I was thinking about gw2 today and came across this thought. I mean in gw2 the only thing matters is damage dealing. How much damage one can put. The rest of stuffs are not that important. Why is that?

I once played a mmo game called Gayax. And I loved playing it with a support role class. While other players were dealing massive damage, I was doing the role of support which was making sure no one dies and buffing everybody. But in gw2 there is no class as such thing. Everyone is dealers. People have to survive by themselves. No buffing or healing others is necessary. Why is that?

Arenanet should improve buffings and healings so that people can work together more. I want to see support role classes in gw2!

And by the way I play a thief in JQ so I wrote this thread here. Hope no one minds:)

I think the class closest to what you wish for is guardian, but even they aren’t full supporters.
It was arenanets decision to remove tanks and healers, they did that, so that every class can do nearly everything. And to be hinest I absolutely love this system! Even when you spec into support you can still defeat other classes in a 1v1 it’s just more difficult. And it makes PvE more awesome, because there isn’t just 1 Tank that gets healed and the rest just deals damage, you have to look for yourself. (Main reason why i found wow boring eventough some raids were awesome)

But like i already said if you want to support go with Guardian, they have great survivability and can apply a massive amount of boons with small healing. And especially in WvW is this simply amazing and they have some nice cc like Ring of Warding aswell.

GW2 has a unique setup, even if you don’t see one profession dedicated on support role, everyone is actually bringing partial support to the group—that’s where the Utility Skills comes in. The damage skills are usually on the weapons and the support skills are in the utilities.

Now the question is, which profession has the most utility skills that can support allies?

That would depends on what kind of support your allies need.

For example, damage support can come from Thieves and Warrior. Escape support can come from Thieves and Rangers. Healing support can come from Elementalists and Guardians. You get the idea.

So in a group setup, you have to bring something that can support your group. Even thieves bring Shadow Refuge.

But the most versatile profession is the Elementalist, they can change roles on the fly by simple changing attunements.

PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.

I play a mesmer support build, focused on giving loads of boons to my team and aoe healing, while doing decent dmg. the other types of useful support are things like elementalists dropping their water fields and lots of stuff guardians do. there are many ways to support a team for every class. the problem is that the game does not help you out much in terms of user interface that gives feedback about the quality of your support. for example, a guardian might drop aegis on a teammate, but won’t easily know if that aegis just blocked 100 or 6k damage. the second problem with support is that those roles are not really rewarded in game (in terms of getting credit, exp, and loot for kills). so it’s not realistic to go full support, unless you’re just a generous person.
