).
