I can't take it anymore!!
Don’t take it too badly. Even in a perfectly balanced games you’ll see call for nerfs for every single class happening in the forums because you’ll always meet someone who things what you use is OP.
This is because for a lot of players, the definition of OP is : I lost against it. Just keep your head cool about it and wait for the next big patch changes first.
I’ll give you a big plus for this post. Totally sick of this endless nerf-whine cascade. As an old gamer I can surely say that some people just forgot what it means to master a class. Or it’s just a recent mmo trends to give an endless power ti player in easy ways via gear or whatever.

I admit it is getting rather tiresome.
Every time you visit either the Thief, sPvP or WvW Forums half of the new threads are about how OP Backstab is and why it should be nerfed etc.
The thing is, very few of those posters ever really bother to understand the intricacies of the Backstab combo and the fact that they are dying not to a single ability, but rather a multitude of attacks that all hit them in quick succession.
Anyway, all of this QQ will be over in a few days when the new patch hits. ANet has already announced that Thief damage is under review. The question is not if we’re going to be nerfed, but rather how and what.
I hope ANet really tackles the root of the problem rather than simply nerfing the damage.
You have +1 from me too. Nice post. Its all total true. Its enough of nerfing thief. Thief becoming useless and these little girls cry more and more.
It’s the side effect of playing the stealth class. It doesn’t matter where they reside in the power curve or what game it is, they will be incessantly QQ’d about by the masses.
Indeed but GL getting all crybabies into understanding this. ;p
It’s the side effect of playing the stealth class. It doesn’t matter where they reside in the power curve or what game it is, they will be incessantly QQ’d about by the masses.
exactly. it’s been this way on every game i’ve every played. stealth classes could have absolutely nothing to offer besides stealth, and would still take the brunt of the complaints. simply because stealth classes don’t march up to someone and announce “I’MO FIGHT YOU NOW. READY, SET, GO!”. and really, i understand why. people fear what they can’t see, and fear leads to panic, and panic to frustration. they figure that since they’re flawless in their approach, at least in their own minds, that something must be wrong about the other guy. the combination of the two results in them believing that anyone who can kill them can only do so due because something about them is overpowered. so they start a complaint thread on the forums. then others begin adding in their own anecdotal evidence, and things snowball from there. more threads are created, more whining spews forth, and then the insults begin. they claim that the people playing the stealth class have absolutely no skill worth mentioning and are using their overpowered abilities as a crutch. which leads to further snowballing.
others, on the other hands, adapt their tactics. not necessarily their build or their gear, but their tactics, and end up able to handle the stealth class with little or no problems. they, however, don’t join into the whining threads, because it just plain doesn’t concern them. so the only ones left in there are the people familiar with the issue at hand to defend it, and all of the people who have picked up their torches and pitchforks to join the angry mob attacking it.
simply because they need an excuse.
its not just the “little girls” its “them” catering to the “little girls”. That is the problem.

To be honest, there’s practically no point to using the active effect of the assassin’s signit now.
If you’ve got a power of say, 1800, the +90 passive is an extra 5% damage. The difference between active, and passive is not nearly enough to justify the 40-ish seconds of downtime, and the skill goes from gimmicky to rather pointless.

Then there was little reason to use it before too isn’t it? Well there was one : burst > not burst, especially when you expect non fighting downtime right after to let the signet recharge. And another reason : using a signet gives me 5 stacks of might and 2 initiative.
Also isn’t power added to weapon damage to get your “attack”? On a power oriented build you should be at around 3k attack on average. 90 power is 3% of that only.
You’re getting nerfed. Learn how to get over it.
and when the whining nerf train starts pointing in your direction, remember these words. because it has very little to do with balance. it has to do with pride. person A loses to person B, so person A assumes that person B is OP(or in some instances, assumes they’re cheating). so person A begins a campaign against whatever person B used to kill them, because person A believes that the only way they could ever lose is if the other person has an advantage over them. a few people with person A’s mindset joins into the fray, and then mob mentality kicks in. facts and logic get tossed out the window at that point, replaced by “rabble rabble rabble”.
when one MMO caters to these whiners, it sets the expectation that every MMO must follow suit.
and, here’s an interesting question i’d like to pose. if thieves are so OP and require absolutely no skill to play, why aren’t the multitude of bots using them?
Edelweiss is a well known unskilled troll.
You’re not going to be able to engage in any reasoned discourse with him – best strategy is just not to feed him.

