How long can a Thief stealth for continuously?

In WvW I saw a thief stand his ground verse a group of 20 people , for 5 mins. We had a hard time even finding him.

I want to create such a build and learn how this is done.

Dagger/Pistol, X/30/30/X/X and repeatedly throw down Black Powder and heartseeker through it a bunch of times.

Then, have a little bread with that cheese.

Did that thief kill anyone? Were they upleveled? These are the questions you should be asking. Trust me, you don’t want to go down that cheese bricked road, its has a bad smell on it that has caused rage for months.

And a thief can stealth for as long as they want if they spec for it, they just won’t kill you IN stealth. If you had 20 people incapable of stunning or immobilizing when they appeared , I’m afraid your allies were actually skritt. Shocking though, since they have a hive mind.

And what did said thief accomplish?
How was the thief compensated for what he did?
What happened to the thief after?
What happened to the 20 people after?
What did it change prior to 5 minutes of him engaging you guys?
What was the overall result of his encounter?
What did you and the 19 others take out of this fight?

(And yeah… as ninja mentioned… did you CC him? did 5-10 warriors and 3-7 gaurdians jump on him with a hammer while the others blasted the ground with AoE?)

Really against larger groups, the most a stealth thief can do is harass people with things like caltrops+choking gas since they don’t break stealth. Although you’d be hardpressed to find a group of 2-3 people that could actually die to that and even then…

Thieves are probably the only class that can reliably escape from a gang attack, which is at least one thing they have going for them. Its also not uncommon for these thieves to harass waypoints by making them contested then disappearing. I’ve always thought that commanders that use this to their advantage could gain a huge field advantage by forcing enemies to run very far to support their teammates.

That being said, thieves can’t (usually) kill you from stealth and if they’re a perma stealth build, they probably won’t be killing you if you are at least with one other person. Once a good thief tests your hp pool, they’ll know exactly who to go for. They could down the tougher guy so that when the squishy one comes to rez he’s easy prey, or do it the other way around so the big guy has to waste a lot of time constantly rezzing.

I have actually witnessed gang of skrit killing a dolly at west entrance to crossroads camp.

5 people chasing 1 thief. niether of which is doing dmg or any threat. nothing has chagned other than a few players with bad priorities getting angry.

if a thief goes for stealth build…they obviously cant kill or be productive. whyd o people care.

see the thing is yes you can putall those stealth skills together but they do nothign if u do. if u nerf them bc u are awnry and jealous then the actual builds that use them get hurt bad.

Sounds like that thief was a non-attacking troll build. I’ve had a few good run-ins with them, usually with me and my friend on thief. It turns into an invisible battle of thieves. CIA, eat your heart out, we be ninja fighting.

Can someone say how that happened?

You have too much defense and not enough offense in your build it sounds like. Same may be true for the Guardian. Damage rules this game because there is no holy trinity. Without video to tell you two what you did wrong and the thief did right I can’t really speculate further.

Sounds like the thief completely outplayed you. Seriously, the only issues I’m having with other Thieves is them resetting the fight or fleeing.

I main a thief so my opinion might be slightly “biased” but to be honest, no thief has ever killed me on my Guardian.

Depends, when specced for it with the right traits and utilities (almost) indefinitely. But you can’t kill anything while maintaining stealth as doing damage invokes a debuff that prevents stealth for a few seconds.
They could use the offhand dagger skill Cloak & Dagger to re-enter stealth just when it wears off and it deals reasonably good damage, but it shouldn’t be enough to kill anyone, least of all anyone part of a 20 man group.

20 man should be able to keep some AoE up over a respectable area and either hurt him badly or force his positioning. They also should have enough CC, blinds, protection, regen and healing to keep him from killing anyone. Moreover, if they didn’t kill him they should simply have ignored him and proceed to their objective.

I want to create such a build and learn how this is done.

WORKS EVERY SINGLE TIME

they keep running chasing nobody (none even would think about turning around and look back lol), while you run completely somewhere else lol

they keep running chasing nobody (none even would think about turning around and look back lol), while you run completely somewhere else lol

haha I do that with Infiltrator’s strike and then I just keep running while they chase me then Infiltrator’s return XD

I don’t get it… you mean you saw a thief 1v20 and killed 2 warriors? the group of 20 can literally stand there and use absolutely no skills, wait until the thief downs someone… res the person that was downed…. then proceed to once again stare blankly at their screens contemplating life and the universe. :P

Actually, it’s 100% impossible to maintain permanent stealth with just D/P + Infusion of Shadow post 10th Dec patch. Seriously, you of all people should be against spreading misinformation.

