[5/8 Champion Titles – Legendary Division] [19k+ AP]
[BEER – Dungeon Riders – Desolation]
I finally reached sapphire division.
Did only solo q on thief and like 7 games on nec for the achievement.
Took me around 80 games to reach the division. 57% winrate.
Faced good and not so experienced premades.
Were often quite close matches.
And oh god i got called out so often.
I started to react with a simple smiley like this :-* [Kiss]. Makes them really go crazy.
Do you guys still q as thief in pvp or did you reroll to something more rewarding and easier? How is your experience so far with raging people?
Best regards!
Shino
playing thief well wins games, too bad most people dont realize that and assume bs. However you cant blame them, a lot of classes have bigger guns…
I’d be curious to look at your profession table but sure this the division is account bound its easy to farm it with a rev or something else and then brag forums with such a screenshot.
From personal experience it is impossible to reach this with solo queue and i play thief for a long time.
Good luck and have fun on your legendary division journey.
I’m done with this game

“gg thief”
“reroll please”
“report thief please”
just to name few~
matches are quite lopsided for me atm, either i am 1v5 (literary, 3 ppl are afk, 1 simply quits) or win 500 to 80
they didn’t reset mmr so i still have quite high mmr which makes climbing up even slower
Here is my prof table.
And the last 10 games.
Well I don’t actually have a lot of time =(. Am on a lot, but I’m usually afk doing something else. My success though is lost my first 9 (4 of which were intentional), won 6, dc’d because life got busy on 1. =) So ye, its fine. Painful and annoying though.
“thief is worthless right now”
“thief is extremely bad”
doesn’t matter how much i actually rez ppl, +1, decap/cap etc. lol
only way to play thief in pvp atm is to disable chat
I ignore chat or I start with my usual banter:
Hi, I’m bad. Carry me plz, senpai sama overlord <3 <3 <3
Usually works. And some people actually believe it (until 30 seconds in once we make first contact and they see a bunch of dead guys near me).
70 games, that’s extreme, think i have like 15 so far.
amber for life boys!!
Played 3 more, won all 3. This build is making me giggle uncontrollably.
I do NOT solo queue with thief anymore. Why? Because thief is absolutely useless unless your team is competent as well. Without a team that can actually team fight, you can’t consistently decap/+1. You can’t carry them either. I have switched to Mantra Mesmer (core spec) to carry where needed.
kitten is thief still garbage? only class I enjoy in this game and I want to come back but THIEF SUCKS and apparently nothing has changed
i started as thief and beside decap/cap points or 1v1 for short time i look for 2v1 3v2 as in team fight i hardly contribute much
thus i reroll mesmer or necro for more team fight

pretty much this.
Thief is absolutely useless atm if compare with other classes. I switched to DH/Scrapper/Ripper/Tempest depending on team composition. These classes provide much more contribution for the team.
And of course when I see thief in our team this is a bad sign until opposite team has thief as well.

Thief is not bad. I was able to come up with a build that destroys DHers as well as 2 v 1. I’m not gonna say my build because it took me a lot of time to come up with the right utility and what not but I’m telling u, thief is not as bad as ppl are saying it is.

Your build probably isn’t even anything special.
I’ve been iterating many builds until I came up with something that works for both offense and defense: A condition daredevil.
With previous builds that relied more on stealth or direct damage and evades, holding points was rather hard. More often that not I was limited to butting in in other’s fights, and sneaking to undefended points, decap them, capture the if the enemy doesn’t come, and if more than 1 enemy came along, run away to butt in again in other’s fights and support them in another point.
With the condition daredevil, I can hold off a bit longer more than 1 enemy, and I have much less problems holding a capture point. You can just run around in circles like a headless chicken while spamming conditions, as long as the enemy can’t spam countless AoEs that cover the entire point, it won’t be decapped.
As long as one of them crazy trap-spamming dragonhunters isn’t around throwing traps that for some reason activate faster than they should, arm instantly instead after a couple of seconds like they should, and can be stacked on top of another with no downsides, the point will be defended for enough time for someone else to come by and fend off additional enemies.
This is my first time playing Ranked games in GW2. Even when solo queue, it’s usually a lot more fun than Unranked was before because so many of these games are just so close. People don’t give up as easily and I’m pushed to try much harder when comebacks are so possible. My biggest frustrations come from some of the match-making’s reactions to streaks. After several losses in a row, I’m often matched in the DH and condiburst heavy lower tiers where one team tends to face-roll another. After a win streak and usually when I’m a pip away from the next tier, I get fed to teams comprised of pro-league players with other solo queues making up the team I’m on. Despite this, the quality of games is usually much higher, the builds are more serious, and I feel like I’m learning more quickly for playing in Ranked than I would otherwise.

