I need help with this.

I’m a Mesmer and this is how a typical battle goes:
Shadow step, stunlock
steal
shadow step
then I explode.

I know I’m mostly wrong with my terminology that I’ve used, I don’t know anything about the class.
Can any one give me some tips?

Believe it or not, Mesmers are the one class I’m worthless against with my Backstab build in sPvP.

They always disappear and put a clone in their place, so I stab the clone instead making my attack worthless. This usually results in my health going down, and the mesmer’s health still high.

I think the skill is called Decoy which really annoys thieves (and me). Also their stealth skill is good to avoid the first few strong attacks from the thieves while giving the thief lots of annoying clones to deal with. This is when you go in and confuse the brain out of him.

I don’t see how he shadow stepped twice, shadow step has a very long cool-down.

He could of specced Steal to additionally Daze you for 1 second, or used basilisk venom which is a breakable stun (use a stunbreak.) if he made steal do damage steal would stun you with the venom because it does damage now.

Best advice I could give you is, Get Runes of Melandru, it makes stuns that are 1 second 0.30 seconds instead, giving you the time to “DODGE” because a thief has a 0.20 second chance to attack again, this will make it hard to cloak and dagger and backstab at the same time.

Once a thief blows his initative and cannot get behind you, hes dead, a thief specced this way has almost no survivability, because they went 20 points in power tree, 20 in toughness (atleast.) and 20 in precision, this leaves little to no room for defense, since the toughness traits he took were offensive.

Get Vitality as well, and if you have any traits that improve endurance or vigor regeneration, take them.

A thief naturally learns how to dodge in his time of game-play leveling, due to the fact if you don’t dodge in pve as a thief you die, so he may be better then you are at this kind of gameplay.

As said above use decoy, its a stunbreak also I believe and when I am mesmer and go against a back-stabby thief I tend to decoy then Mirror Images, Illusionary leap, swap and then blurred frenzy with Mind Wrack for big damage which should kill any of those of those glassy thieves or at severely damage him.

Yes, you’ll need to get runes specifically to counter thieves because no other class is worth considering when making your gear decisions (not even your own).

You’re in the wrong forum section if you’re seeking help on how to kill a thief. No thief player could give you an in depth guide on how to fight their class with another class. You’d have better luck asking the mesmers. Also, as some have previously mentioned, mesmers are quite annoying for most glass-cannon thieves to kill, simply because they HAVE to target the right target in order to beat a mesmer. If a glass cannon thief don’t take down a mesmer with their burst, the thief’s going to die pretty easily. Only advice I can give you is to trick a thief into attacking a clone and he’ll drop like a fly.

I think your gear isn’t really something that needs to be specced to counter thieves as much as your utilities. Also, the choice in your utilities should also not be specced into countering thieves specifically but for the situation. If you’re dying a lot (be it thief or any other class) switch out some of those damage utilities for some survivability / stunbreaks.

Stunbreaks / dodges / Invulns will throw a wrench into any glass cannon’s burst rotation…

Notice how i mentioned glass cannon… not just Thieves.

I hate mesmers as in, HATE. always do the mass dmg spell then awwwwwwwwww dang it’s a clone. should’ve used 1 and check for health dropage

if you’re in a rly bad situation, pop illusions, then use your OWN stealth abilities. that seems to always confuse me for some reason.

sry guys but OP is not complaining that thieves are OP. He just asked us how to kill us.

@Turtles All The Way Down.5608: I think that the Superior Rune of Melandru has a -25%stun duration, not a -25% thieves stun duration.