I completely support the thief van nerf. Our vans are far superior to the vans of the other classes.

These posts are so full of it. You can’t just “try” any profession you haven’t played before, be level 80 in sPvP and perform well. I don’t believe it. If you really did this you probably got destroyed and frustrated because you had no clue what you were doing but still came here to say this in order to prove a point.
People who take the time to level a Thief a bit and understand the class learn how to counter it and stop complaining, like this guy:
“MrSilver.5269:
I hate to admit it, but I was here QQing for the better part of the last week or so. I then decided to roll a thief just to play around with the mechanics to better understand the class.
I only got to level 31ish so although I’m no expert, I now understand the class much better now, and went back to the drawing board to change my entire engineer spec. I was hesitant to do so because I was concerned as an engineer I would hit like a wet noodle. Yes, my damage did take a slight hit, but not as much as I thought due to a mechanic of one of the engineer’s utility skills that evens the playing field considerably. The funny thing is that the solution was sitting right in front of me, and I just didn’t see it.
In any event, the long of the short of it is that by figuring out how to counter the thief, I stumbled upon a MUCH more durable version of the engineer that I am REALLY enjoying playing.
So, I’m here to formally apologize for my QQ.
SORRY!!!!!”

Actually, I have a thief and have been playing it in PvE over the last couple of weeks. I didn’t just up and make a thief for PvP. I know how to play the class…. not as well as others. But that’s the thing, I don’t need to know the class like the back of my hand to perform well with it. I don’t understand why so many of you are reluctant to agree when the general consensus is that many thief builds are currently too strong, but you just won’t see it.
“wah wah stop the nerfs” c’mon guys, if theif gets nerfed so hard they get kicked out of the meta, learn another proffession until theif gets balanced back in again. If gw1 was anything to go by, the meta will always change, certain builds and classes will become popular and unpopular in complete cycles. It’s the nature of MMOs, they are fluid and ever changing.
Perfect balance is almost impossible to achieve, so a rotating meta will probably go on for a long time before stuff is well balanced. The game is still young, the game will not stay the same so don’t expect it to.
^this is assuming theives get nerfed hard enough to lose their competitive ability in pvp, which we don’t know yet btw. Nerfed does not equal Useless.

If you truly know how to play your thief, you should have no problems with them on your other classes unless you are being stubborn with your build/utility and only using certain things.
I go to WvW on my level 14 Mesmer and have no problems with 80 Thieves (at least with dying to them). Blink, Decoy, Focus#4, Blurred Frenzy. I have all these at level 14 and they all counter Thieves!

I’m not sure if this is a bug or not but I’ve fought thieves that have a very long stealth durations and seemingly can instantaneously stealth again afterwards. I might just be having a problem with this because my Ranger (even though I focused on pow/pre with plenty of quickness) does little damage, but spending the time to 1v1 a thief only to have him disappear, forcing me to track him with traps and fire everywhere blindly only to have him escape anyway is very frustrating.
That being said, I feel like they need a vitality boost (if they do indeed nerf stealth noticeably) because their health seems to drop the fastest of the medium armor characters.

If you can put your pet on passive to keep him away from the thief, then kite him it will stop this. Get to know the cloak and dagger animation and evade it. Ranger is known to be the weakest of all the professions but it will help to keep the pet away and kite. Also stay in areas away from mobs if it’s WvW.

