Q:
How does Shadow Refuge work?
A:
Shadow Refuge “pulses” it’s effects, each pulse applies the effects once the “hut” over the are indicates that there are pulses remaining. While there are pulses remaining everyone leaving the are of effect (the big circle indicates that area) will be revealed, so stay inside until the hut disappears. The reaveal effect also happens if you get forcefully moved outside by a knockback or pull.
You must stay in the circle for the full duration of the AoE. They set it up that way so it had counters, otherwise it would have been too powerful. Instant reveal coming out of it guarantees you’ll stay inside the AoE, and that the enemies know where to aim.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald

This is enough, basically, stay inside it until it disappears or leave and get revealed
Thanks, that answers my question. I’m still not sure why they decided to make it this way, but it helps with understanding why I’ve gotten revealed “randomly”.
I’ve watched some thief videos where I could have sworn they just Refuge and then walk out of it like nothing’s happening even though the hut is still on, but I’ll take a closer look this time.
I know it pulses and each pulse gives you about 2s of stealth. If you leave early, you should just have a short stealth, what about that needs to be “countered”? Also, they could have made it if you took damage or was forcefully pulled out that would cause a reveal, but walking out of it yourself is the thing that boggles me.

It gives 3s (4s traited) of stealth for 5 pulses. It needs the hard counter because once you’re invisible no one can force you to break it early.
A slew of AoE from a Hammer warrior that will down you faster than you can say Kitten is enough of a reason to get your butt out of there ASAP. I don’t know, I seem to have more problems as a Thief than everyone else complains about. Clearly it’s a L2P issue.
