Create a character, and play a thief, even to level 16. You will learn a ton of information. I was borderline wanting to create a QQ thread here my self because I was getting wrecked as a warrior in WvW by thieves all the time.

Thieves have a lot of tricks, and a lot of awesome utilites, but they can be countered. When playing on my thief in WvW I had a lvl 80 GS glass canon warrior in full exotics who chased me around for a good 5-10 minutes before my friends arrived and killed him, he could have easily killed me, he just didnt know how.

Now that I am back to playing on my warrior, Im happy to see a thief who spams heart seaker. I just dodge it as they lose initiative. Then beat the crap out of them.

A thief in Daggerstorm? Until a played thief, I used to try to kill them with my rifle, and I thought WTF is this OP skill. Now, I dodge roll into them and hack away with my axe.

Dagger thief just stealthed? I used to sit still and look around with my camera for where they went. Suddenly 3/4 my HP was gone, and I was left in oh kitten mode smashing buttons. Now that I’ve played a thief, I have a good (not always right but good) idea of what they are going to do, and where they are going to go, and how to keep my back away from them even though they are stealthed.

In short, it only takes a few days to learn what thieves do and how to play them, a few days that will change your gameplay and make you a better fighter. Not to mention you wont rage as much.

I did this and ended up staying with the class. Now level 80 and loving it! Beating people so hard they send me PMs asking what my build is and how I beat them.

The Thief community as a whole is pretty helpful. Don’t be afraid to ask us questions, even stupid questions. There’s a lot of good info, and we’re more than likely to help.

I rolled one for spvp the moment a thief with quickness killed my engineer with soldiers amulet (which has toughness and vitality) out of stealth before he appeared because of the broken stealth animations. for spvp everyone can create a lvl 1 thief and abuse the current stealth reanimation together with the quickness buff. the damage is on such a high level with quickness that your target dies before he even sees you and I doubt that it is fun for my opponent that he dies before I even reappear from stealth because the stealth animation is broken. I also doubt that it is fair but I wont care, I will abuse it as long it exists. I also dont care about the “hacker, I report you” hate mails afterwards.

except a nerf, it will come and denying will not stop it.

I don’t know why we should expect a nerf. The only thing you claimed was OP was Quickness and Stealth. Stealth won’t be nerfed any more than it already has, and everything you put in your post is more server related than simply an issue with the thief.

Quickness is OP – I’ll give you that. That’s not a thief problem, though. That’s a Quickness problem, and Thief isn’t the only one with it. It needs to be like 1.5x your attack speed, not 2×. Still, it’s kind of fine as is. Dodging can counter quickness very easily. Mesmers have a longer quickness, but it’s also stuck in one spot.

As for the “not appearing out of stealth” issue, it’s because the server isn’t loading you as fast as it should be. Not an issue with the thief.

People will complain about assassins in every single game with PvP. They’re too busy not building anything to keep themselves alive, but they expect the game to be adapted to their playstyle of their character. People need to stop running around by themselves with a glass cannon build. These builds aren’t made for 1v1 unless you’re a 1v1 class. Put a thief up against a Retaliation based Guardian, and we’ll see how OP he is.

wrong, its not because of server loading the server loads nothing for you lol. the fact that you claim it is a clear sign of denying and lack of networking architecture knowledge. you can actually target the thief the moment he jumps out of stealth but the reappear animation takes so long that you dont see whats going on and after one second you are dead. also you need to learn to read, I get killed by such thiefs in spvp when I carry thoughess gear around sometimes in less than a second. in fact I can kill a “retalation” guardian in 2 seconds out of stealth with quickness.

So you can beat a thief with a heavy armor class clap clap * clap*.
Normal mmo class balance goes like this thief beats mage,mage beats warrior,warrior beats thief-now granted the situation is kinda different in GW2 but the principle still stands.
Also wariors are OP and you should be ashamed :P

Yeah, if a Thief can take 3/4 of Warrior’s health in mere seconds, imagine what it does to an Elementalist. Just imagine. Even if you manage to dodge the initial bursts, that doesn’t mean you’ve won, far from that.

A Warrior managed to defeat a Thief, what an achievement!

Whether you can dodge Quickness/Haste/Frenzy doesn’t really matter. The problem is since quickness is so strong it allows a melee assist train to chain cc and destroy you before you can react. They should just remove all forms of quickness from the game. Including the weapon and trait procs since that is just RNG annoyance.

They shouldn’t remove a stat because you are getting destroyed by a thief using it. Tricks that totally counter “pistol whip + haste” are:
- stability+moving,
- shadow’s return,
- some invulnerability cooldowns, which I don’t know by names,
- your personal skill.

You can predict when the thief is going to start this combo. He won’t always start it right from stealth behind you, without any signals. Few times I managed simply to dodge it, and that single lucky dodge totally ruined his entire damage output – resulting in wasting entire endurance, initative, and his death a moment later.

I would suggest you to adapt to something else because the nerf will come for sure.

I think people may have missed the point…. this wasn’t specifically about a warrior beating a thief, just the fact that instead of dieing to a class and claiming they are OP, people should try the class first.
I only posted what I learned to do as a warrior, because I play a warrior.

Guess what, I can counter these thieves with 900 toughness and 17k HP using a stun breaker, insanity! I use Dagger/Pistol, I’m not going to claim I always win against haste burst thieves, but I will say I win about 80% of the time. There are just those times when you’re stuff is on cool-down or you react too slowly, but honestly the majority of the time I have no troubles with them. Keep in mind, Thief has to use stun breaker against all classes or they die, that’s not the case for all classes.

On to the main topic, the OP has it right. People really should try out multiple classes to see how they work, not just thief. While I’ve played Mesmer in the BWE, it’s been awhile so I’ve learned more playing it again.

This, I just wanted to comment on. It’s pretty much right. A reduction to the attack speed gained from Quickness is probably wise (and I say this as someone who has it on their Utility bar as something of a desperation skill rather than a main part of how my build works). However, the reductions really all that would be needed to penalty to Endurance, even currently, has a larger affect than people realize. You dodge the burst, that thief is pretty boned.

thats not a nerf (well, i spose it is in a sense) but it more appropriatly would be a bug fix as its simply unintended.

How to counter one is nice to know but how do you play one? I am having a lot of trouble on my secondary character, more then one mob is often stomping me and I can only sometimes kill vets alone. I feel so weak and even all that fancy dodging and stealthing is barely doing a thing for me. There are times where I feel the class is great and I am going around doin fine, but far too often I am frustratingly unable to complete something my primary character did with ease. I’m currently running with dagger/dagger sword/pistol but I have tried everything.
