I just watched a youtube video of a thief using s/d s/d and every time he swapped weapons he got initiative back.. How did he do that?

Quick pockets out of trickery.

I assure you that this method can be effective, albeit at a cost of variety of skills in your build.

With such a build you trait as many on swap sigils as is possible along with quickpockets and swap religously at the 10 second mark. With an S/d build using acro and running SE and upper hand , you can garner a whole lot of extra INI. Throw in RFI and you rarely have INI concerns.

in WvW as example, if you trait up quick pockets along with having energy sigils each weapon set, not only will every swap at 10 seconds provide 3 more ini but you will get more endurance and another dodge.

Out of curiosity, how old was this video you watched?
If it by any chance was Jumper’s video from a few years ago, I regret to tell you that it’s probably not going to be as effective as it used to be. Too many things that those sort of builds relied upon have been nerfed since then.

Still fun to play at times though!