I honestly hope that thieves and bunkers get nerfed into the ground. You guys had your fun with the obscene burst specs, the stealth in wvw, and other unintended or unfair advantages.
Why all the tears and the hate, OP, scared that you`re going to have to l2p now?
To be honest I dont know which ones cry more, the glass cannons that get burst down in 2 seconds or the equally bad thieves trying to defend their 1 button spam fotm spec.
Eduardo.4675 – “Do you know how your name reads when i see you in game? Farm.
Deal with it.” Nice to see all the 12year olds rolled thieves)
3 wvw kills
i see the real cry babies here ‘’ pls dont nerf thief pls dont nerf thief’’ i have a thief aswell with other 4 classes i dont play spvp i do solo and grp wvw now i tell you what
in all those 5 classes i have ( all fully geared) thief has highest burst dps + best escape mechanics , this is totally ok with an assassin class i agree with you but what i dont agree is no class should have the ability to 1 shot another class yes elementalist , engineer , ranger you can 1 shot all these classes i can hear ‘’ohhh its not 1 ability its a combo’’ well kitten that 5+f1+1 i think you all know what im talking aobut this is a 1 shot combo doesnt give any chance to your opponent here is how you feel when you are playing another class
exmp : my engineer is full tho gear ( knight ) with i think 16k hp , i saw thief coming on the right corner of my screen and it was too late already teleported on me and im dead opened up the combat log to check
Steal 5k
CaD 5k
BS 11k
as much as i like to do this to other ppl i want this game to be balanced so i can play with other classes as well
this is ofcourse not the only broken combo (skill) in the game but as far as i heard its not only thieves getting dmg nerf its the whole spike dmg gonna get reduced such as hundred blades , granade barrage and so on

Ok… you obviously didn’t read my post so I’ll go over it again for you. I said I can play thief. I never said I can play a thief well, but that’s the point. But it requires WAY more effort on my part to be as effective as the thief I’m fighting.

I don’t get what your complaint is then. The “unskilled” thief burst spec is good once a minute and is the easiest thief to kill. Have you died to one lately on your d/d Ele? Have you died to a Thief at all on your d/d Ele? You are playing one of the strongest setups in the game imo and it really should have zero issues with any thief build.
I’ll give you a big plus for this post. Totally sick of this endless nerf-whine cascade. As an old gamer I can surely say that some people just forgot what it means to master a class. Or it’s just a recent mmo trends to give an endless power ti player in easy ways via gear or whatever.
(I have thief too, but play engi and necro mostly)
Dear old gamer, you said you play Necro, right?
I would like to know why while I’ve spent hours and hours on my Necro, I’m hardly getting wins at an insane effort given and why when I’ve just rerolled Thief I’ve found my gameplay and score greatly improved without having any experience in it.
Don’t try to hide that, if you have played both Necro and Thief in competitive PvP, you have surely noticed that.
sPvP isn’t competitive PvP that’s why :o It’s a cesspool of low skill players in a zerg vs zerg fight gamemode where a strong burst has more chances to give you some “kill” than careful and skillful play. And since the scoring system rewards kills, in that zerg environment the scoring system is very close to a combined burst/DPS check which glass cannon thieves excel at.
Tried thief in PvP today and last night after getting annoyed with how much damage/ survivability a thief van pull off with little effort. If any of you seriously think this class is truly balanced then you’re kidding yourselves.
We’ll just wait and see what happens next patch.
These posts are so full of it. You can’t just “try” any class you haven’t played before, be level 80 in sPvP and perform well. I don’t believe it. If you really did this you probably got destroyed and frustrated because you had no clue what you were doing but still came here to say this to try to prove a point.
People who take the time to level a Thief a bit and understand the class learn how to counter it and stop complaining like this guy:
SORRY!!!!!”Actually, I have a thief and have been playing it in PvE over the last couple of weeks.
If you play a thief and understand how it works, then no matter what other class you play, you will know how to beat a thief. Everyone of my guild mates that complains, I train how to counter and they are fine. It’s a matter of understanding game mechanics.
Did you even read my post?
Yep and that’s my point. You say you know how to play a thief well yet still complain. Therefore you either are lying or you have a thief but don’t understand it well enough to counter it.
Ok… you obviously didn’t read my post so I’ll go over it again for you. I said I can play thief. I never said I can play a thief well, but that’s the point. Thief requires very little effort to be effective. I main as a D/D elementalist, so yes I can counter a thief with AoE and survivability.
The BS/HS thief is not the be all and end all of thief builds, I can kill a glass cannon thief on my ele IF i am able to counter him effectively. If not, I still go down very quickly even as a D/D bunker ele. I’m not saying that Thief needs a huge nerf because it doesn’t. It just needs a little fine tuning to be brought inline with the other classes, Thief is too easy for the amount of damage and utility you have available to you. 6-8k back stab crits on a non GC thief? just… lol.
I looked up “cloak and dagger” on the wiki… when I saw it was only 3s duration, I knew that couldn’t be what he used because I could have sworn he was stealth for well over 10 seconds (I know because he kept hitting my traps) so I looked if they had anything else…. They have… 8 stealth skills…. I knew they had at least 3 or 4, but wow.
I guess I should play my lowbie thief a bit more and try out some skills in the mist or something. Glad this isn’t as necessary for fighting other classes.
Would a damage pop up be too much to ask for, though? Maybe a pet with an F2 that can detect them for a few seconds?

