How many times can a thief stealth?
Alatum Interitum
I’m betting sword dagger. Dagger he can stealth off of C&D when he has enough initiave for it and sword attack 1 would just keep doing damage. He could easily cloak every 4 – 10 seconds, ever 3 seconds really if he just waits on the cloak debuff to go away. And they can be tanky as well and just stay in and regen from attacking as well as from stealth. Would be a long fight with no big burst but a good time I’m sure.
If he had a dagger in his offhand he can stealth anytime, so long as he has 6 initiative and is able to hit something (number 5 ability). That’s about half of his available initiative (depending on traits). As for dodging, if he is traited for it, he could have any of the following;
-Dodging returns some of the endurance used. (15 points in Acrobatics) – This lets us dodge 3 times in a row before completely out of Endurance
-Gain vigor upon healing. (10 points in Acrobatics)
-Stealing grants you and all nearby allies vigor for 15 seconds. Up to two boons are also ripped from your target and granted to nearby allies. (20 points in Trickery)
-Plus any Sigil/Rune that grants Vigor on doing stuff
Most commonly P/D thieves use a build that takes some of the above, but any x/D thief can pull this off with varying degrees of success. When you learn when do dodge his Cloak and Dagger, you will have no more issues with this kind of play (there is an animation to look for). Note: he can start this cast then click steal (class ability) and shadowstep right next to you in time to hit you with CnD, so be on the look out from about 900 range if you see the thief coming near you.
Most likely cloak and dagger. Guardans are best suited to screw this up. You just need to dodge, block, immune their melee attack and they can’t stealth. Do it twice in a row and they likely have no init and you can beat for a bit before getting ready to dodge/immune/block the melee attack again.
If they were constantly firing off blind fields and stealth then they are d/p and it’s much harder to stop them from stealthing fi they are speced for it. On the other hand they will probably never kill you. So in sPvP that means you win since you hold the point and every time they stealth, they are loosing the point.
Finally someone is asking questions instead complaining. Thank you!
as long as the thief doesn’t have the revealed debuff (lasts 3 seconds) and has stealth abilites off cooldown or has enough initiative to use the stealth abilities, he can stealth. A thief can build to be able to stealth every 3 seconds, or even to stay in stealth indefinitely. Of course this comes at the cost of damage and other things, but it can be done.
Also, speaking of thief vs guardian, I once fought a guardian for an entire sPvP round as a defensively built thief. It was kind of amusing. (we weren’t on a point)
Ah yes, I forgot to mention which weapons he was using. It was indeed P/D. He also seemed to dodge a whole lot, so the traits mentioned might be the ones he used. It just caught me off guard as I’ve never seen anything like it. Thanks for the help, everyone.
I’ll be more suited for the next thief trying this.

If he’s using P/D and using lots of stealth, then he is a Condition Damage spec. His “out of stealth” attack fires the pistol several times and stacks a lot of bleeds. The rest of his weapon skills don’t do Condition damage besides Pistol1 and the out of stealth Pistol1 attacks, so he will probably be using all of his Initiative to stealth, or perhaps to help him kite (P/D 3 teleports away, D4 is a cripple).
After reading the OP I had to check the date to make sure it wasn’t myself you were fighting. I’m a defensive D/P thief though, relying less on invisibility and relying more on Weakness/Blind/Regeneration to reduce incoming damage.
Cloak and Dagger; 6 initiative for 3 seconds of stealth – base stealth = 2
* Infiltrator’s Signer; +1 initiative every 6s = 1 extra CnD every minute
* Roll for Initiative; +6 initiative every 60s = 1 extra CnD every minute
Blinding Powder; Stealth for 3 seconds every 40s
Shadow Refuge; Stealth for 3 seconds per tick every 60s; ticks = 4
* Master of deception makes Blinding Power 32s and SR 48s cooldown
Smoke Screen; with a leap finisher (Heartseeker) = 3 seconds of stealth per leap
* Black Powder; same as Smoke Screen
Hidden Thief; Steal Grants stealth for 2 seconds
Last Refuge; Use blinding Powder (3s of stealth) at 25% health
I am anti-censorship, for it doesn’t make sense to pander to a minority.
There is also a trait for gaining 2 initiative every time you enter stealth (you don’t even have to use invis yourself, when using my Mesmer a Thief guildie always says he loves it when I turn him invis as it gives him all the stealth benefits).
Another trait that gives invisibility on use of Steal, which has a base cool down of 45 seconds I believe, which can be reduced to 30 something seconds when taking the bottom line of traits.
If you can dodge his CnD, or even block is with aegis, eventually, his options are going to run out. Another really useful tool is the spin pull, that works great.
Another thing, make sure you use tab targetting when fighting thieves
good luck!!
This was a case of the thief totally out playing you, but being unable to kill your class.
I have a build for guardians….it melts them, but its not feasible for WvW unfortuantely
With Cloak and Dagger, using Dual Daggers and the 1 and 5 weapon skills exclusively, coupled with {V} Infusion of Shadow (Shadow Arts, refunds 2 initiative when you stealth, making Cloak and Dagger essentially only cost 4 initiative) means that a thief on paper will have an infinite number of stealths, assuming you can hit every time with Dagger 5 (harder than it sounds when you’re chasing someone down). I’ve used this technique exclusively in dungeons to keep bosses off me and to keep behind them for crit backstabs, since by the time the stealth reveal debuff wears off, you will be back to full initiative.
Again, it does assume you have perfect aim, but I’ve faced thieves with aim that good. Or close enough that it doesn’t matter.
Dayum, all these builds have made me interested in rolling a thief. A continous stealth build sounds very awesome to try out, even if the damage might be lacking. Very intriguing ninja build. Though, I still like being able to take it up close and personal as a guardian.

Yep, especially on WvWvW where the culling bug enables better stealth without losing dps.
as long as the thief doesn’t have the revealed debuff (lasts 3 seconds) and has stealth abilites off cooldown or has enough initiative to use the stealth abilities, he can stealth.
Revealed debuff doesn’t do anything because of the culling issue. He’ll remain invisible on your screen while that’s up anyways, then he can hit you with a cloak and dagger when it runs out and he’s invisible again.
That debuff doesn’t do a single thing at the moment because of the culling. In fact, they should increase it by double to compensate for culling.

This will only happen when there is a lot of players near you.

This is incorrect info. It’s proven this happens when there are no other players around during down time on a server.
We have a cross server guild where we do 1v1’s against each other when our servers are matched up. We meet out in the middle of nowhere far away from anyone (and even when the server is rather empty). The culling issue does not change. The thief still gets 2-3 seconds of invisibility after it wears off.
We did extensive testing on this issue. The number of players doesn’t matter.

This is inaccurate as it’s been disproven several time.

the guy above me and my personal experience is all i need for proof. I don’t owe you anything more.
all you need to do is look and see what his mainhand is doing.
look at the combat log. if it’s backstab, its dagger main hand.
if its unload, it’s pistol mainhand.
if you’re getting dazed a lot, its sword mainhand.
without a doubt, he was using dagger offhand.

exactly. you dont have any proof to back up any of your claims. please go troll another class forum

I don’t really care if you consider me creditable. Anet does the balancing and if we can deliver enough complaints with screenshots, they will act. That’s all I need.
nice personal attack, mechanix. i guess if you have no legitimate arguments that’s what happens. seriously look at the culling issue objectively.
A thief can stay in stealth permanently through easy tricks.
Just typed Thief Perma Stealth GW2 and you can see how they do it.