Thankfully I haven’t gotten a lot of this at this point except for 1 game where I DC’d right after accepting and came back in within the first 10 points. The reaction was “oh, and they’re a thief!” We lost that game but my score was in line with the rest of my team. I had a next game with one of the same people (solo q mind you) and we won handily with me at top score due to decapping, skirmishing, and finishing.
Thief can still work, but it has to work with a decent team that can actually hold points. We’re not going to carry anything. At best we magnify the strengths and weaknesses of the rest of the team.
As for the OP’s question, I’ve actually enjoyed my league play so far.
Update:
Still only playing thief in ranked arena.
Winrate dropped down to around 53%.
150 games played by now – Sapphire Tier 4
If your teammates know what to do you are still effective as a thief.
It´s just not as forgiving as most of the other classes.
A good ping is also neccesary to make it playable.
How are you all doing so far? Still getting a lot of complaints from other players?
Best regards!

So far it has been pretty good tbh. With staff i have been able to carry team fights as well as get the decaps im used to. last night I went 6/1!
Although saying that thief is sometimes really frustrating because i will get killed for free from triple dh traps somewhere random in between points and i’m left just like … why are those there :‘( and dying instantly vs a lot of other classes because I messed up one dodge but it is totally fine that I hit all of my dmg combos and they are still alive because of #passivedefence and huge health pools. Then get called a vault spammer (which usually is not the best option to do) but sometimes its like well, wtf do you want from me !? you have so much god kitten health and if I’m not in an evade always you 2 shot me! Sure ofc i use the other abilities on staff but when you need to put some safe pressure on the enemy vault is one of the best options. 2 is risky as all hell, 3 is a good cripple which you can jump cancel the rollback, 4 is a great blind but does not make your follow up safe for sure 4+5 is good because they cannot punish your non evade part of vault and you know if they never ever punish your vault, kitten it! Spam it on them all day.
If you land a throw in a fighting game and they do not tech it, you go for it again and again and again until they die. There is no column for cheap or spam there is only win or loss and with thieves the way they are right now I will do anything for the win!
Diamond, most through duo queue with friends.
If I solo queue it’s about 1 hour 30 minutes to get a queue and its against a 5 man. Duo queue has been fairly fun though just messing around with friends and enjoying the AIDS people play.
My experience with thief has been perfectly fine. People don’t rage – they just let me do my job.
My experience with thief has been perfectly fine. People don’t rage – they just let me do my job.
Basically this.
My problem with thief in soloq is that people don’t really know how to play with a thief. They expect you to 2v2 against scrappers or bunker mesmers, drop instantly in their outnumbered fights, or prefer to fight on points that are not ours rather than fight for the points I decap.
In a team, you can still be rather effective, depending on what’s against you.
I do fine provided I don’t have people “Swap please, don’t throw, PLEASE NOT A THIEF”. Thats like 1 in 5 games. =D My yolokill build works surprisingly well against non-DH. Still call bs on that Maw trap.
I’ve been pvping in ranked primarily as a Daredevil and am on the last tier of Sapphire, I enjoy it, but man I tell you what it’s definitely a wildcard each match. It really depends on the team, if the team is good I excel, but if the team is not rotating well, losing team fights and/or are not swapping to called targets it can easily snowball in the enemies favor.
I was using staff, but then recently switched back to dagger/pistol with emphasis on Pulmonary Impact, I think it’s a good adjustment and the mobility from Dash makes me feel like The Flash. Pistol 4, Steal stun and the Daredevil Elite + Pulmonary Impact makes for an excellent rush-down style of play – if a Tempest does not have stability on overload you can bring them down very quickly, Druids are also a bit easier to handle as well especially where their auto attack has a cast time they are still very strong though, Necromancers/Reapers do not do too well against this build either because they’re in the same boat as Druids with cast times on almost everything. I highly recommend this build….
I have gotten so much hate ever since the start of league – EEVVERRYYOONNEEE. People often tell me to swap, yell at me, call me names, taunt me, and on the other side of the spectrum I’ve been told I’m really good and am an awesome thief. I’ve gotten to the point where I just disrespect everyone that says something like that to me – that’s something I need to fix and I’ve seen that irritability leak out irl too. NOTHING big, just irritable is all.
This is my build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vZAQNAoaVn0MBFOhdmCmOBkmiFaCzLMkGKDzZwPYJULAMhiAA-TpBFABIt/g4lBI4IA02JAYhDBAAPAAA
I will say that I have been playing my Scrapper more and it is so much EASIER to play than Daredevil. If you take the same reflexes you would use on a Daredevil and put that onto a Scrapper you can see huge results especially in team fights and I think it is overall less stressful and more forgiving. If you mess up on a Scrapper it’s ok, if you mess up on a Daredevil you loss a match.
I dunno you, but EU is utterly filled with DH braindeads to the point where there’s at least 2/3 DH per team at anytime now.
So, yea, it’s a really, really bad time to be thief main since there’s litteraly nothing you can do against that 0 neurone kitten of a spec unless you build especially to counter those kittens and become useless anywhere else.
FYI i’m running a S/D variation which gives pretty good results against most fotm specs, even those broken viper revs. But what’s the point since where i stand, it’s like 1 viper rev for 10 DH zombies.
(edited by muscarine.5136)
My experience isn’t good at all. Even if winning (I guess the rate is at about 53% to 56%) I don’t feel like having contributed much (my score as thief is low pretty much all the time since HoT launched – I know it’s not about personal score and I don’t bother finishing a cap if someone is there already – but it feels bad if other classes just easily get double the score).
Druid, Scrapper or DH are sooo much easier and feel like they contribute a lot more to a match overall.
What bothers me most is all the AE-CC, stuns and dazes flying all over the place. I die in dazelock way too often. Staff (or thief in general) would need stability more than anything else in my opinion. (As a druid I am able to AE daze for 4 sec every 10 seconds or so…. that’s just ridiculous!)
Other than that I find thief hard if it doesn’t have a good team that supports the “thief kind of gameplay”. (going for decaps) Deffing points just doesn’t make much sense as a thief. Long group fights at mid too. Decaping is nice, but then if there is a DH sitting on a point (which happenes to me 2 of 3 times), what are you going to do?
Some fights are engaging and fun, but overall my experience is frustrating.
I didn’t get much hate as of yet though. Just once, when I tested a build in a ranked match – but hey, that was my fault.
my experience in PvP tends to be avoiding enemies and praying to grenth that they don’t defend/contest objectives, because I can’t fight that.
Funny thing is: The better (or is it because of the higher division?) I get, the more people hate. I guess it’s because everybody thinks holding mid and close is the only way to win (“meta”), so the classical thief-“decapping”-role is not wanted.
I found a nice D/D build that works fine for me though. It’s very squishy, high risk/high reward and almost classical backstab – but lots of fun and very, very fast in decapping points thanks to Dash and shortbow.
I’d really, really like to make staff work for me but it still feels lacking or I kind of can’t find my purpose with it.