First-> i wish i was 12, again…
Second-> im eager to the patch,all will remain the same, you can trust me on that;
Third-> your name also spells farm to me… and after nerf will still continue to spell.
You speak as though we thieves are not also… backstabed by other thieves, or suffer from other invisible thiefs in www,or any unintended unfair advantadges,as you call it… like, its my fault, the rendering issue (wich, by the way, we never know if its in effect, the other guy may not be seeing me, but how do i know that?),or like its my fault that the formula for the theory of relativity is Dmg=P*W*SC/A (wich, incidentally,is the root of all evil)… go blame anet, dude, they made it this way,not me, and stop conjecturing about my age.

Well, we could have 100 stealth skills we are still limited to 3 utilities and one healing.
Let’s see :
- Dagger 5 skill Cloak&Dagger
- Healing skill Hide in Shadows
- That fancy shadowstep + 5s stealth trap utility
- Blinding powder utility
- Shadow Refuge utility
Hmm, that’s 5 skills. What are the 3 other?
@efeatilla
i’am surprised that a person who has 5 full classes geared support these things. I have a guardian tank as a second .. I don’t think be strong, but i was killed by a burst thief little times …. but let’s be serious! With the thief i think be pretty good, but I will not tell you how many problems I had with GOOD wars, GOOD mesmer and GOOD necro … and then i don’t cry for nerf..the game is young and certainly the thief as OTHER CLASSES will be balanced … I just wish the little girls learn to play before moan and ask for nerf..

I’m not going to disagree that a back-stab build is a lower skillcap than other professions/builds. I personally don’t care about it since I don’t play one but I still don’t see the problem. You say you can win if you counter. It sucks to die to a profession with a lower skillcap (they made it even lower with the Assassin’s signet change) but playing a class with a higher skillcap lets you do crazy stuff. D/D ele looks like one of the most fun profession/builds to me.

6 : stolen item (in PvP, stolen from thieves themselves)
7 : stolen item with the EXACT same effect as 6 but different icon and animation
8 : downed skill 2
At best, you might plead for 6 stealth skills, not 8. It helps when you know the class to talk about it though.

It’s still there, and they get stealth from stealing if they’ve traited it so it’s silly to completely dismiss it. Why does the downed skill not count? Has it never saved you ever? Seriously, instead of trying to belittle others try to see their point first.

every class ll have a counter class for sure but a ranger can practice and learn his class all day if he is glasscannon specced and i see him first its 90% gonna be a 1 sec fight
which something i dont enjoy but im not gonna play another class until it gets nerfed either
and yes i agree tank guardians are hard for thieves because of aegis and good warriors ( if they specced to endure pain trait)

They had no point to begin with. OMG, thief got 250 stealth skills ! Nerf ! Wait, any trait you get is another trait you cannot select. Any utility you equip is another utility you have to pass by.
Stealing a thief is hardly an interesting thing to do unless forced. Stealing a mesmer clone is stupid, and anyway you do get random items out of them. The downed stealth is just two miserable seconds, it starts in CD and, it’s a downed skill! I must proudly say that this skill barely never saved my life, it only bought me 2s usually.
Then we get to :
- Instinctual Response : automatic stealth when you lose 20% health in one hit, 60s CD. You know this thing actually caused me to die already? Because it triggers out of my control, I ended up with the Revealed debuff at an unwanted moment and lost initiative on a C&D because of it.
- Last Refuge is the same as above, and you cannot even not take it
- The stealth on Steal trait is actually detrimental to the full Backstabk combo since it prevents you from using the C&D=>Steal=>Backstab combo.
Then let’s compare. You knew that mesmers got 4 skills that grant stealth, one trait and one downed too? And it’s their 2 downed which is always available.

I’ve never had much of a problem with Mesmer stealth. When I fight Mesmers I usually beat them fairly easily and actually get a kill without them escaping. Elementalists and thieves are really the only ones I ever have trouble chasing down. Perhaps mesmers just like me more than thieves do. :P