It’s still possible with careful rotation of utilities you wouldn’t have had to use prior to the nerf. This was established fairly quickly after the patch.

It’s still possible with careful rotation of utilities you wouldn’t have had to use prior to the nerf. This was established fairly quickly after the patch.

Yes, but that’s not what you said in your post, which is why I said “only”.

All this means is that he is a better player than you, and not because he is good, the other reason.

I’m not trying to insult you but you take by far the most OP character in the game and complain about getting killed by a perma stealth thief?

If you and the other guy couldn’t burst the thief down in that time period, you have too much survivability without enough power/precision/crit damage. If you’re part of a team and your only job is to control, you need to make sure your teammates are ready to burst in that timeframe.

Alone, but trolls seek ways to keep on the troll road. Signet of Infiltration, and quick recovery and even patience if they really want to just troll. Bottom line they can still maintain perma stealth but they have to invest more into it than before, and overall its not all that effective against people who have experience with these clowns who abuse it.

Well let me shed some light here, there is a little miscommunication in my post I guess.
The incident I was in was not at the same time as the guy talking about the large group.
My incident was I jumped in a fight when a guardian was fighting a thief, I hit him with F1 and dazed him, I then hit him with a full skill set, each hit counting for from 2k to 3k + each hit. Now I hit the thief with at least 12k+ of damage, the guardian was also hitting him at the same time. Now I cant say what he was hitting him for, but hey if he is getting at least 1.5k a hit we should have killed him with no problems at all. after all I had him dazed for at least three secs while I laid the hammer to him, everything we hit him with took around 25% of his life, even though he was dazed that’s all we took.
Now he gets his bearings back and kills both of us while we are still pounding on him, and Keep in mind I am hitting with a hammer for at least 2.8k a hit. I am just not understanding how this can be, and there is no one thing you can say on here that will make me believe that a build can do that. I have one of each of these characters and me and my friends have spent countless hours researching each one and I tell ya, things I see in this game makes no since what so ever. I mean really a thief that can use the elite venom skill freeze you and hit you one time and take 25k to 28k in one hit come guys. If you can show me a build that will do that I will be in pressed completely.
My thief power build one hit back stab, highest hit little over 9k, that being said, minimum of three hits to kill and it has to be three or more perfect back stab hits..
Who can do that.

I see thieves running around all the time, one hitting like it was nothing, now I understand single out one guy stay on him till he is dead, but while you are doing this there are one to five others guys there and your going evade everything everyone throws your way, that is not realistic.

Everything y’all talk about is in a perfect world.
No such thing in this game as perfect every time.
Hell I don’t think a person can get a perfect back stab every time.

No we don’t one hit people. These sorts of clamis make rational discussion impossible.

Thieves can potentially one hit people by utility stealthing and backstabbing – you could one hit glass cloth wearers I suppose, but that is a risk you take and only if the thief is also very glassy or has a time gated burst package which is really no fun to play – kill on guy every 60 seconds if he is alone?

Wow, just wow, where to start:

1) Thief most likely had you blinded for a few attacks
2) Most likely broke stun and/or evaded and healed up
3) Might have been 2 thieves (alot of player will have 2 same looking characters and trade off stealth to make it look like one, thisis very fun btw)
3) You wasnt hitting for what you are claiming to hit for
4) Did the other guy actually hit? or was he blinded (thief can blind alot)
5) Even when Immob, SB 3, d/d 3 and s/p 3 can all give a 1-2 sec evade, he could have been evading most the attacks
6) He did not 1 hit kill you, If a thief ever 1 hit kills, Post a Screen shot, I wana see your screen shot.

Hell, I’d be happy with even 2 – 3 hit kills. Every time I try to backstab someone I get around 7k with decent survivability. With health pools and evades and such, I can’t get 3 backstabs off in the window it takes someone to hit 6, pop a stun break, then hit 6, or block.

AAAAnd the question is: Why perma stealth?! Apart from running around the world invisible there is just no point in it.

Well, it can keep 15-20 people busy for 5+ minutes, and in that time they’re not doing anything constructive to help their team. They might as well not even be on the field.

It may be a troll build but an argument can be made for it’s merit in waylaying the enemy.
