How do you survive as a rifle sniper'
Old thief mentality was all about very active, and up-close play. Honestly have to think and act like a sniper. Not sure how well that will translate for Anet style combat, but there you have it.
Soraya Mayhew – Thief
Melissa Koris – Engie – SF for Life!
Drop it and go back to your previous spec?!
Use withdrawal, roll for initiative, and signet of agility + shadow meld. Makes you a sniper with decent evade
Be mindful about when to engage and do it propperly i.e. if you got quickness on mark maybe time it when you’re ready to burst, and dont go rambo if you see target blocking or whatnot. Trickery line is must imo, which leaves either SA or DA. SA gives great stealth play and repositioning/recovery which with your bursts are your survival skills. With DA you cant play cat and mouse over prolonged time and have a bit more dmg to score kills faster, but its still hard vs competent ppl, esp with passive n active skills to negate ur ranged dmg.
Dont nec burn to much initiative when kiting and running, sometimes u can kite with rifle and having enough resources for rifle#4 is gucci to keep distance, and can work like shortbow tp on ledges.
You can also time bursts in kneel with shadowstep, and when enemy gets close you can shadowstep again. Use all stealth skills you got, like blinding powder and the deadeye stealth utility + elite stealth. Sometimes you can chain like snipers cover kneel stealth after an elite stealth for ex. Roll for ini heal is good for kiting, tho as is hide in shadows.
The way i see it is you always go hard on dmg, but SA traitline makes you more resilient, while DA adds the lil extra dmg for quicker kills. In its current state its hard to justify using rifle in spvp as it’ counter intuitive and prevents you from figthing on point and you risk having to spend too much time in stealth, too slow due to swiftness loss and not really a teamplayer. For WvW its a fun build, but as many have commented on there are quite some QoL changes we could use to make playstyle more thieflike fluid.
I used to be a power ranger, now not sure anymore

Deadeye is exactly what a thief should be – very high damage but highly dependent on a good setup and judging when to strike. Too many thieves have become sloppy and reliant on the daredevil style of endless evades to keep them alive.
I ran into some deadeyes in WvW with my ranger and it went about how I would expect. When I got the drop on them, I tore them to pieces, but when one of them got the drop on me, I had to run my rear off as I got rapidly torn to bits.
It’s a ranged assassin class and one that seems surprisingly well balanced in terms of its vulnerability and damage potential. I`m really looking forward to playing one, but it will always have a different style to longbow ranger and other typical range classes, much as it differs from evade spamming daredevil styles.

Blocks and reflects are literally everwhere at any time.
Deadeye may have it’s niche, but rifle is just borderline useless. Kneel should be a class mechanic, not a dead weapon skill.
There is literally no situation a Daredevil won’t do everything just as good as a deadeye, but most of the time way better.
