I Wanted to Play a Thief not an Assassin
- I wanted to sabotage an enemy trebuchet so it rains healing artillery on my team the next time it’s used.
This is a great idea!
- I wanted to carefully time the use of my steal ability so I could disarm warriors in the middle of combat and finish them off with their own weapons.
Will be great if steal, stole weapon for 1 max 2 secs or for 1 max 2 skills and in meantime foe can’t use theri weapon, not a great damage but a trick for a thief!
- I wanted to have the lowest damage in the game and be forced to rely on trickery to win fights rather than just maximizing my damage output.
Since in this game evasion is a player skill and not a class skill, will be fine if scout class (thief and ranger) can dodge 3 times in a row without traits. Evasion is a principal defensive skill that scout use in combat but here a heavy warrior with hammer, a squishy thief and a light elementalist can dodge in the same mode. (thief can dodge 3 time but only with 15 point in Acrobatics)
Guardian here, I noticed you didn’t mention us in your OP. Then I realized we have no issues taking you down.
^_^
At first I wanted to comment some points of yours, but then I realized how pointless these complains are. Arena Net didn’t make this game exclusively for you. I like its design, as many other players do. But if you don’t – leave it and pick some other game. However, I suggest you to adapt istead, and explore it deeper, because PvP in GW2 is awesome. You don’t have to maximize damage to be any useful. Of course, it’s the easiest way to play a thief, but it isn’t the only option.
Yeah, I dare to say it – “instagib backstab spec” is easy and plain way to play a thief.
Invent your own effective playstyle, maybe based around traps and tricks, and I guarantee you tons of satisfaction.
Well, if you use Smoke Screen and Cluster Bomb, you can make Area Stealth, giving you and your friend Stealth similar to a smoke bomb.
Other than that, the rest of the points are kind of imaginary to be honest. There are lots of different ways to play the thief. I use lots of bleeds then go stealth with Blinding Powder while their health is draining extremely fast. Then I jump back into the fight, bleed, and shadowstep away. If they don’t have a condition removal, they’re dead.
Doing this in WvW masses of people is so fun. I can distract around 6 or so people for a minute, even more if I manage to kill one person.
Write a book, Boloth, it’s a great release for an over-active imagination. I really like the sound of your thief, but I’m sure I’ll never see him in GW2. But if you write that book I’ll read about him there. :P
That kind of thief exists more in my vision as well, I wrote a long thread about it called “A welcomed change” in this section and spvp section
I wanted to have a thief profession that didn’t use venoms at all (assassins use venom) or stealth for that matter. Which is why I don’t use them.
Let’s go play some tabletop or forum RP, then. I’m down.
When Guild Wars 2 came out I wanted to play a thief in PvP.
Sounds like you didn’t want to play a Thief in GW2 then, because you can’t do any of those things in GW2.
Those abilities you listed sounded like a lot of fun for thieves, a lot of nuisance for everyone else, including the devs.
you spend complaining about it on the forums, you’d be
done by now.”

- I wanted to turn enemies to stone with basilisk venom then use a smoke bomb to stealth my warrior friend so he can shatter them with a hammer sneak attack for an instant kill.
I do think you’re onto something with this. Not the venom combo, but the hammer sneak attack. That would be kind of cool if Thief Blinds could lay out special attacks for our allies who also stand in the Powder.

WOOOOSH.
The drive behind all these wannabe Assassin classes like WoW’s rogue, GW2’s thief etc. has been the Assassin archetype, quick, agile, stealthy and a little bit of poison just in case.
I like them all, Rogue, Thief, Assassin etc. but all of these classes have an Assassin game play at their core, as they should. Assassin = Win
