Is Full Magic Find Gear Viable At Endgame?
Full MF gear isn’t viable. Particularly as a thief it’s important to keep your crit up, you’ll want Berserker/Rampager/Knight gear.
For MF, put a sigil of luck on your offhand weapon and use Omnomberry bars for MF. Even with just a major sigil and the omnom bar you’ll have 40% MF without having to sacrifice your major stats the way you would with Traveler gear. If pressed, use MF upgrade gems on your rings and accessories, but even that’s questionable, you’ll still be sacrificing needed stats to do it.
Most people using MF gear are actually keeping it as a separate farming set, you don’t wanna go into a dungeon with a full MF set.
OK great, thanks for that. Pretty much all I needed to know!
MF gear is quite viable. Anyone telling you otherwise is BSing you.
You can do dungeons perfectly fine with FULL MF gear (assuming it’s all exotics of course).
What ANet does need to address is how much MF affects your chance for loot, and the quality level. They also need to make it work with chests (which they claimed it didn’t work a long time ago). Else, there’s really no incentive to getting MF besides farming events as a zerg at lvl 80 zones.

“getting MF besides farming events as a zerg at lvl 80 zones”
anything else – more damage yields more drops than more mf

Not true at all. MF has heavily diminishing returns compared to some other stats by-slot. If you’re using an MF chest piece, yeah, you’re losing a ton of stats, but the “cheap” MF is definitely worthwhile. You can pull 80 % or so are relatively cheaply if done correctly and it will have a massive effect on loot for only a few percent of damage loss.
So “full magic find gear”? Bad idea. No magic find gear? Equally bad idea, if you’re after loot.
If you are in a group of 5 people and you are killing a champ – some bits of mf is good.
If you are alone on champ or other people totally fail – you’ll win by just killing champ faster.
Besides, mf gear does not come with any synergy in stats. (preci+con damage? huh)
Mf gear is nice for orr event farms. But at things like troll or karka farm, especially with all those diminishing drops, MF literally does not matter as much as how many mobs can you kill in same time.
If you kill 11 mobs in full zerk gear in time you kill 10 mobs with one mf piece, do you know how much mf should that piece give?
It is viable, until a certain level in FotM.

You’re vastly overestimating the state tradeoffs for cheap MF. Switching a 3 % MF shoulder piece for 12 more power on a ‘zerker shoulder piece won’t make you kill 10 % faster, not even close. Hoelbrak -> Pirate has a similar rate of return, trading 165 power for 50 % MF. Ancient Karka Shell, Triforge, and Lunaria/Solaria compare even better, having excellent combat stats with basically “free” MF.

you know. if, say, base drop of a rare is 1% you would have to get at least 100 rare drops in one test run to get out of what could a be statistical mistake.
That is the problem. If me, or anyone else, got 100+ rares per day, the effect of MF would be obvious and very much worth it. But say, if i get 10 rares one day without mf and 20 rares next day with 100 mf, there is no way for me to prove that I would not have got them without that mf.
For such low base drop rate for those, you cannot and should stop counting POTENTIAL benefit. Benefit of zerk gear can be easily proven, counted, showed in very real numbers – in case of mf you can only speculate how much of an effect it has
If you’re only farming then it’s viable. You can use it for events, exploring and in dungeons if your group think it’s okay and you know the dungeon well enough to know how not to die.
Just keep two sets with you, one magic find and one with your preferred stats and just switch for whatever you need.
I just want to add that if you’re a condition thief the mf gear you can get is pretty decent. You lose vitality for magic find, which isn’t all that important if you know the dungeon and know how to avoid being hit (which you should know, being a thief). You can still keep your damage, but lose some hp. I use the Mad King’s gear, which is pretty awesome
Explorer set is a power/precision/mf gear. Glass cannons only lose critical damage
GL – “The Afternoon’s Watch” [OATH]

Well, the whole point of precision is to do more damage through crit damage, so you’d still want some berserker gear mixed in to get like 50% crit damage.
What about using pirate runes on armor? 6 piece will provide +50% MF, a PARROT!, which hits for ~1k, might duration and an aoe might. Or even travelers runes with +50% MF, +50 vit, +5% movement