General feeling for me: a lawwwt of hate for the thief (in EU).
I even got report because I didnt want to reroll -__-
I do think thief needs solid team mates for fights otherwise, like some of us said, the game goes snowball and you probly gonna lose.
Spec / sets wise, thief is still low tier compare to most of classes. DD lacks of cleanse, and some traits are extremely lackluster. S/D and SB’s AA recovery frames not being cancellable by sets skills, make the weapons feel unreactive /slow (Still my favourite sets for thief). Staff is interesting to cleave tho.
I don’t feel contributing as much as a scrapper can.. Also some classes seem to be so tanky, it depresses me to deal such low DMG as a zerk /marau (I saw some cripslash criting for 600..).
To sum up my thoughts, playing thief is a real struggle every game atm…
Edit: last night i’ve been trash talked every single game because I was playing thief.
Worst community I ever experienced so far…

This are my observations as a thief main in pvp:
-I have tried to do couple of games as revenant in pvp but its just not my thing (got 5 pips in amber then switched back tot hief)
-Usually 1 in 5 games people start to whine at the beginning of the match (the usual stuff: please reroll, gg you win – we have a thief). I usually ignore people like these, if they get really annoying i block them
-If my team knows how to play with a thief we normally roll over the opposing team
-Sometimes after the match i’ll get whispers that i played really good (that is like 1 in 15 matches, nothing to brag about but it always makes me happy)
-Many times what happens is, my team wipes on first mid fight, and people blame me for this. This usually happens when enemies have DH or two.
-Playing with shadow trap at the moment and all i can say is wow, this thing is great. The mobility to jump across the map is insane and if i use it correctly, i’m the one that carries the whole game.
In conclusion: Thief is more than viable in this meta, you just have to make it work, just look at caed for instance.
My stats are: I currently have 7 pips in sapphire, i got them all with thief (apart from 5 in amber that i got with revenant). All of my games but 5 were solo, these 5 were with a friend of mine, he was on engi and we won all of them. He was emerald at that moment (and so was i) so there was no skatchy play involved.
Revenant has a bit of a learning curve but it’s rewarding when you find a proper rotation and take advantage of combo fields, I personally find druid more useful however due to its healing and CC. Both classes are great for dueling, though revenant has some trouble against necros whereas druid handles them almost trivially with the celestial avatar cleanse, interrupt heal, and in regular form longbow kiting. I’ve defended points against dragonhunters on both classes. Winning a duel doesn’t necessarily mean we’re better however since we can just have abilities that hardcounter theirs (boonstrip and conditions and unrelenting assault dodgeframes in traps against low HP dragonhunters for example)
“This usually happens when enemies have DH or two.”
Daredevil sounds like it counters DH hard with its extra dodge, instant dodges, cripple and root cleanse, fast attacks, and some boon stripping if running sword/dagger. Maybe practice is different.
“Usually 1 in 5 games people start to whine at the beginning of the match (the usual stuff: please reroll, gg you win – we have a thief). I usually ignore people like these, if they get really annoying i block them”
I’ve won games where we had two warriors. Tactics and skill matter more whereas class mechanics come into play more at the higher levels. Still, it’s better to just roll an objectively better class to maximize your team’s potential. Maybe Anet thought thieves and warriors shone for too long and decided to make them weak this time around?

