wait wait wait wait…..99% of D/P thieves run 25 30 0 0 15 ???? really wow. tell me what is the “meat and potatoes” of this build? where does the dmg and defense come from? im gonna love this one. :P

It’s a tPvP spec obviously. It’s pretty much the regular backstab spec that is very similar to D/D. Only difference is that it has much more utility than regular D/D. Main combo is (basilisk) 5-2-steal-1, execution speed is around a second. Dazespam to autoattacks against single players is quite effective finisher aswell, shuts down very slippery targets pretty well. It’s not played like the wubwub “permastealth” build where you stack up invis.

Combo damage comes from:

  • Steal gives you fury/might/puts a condition on target (+10% damage)/mug non-crit damage
  • 5-10% dagger damage (force on mainhand+dagger training, you can use an “Improvisation” or “Back fighting” as alternative if you don’t want dagger training)
  • Can use might for Assassins signet trait if you prefer it. Personally I don’t like it, staff guard can buff you well enough in midfights.
  • +20% damage from executioner when target is below 50% (heartseeker from the combo will take target below 50% when you don’t do the burst against a full hp target).
  • +10% damage when you’re over 90% hp from Scholar runes (you’ll do your burst from full hp usually)
  • As a bonus Sigil of Air on offhand that can proc from mainhand skills

Your main active defense is shadowstep for stunbreak, sbow for mobility, spamming from offpoint and Z-axis abuse and d/p 5-2 for stealth to drop target, but again 5-2 chain plays a much lesser role in tPvP than in hotjoin/wubwub for example. If you fail your combo you retreat and try a clean opener a bit later.

Shadow refuge plays both an offensive and defensive role. Offensive uses are solo or group stealthed bursts. Defensive uses are of course clutch target drop when getting trained (needs very clever placement, since the area will get nuked hard), as a distraction (positive side of the last reason), very good clutch stomp prevention (someone is almost finishing stomp on your guard->drop SR and cancel their stomp attempt->2 people rez and get him up in 1.5 secs).

Since this is not wubwub spec, you’re not on ini regen/stealth focus. 15 points in trickery is to accommodate the quite expensive opener combo. It relies more on positioning/mobility as an active defense rather than stealth chaining. It’s because you don’t have the time to play around as a roamer, target must be dead in less than 10 seconds in sidepoint fights.

my point is you are basically relying on auto attack …..if u miss 5 2 steal 1 then ur out of initiative and a sitting duck. might as well use shadow refuge and try again 15 secs later. costing your team -1 man. its a bad idea and hurts the team. you have no initiative control in that build and in spvp/tpvp you are hitting a good BS around 6k maybe more depending on armor n runes etc. 9 initiative if u miss is huge. ur a sitting duck afterward :P

Here’s my take on thieves after having just lvl’d my thief to 80.

Let’s be honest — thief really isn’t the best class for DPS. There is a class that is suited much better than thieves to dish out the most damage, called Warrior. Of course, you can have a Thief with better gear against a more inferior Warrior, and the Thief would win, but if they both have exceptional gear with cleverly laid out build then overall, Warrior would beat Thief at this game.

DPS-wise, Thief is not the best.

Thief is also not as good as other classes for tanking. When people want to play their Thief as a tank, they’ll soon realize that it is hopeless despite having invested in Toughness, Healing, and Vitality; they will find themselves having to dodge out of combat instead of staying in combat for prolonged period of time, which is what an effective tanker should do.

Thief is not the best at tanking. It is the Guardian’s job.

Thief has some great support skills — they can stealth allies and give regeneration; give out venoms to the party; and are very effective at reviving downed allies with Shadow Refuge. However, there are couple other classes that are rewarded with better support skills. Guardian and Warrior all have shouts and such that will give a large amount of boons. Necromancers and their conditions will leave a challenge for opponents. Engineers and their inventions will supply a steady flow of support for the whole team.

Thief is not the best at support…

Finally, while Thief does have good condition skills.. there are Necromancers, Mesmers, and Engineers.

So what is the Thief the best at? Why go for a GC when you can roll a Warrior? and why would you ever think of making a tank/support thief?

Let’s be honest, you never ever touched other class and you are a complete noob,

So, you thought that you need the dps of a warrior, the stealth of a mesmer, the conditions of a necromancer and the toughness of a guardian…

Man… I cannot understand people that only plays when they have a huge advantage against the others, don’t you enjoy to fight another person in the same conditions? You need to have the advantage all the time?

Don’t you understand how the thief is meant to be played? You can go in full berserker, hit a couple of times a guy and kill him,

Plus, if you wasn’t able to kill him you can run away, restart the fight and come back… that’s the reason most fags play this class,

Try to go full berserker with a warrior,

Try to go full knight with a guardian,

Try to go full rabid with a necromancer,

Then you will realize why thieves at WvW are in the best spot to roam and kill at disposal with ease and almost no skill,

Don’t talk to me about toughness and vitality, damage avoidance is all in this game

Any moron knows that in order to win anything, you have to have an advantage. Is English your native language? You’ve butchered it.

In order to win you need to be more skilled, not stronger you kitten

That’s the point of the fair competition

We can speak in any of the other 3 languajes I speak, but i’m sure the only one you know is this one, right genious?

Have a nice day

to be fair there is also a heavy gear/stats issue. A P/P thief isn’t going to be beating a tank/retal/burn-block guard any time soon.
