How to deal w/ Guardian block spam?
See topic. Getting sick of fighting guardians with their block up constantly. I fought one today and I swear I was just swinging on him for 10-15 seconds non-stop w/ my auto-attack while he just stood there basically ignoring me.
So how do we deal w/ them?
People talk about stealth like its overpowered but it is nothing compared to this nonsense.
Play a guardian and you’ll know which skills cause a block, for how long, and what their cooldowns are. Then just time your bursts accordingly.
If thieves are meant to be burst, then guardians are supposed to be the opposite. Working as intended.
Is it normal to be swinging on someone for very long periods of time and seeing “block, block, block” constantly? I mean for long periods of time? As in several iterations of the dagger auto-attack?
Nothing can melee a guardian profitably. Either spike him or chain daze with sword/stolen item.
If they are built defensively, you will just have a hard time of it and that is it. any main hand dagger build makes it obvious when big burst is about to go down, so they can block it reliably with the right weapons or utilities. any dazes or stuns you can get through with will open them up though, even more so if their boons are running out of duration when they get through. try faking them out by doing things like stealth stacking or a single HS to try and make them blow CDs to stop burst they think is coming but is actually delayed or just a feint.

Burn him down with short bow auto. Throw in some cluster bombs, some poison…
Now the hard part. After a certain percentage its now time for the split second burst attempt. It’s either all or nothing if its mitigated stop. Your done. Pack the bags and go home. If not well then +1 to the highlight reel.
^If your a burst thief (landing cluster bombs is crucial but make sure to not do this when retal is up)

It’s very odd if he can keep doing that. The longest block is 2 seconds from the Shelter heal. Outside of that, every individual hit should remove aegis.
If the guardian is running with a mace+focus, and using all his cooldowns (F3, Retreat.etc) then it’s possible, but there is no reason to to so, and the high rate of dagger attacks should remove the blocks extremely fast.

each block causes heavy burning, that’s why

Yeah so unfair… you wasn’t able to kill that guy despite you pressed a key by 15 seconds……… nosense man, nosense…
Well at least you can just run away… or maybe you can invest some time playing other class besides your thief,
L2p sounds familiar?
Well to be honest, getting hammered on for 10-15 seconds really should damage any class, shouldn’t it? Ignoring the skill-level of such an assault, defenses do need limits.
Now whether this was exaggerated or not is another issue, haha.

There is no other class in the game that can kill someone without ever landing an attack. That’s what’s wrong with guardian atm. It’s cool that they are uber tanky, it’s not cool when their tank=dps. Btw you are right on 1 thing for sure which is a hard lesson to learn, guardian is the #1 counter to thief atm. Thief low hp pool can hardly deal with all the burns on block and all the retaliation. Even if the thief could, it’s VERY hard to get a solid burst through all those aiges and protection. Even if the thief does, it’s very unlikely it will down the guard so most likely the guard will just heal back up and out-live the thief. It’s the sad/true story of a fight between thieves and guards. Basically all you can do is ignore the guy and run away.

bhagwad gave a very good advice which is the same I try to tell thief haters: Play a Guardian.
My first alternate character is a Guardian and I use a Mace+Focus build with a huge ton on blocks (that I can think right now, Mace counter, Focus 3 blocks exploding shield, trait that gives aegis at 50% health, the passive aegis that will be there at least on my first fight, the active use of my aegis and the shout retreat, another one that I don’t bring is heal that heals for less than other skills but blocks everything for 2 seconds but I usually take the signet because I don’t feel I need that one and the signet heals a lot). That build allows me to go Berserk equipment and still be very durable thanks to all the blocks and regeneration (oh, and blind, I got a blind on a focus skill and blind when I use justice so that’s like another 2 blocks).
But that’s not as OP as it looks like. As a very experienced Thief, I’ve learned to predict Stealth to the point sometimes I play to stand still, wait for when I think the backstab will come and dodge and I usually dodge it (and I’ve never played backstab builds, only stealth builds and still can predict them, imagine someone with experience as a backstaber). I’m not as experienced as a guardian, but it helps a lot against them too to play as them (aswell as with any other profession but I only got 5 character slots and all of them are full so I can’t try the other 3 proffs that’s why I also lurk other profession forums too, you can learn a lot reading their guides and threads). My personal advice against them is using condition damage as they usually have tons of ways to resist your high damage attacks, but they got our same lower tier HP pool and conditions get them quickly. P/D works great for me against them as it hits a lot of times with Sneak Attack, avoiding many blocks and inserting multiple bleeds on them.

I kill guardians all the time.
I kill guardians all the time.
I kill bad guardians all the time.
The good ones are too hard to crack open, its a waste of time. He probably will just dance around block, invul, heal, keep you busy until his backup team arrives.
If you want to troll him back, grab sword/dagger.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.

A good thief or necro can kill w/o effort a good guardian.

It’s really not that big of a deal. You just need to fight guard differently than a ranger. That’s the same as needing to fight an ele different than a mesmer. Adapt your style and you will be fine.

There is a patch coming up that is changing this skill not sure how much of this will still be valid, but as for today you can hit Guardians my friend.
