What changed? I’ve only played thief a few months.

that was back when thieves did more damage than warriors
Mesmer is unfun to play against and does everything better than thieves.
Hoping those two get gutted with nerfs

……just no, that’s a silly amount of info to sift through. I’m sure someone who has been a thief long enough will know and help.
Plus if nobody who knows chimes in I will just google “gw2 thief nerf” in the morning, will be so much easier.
ty though.
hmmm, i dont remember any “dmg” nerf to back stab or crit dmg for pvp, i know it effected wvw and pve. may be the cele meta rised soon after that time so people now a days are a bit tanky-er.
It looked like most of the people he killed were also berserker amulet too. if you 3/4 in to the video the necro hit him with life blast and neally took half of his life away, and even the mesmer burst him down pretty quick too.
In my eye, this is what a d/p thief is meant to do (burst down enemy squishy very fast and move) and i think I eat 6/7k back stabs on my thief too.
gw1 – healing signet/frenzy/charge
If I remember correctly (maybe he’ll correct me) this build had revealed training. If you watch closely, you can see he’ll start a backstab, then steal (to get revealed), then the BS will land with the extra 200 power. For reference, I’ve hit 8.5k on squishy targets with 50036 when I have full bloodlust stacks. I don’t know his runes or the exact build he’s using, but if you have dagger training, RT, and 5 in power and trickery, you end up with an extra 1.32(with full initiative) multipler on that 200 power boost (which is ~8% in itself). Those multipliers really add to the damage.
If I remember correctly (maybe he’ll correct me) this build had revealed training.
The build is 2-6-0-0-6 so no revealed, would be crazy to see the damage if he did use it.
Especially because he really knows how to move/evade/shadowstep like a crazy man.

You are correct. I was thinking of this video from him:
Coloxus D/P Revealed Training Thief PvP: https://youtu.be/vBjdMg7jztA
(Some of the same fights appear on both. Look at 7:00)
(edited by Maugetarr.6823)
That high damage is against a zerker necro.
I’m running 6/6/2 d/p and sometimes 6/6/0/0/2 with s/p.
With d/p I auto attack necrosnat at 100% for 3k. I back stab them for about 9.5k.
Nothing abnormal about this video or anything. You will get kitten d by condis with this build tho.
He has both the beast buffs on Forest of Niflhel. Each gives 50 to all stats, which pushes an executioner backstab up from 8k to 9k
The numbers in that vid are a little higher than you’d expect to see now, but only by a couple percent (he has the might on signet use trait equipped for that near 10k hit).
He was using scholar runes Try it! (Crit Strikes Build)
I can still hit 9-9.8k with backstab as 6/6 build with thrill of crime~ cuz of the signet might, fury and cloak and dagger sometimes taking them to the 50% point for executioner, plus it adds vuln~ at that point the 9k+ is excessive though. It’s a big number and all but the Zerker builds hit like that woulda been dead already anyways with less damage. Heartseeker is same way and just does overkill dmg to low hp targets with executioner. It’s hard to reach that much outside suicidal GC after all the nerfs and it’s an extremely risky build that I personally don’t have fun playing as much.
i think WvW record highest hit on old system was around 30k ?
So, I just tested something out.
Using 6/0/2/0/6 with revealed training, Dagger training, and flanking strikes, along with a force sigil and and scholar runes, I was able to crit the light golem in the mists with an 8.4k backstab using mug-> backstab combo.
Using the traditional panic strike build (6/0/2/0/6) without any force runes, flanking strikes, or scholar runes, I was only able to crit the light golem in the mists for 6k with the same combo.
Now, with a crit strikes build, with dagger training, revealed training, flanking strikes, and executioner, along with a force sigil and scholar runes, I was able to crit a light golem for 9.7k under 50% hp. Adding Assassin’s signet to this, I was able to get 12k damage under 50%.
So in conclusion, you can still get those same numbers, but you have to pretty much sacrifice everything and is fairly situational.

On a level 80 player wearing reasonable gear, yes.
Yes, with the old Assassin’s Signet and the pre-ferocity nerf, I do believe the all-time high was at around 28-29k.
Nothing now will come close to that number, however, as the Assassin’s Signet change alone pretty much cut this down by around a 9k damage margin. There have been some changes which have slightly offset this, but otherwise, this damage cannot be reached. Maximum theoretical hovers around 25k now with ideal circumstances. In most cases for practical concerns, higher-end stabs tend to sit at around 17k.
