Is thief bad?
You’re either really good or really bad at thief. Very little in between with it. It does fine for any game mode provided you build it right. I’m not a great thief but I’m not awful either, it’s mostly people who can’t adapt to them(playing as or against) complaining.
Good thieves prevail, bad thieves rerolled engis/eles/wars or anything really that runs current meta (aka celestial might stacking crap).
Too much effort to play one when you can drool on keyboard as cele ele and collect points. Thieves by itself are not bad the current meta just favors other classes/builds, besides you don’t want more than 1 thief on team.
Obviously consistent nerfs every single patch are not exactly big motivation for playing the class.
[Teef] guild :>
Thieves are in a pretty good place in the current meta. Good dps and trash skipping in PvE. Good single target burst and map rotation abilities in PvP. Good for ganking in small-scale and zerg fights in WvW.
That’s not to say thieves are the optimal choice for all (or maybe any) of these things, but thieves have viable, unique, and well-defined roles in all three game-modes.

^^^^ This right here.
I dont think WvW role diversity (for thief) has expanded either since last I played.

I agree with you on your first point, but you can’t “drool on keyboard” as a cele ele and win. They are more forgiving than a Thief though because they’re not playing zerker. Throw a zerker on an Ele and it will be the same as playing a Thief in that regard.
You’re either really good or really bad at thief.
I can solo some dungeons as a Thief, but do not ask me to play Thief in PVP..or WvW
Just like Selver said, you’re either really good or really bad.
The best Thieves, are those that use Shadow Refuge and immediatly dash right trough it, having 2 seconds stealth and wonder why they were not able to skipp the trash mobs.

Thief as a class needs a lot of work, and there are some very specific flaws the devs refuse to address or comment on. However, if you’re willing to either use a build that avoids the poorly designed traits (I’m looking at you, Last Refuge) or to simply bear through when the game decides to kill you, then sure, it’s great.
Thief isint that hard , don’t be delusional. 1v1 ing cele bunkers on thief is hard but since its not your job it doesn’t count. The role of thief is easy in PvP. As long as you’re not always in downed state and don’t get farmed by other thieves, you’re still useful just by being a thief.
What exactly is the role of a S/D thief in PvP because I keep hearing the statement of “your job as a thief.”

Move around the map quickly to get easy caps/decaps, +1 fights, and burst down low targets.

I’ve always found that s/d should be in the team fight and watching for it to snowball one way or another. Once it’s all but over sneak past the backpoint defender (if he isn’t sitting on point that is) and decap far. Often times if your team is tanky you can decap (but not full cap) then head back to mid and come out ahead that way.
D/P is slower and in my opinion it shouldn’t be pushing far except in semi rare circumstances (like a disorganized pug game). Stay in the team fight, avoid focus fire, and spike down low targets to snowball the team fight in your favor. D/P doesn’t have the same ability to disengage as s/d so it should be really careful about going far alone.