Finally reached Ruby.
Took alltogether 204 games.
Down to 51,47% winrate.
I guess i will hit a brickwall now with solo q.
The hate from copypasta metabattle heroes is real.
Sure thief is not in the best state at the moment but still playable.
Switched over to P/P and SB. Works surprisingly well.
Dash and SB will let you fly over the map and because you are ranged you don´t have to eat all the cleave dmg flying around.
Maybe my opponents are just bad. I don´t know.
Anyway it was an interesting experience.
Wish you all good luck!
Best regards!

I like puppies ^_^
I only play thief in pvp because nothing else is fun for me. It could be worse though. I could be a warrior main.
Hit legend last night. Mostly duo queue until diamond, then did a 4 queue with friends for ~30 games. Staff/SB (build in stream info) with some variations of traits. Only got a comment once on a loss about thief and it was from someone on a 5q vs my duo.
Overall it’s possible to duo until legend, but I wouldn’t suggest solo queue. The queue times are too long and you tend to have less control over the outcome of the match compared to playing with a friend. You may run into premades but you can always win if people know what to do. Don’t blame losses on other players, whether or not it’s their fault. There’s always something you can do better in a match – find it and fix it. The only way you’ll improve is if you accept that instead of pushing blame to other people – even if they throw a match.

On paper, daredevil soudns very good agaisnt what a DH does.
You can activate and then dodge the traps, get in on them when they use longbow and stuff.
In practice, its really hard unless it’s a clean 1v1 and you have lots of open space. Traps are big, and they cover tight areas very well ( side nodes ). Even if you dodge away from the Ring of blades trap or the Longbow 5, they still restrict your mobility a lot because you have to go around them since you have zero stability.
Runes of the Trapper gives them a split seconds to move around into a more favorable spot everytime they drop a trap. You need to dodge the trap, but if you dodge in the wrong direction while they’re in stealth, they gain quite a lot of range on you.
Those few things makes it just pretty hard to avoid the Trueshots that come every 4seconds. And if you ever get hit by one trueshot, it’s over, you’re dead.
I have success in clean 1v1’s against dragonhunter with my druid and revenant but daredevil lacks the defense to cope and need to blow dodges avoiding trueshot and traps. The hard part wouldn’t be dodging them assuming nothing obstructs their telegraph but managing energy after those initial dodges. Revenant has condition damage, boon strip, and unrelenting assault being a free dodge so rev counters hard while druid has signet of stones to eat traps, LoS the downed guardian when low on health waiting for the heal to go off CD while the pet keeps him from getting up, then finishing him off. Thief simply lacks those tools.

Here is the build i am currently using. I always try to adapt to the meta.
Will see what i face in ruby division.
The build Caed is running works well too if you have experienced teammates.
Grats on legendary division btw! 61% winrate. Thats impressive.
I just experienced that a lot of people run far and fight the druid for 10 minutes on their capped point or struggle at home with attackers. So i aimed for highest mobility to assist and turn the fights in our favor.
With a coordinated team you can probably reduce the amount of condi cleanse and go for the on interrupt traits instead.
Best regards!

Not sure where you got that win percentage from. Unless it was a typo maybe.
Hi, I’m Caed and I play Thief… Just a little.
From the GW2 Leaderboards:
It doesnt include lifrtime stats because of the reset.

I thought the Leaderboards were old, might be mistaken though.
Edit: Yea, the leaderboards weren’t reset with the league divisions – those are fairly inaccurate of people’s performance since the patch. Also thank you (for the congrats) ^^

He should be higher than that, but that’s still an awesome win record. I’m stuck between 77%-81% :( Since I’ll need a positive win record to climb out of emerald it’ll only get worse from here on out. Even if I made it to ruby with a premade we’d be farm fodder for the elites, at least until more people made legendary and diamond and they start facing each other instead.
thief+shatt mes still favourite duoq by far, also the best winrate with it for all the duoq’s i’ve done
