I don’t think I’m over-complicating things, because that routine is the same whether you sum things up under the “precast” and “heart seeker as needed” or not, its still more complicated than the rallying cry of most on the forums calling 3 button kills. I wasn’t trying to make the argument that glass cannon thieves are pro, I was simply stating they work more for the kill than they usually get credit for.
To answer DesertRose, Yes simply moving Mug to a 30 point slot probably won’t fix them completely, It was an overstatement to say it would fix everything. But I still think a distinction between downing and killing needs to be made. With no stealth, a thief can be downed fairly easy by any downed class that has built for substantial damage. I’d say its a misrepresentation to say that the thief should be able to outright own anyone 1v1 because their buddies can kill them, but its not overreaching to say that a spec similar to this that works off of trading the thief’s life for a high value target’s life should be completely viable in the meta.
I also think it is a good idea that Mug would break stealth, I neglected to mention it because I was focusing on the combo’ing issue. There’s no reason why it should be able to do damage without breaking stealth, especially since this adds to the lack of telegraphing that many people complain about. However, if you take it out of the stealth portion of the rotation, It will just get more complaints because the thief will probably just use it as an opener after the precast ie: OMG Mug shouldn’t be able to teleport AND apply basilisk venom. Nerf!
I have been tinkering around with some builds lately and think that when it comes to the shortbow, you could probably balance it nicely by raising the initiative costs. Being able to spam cluster bomb so many times at 2k a piece from point blank range is pretty crazy, especially when you can spec a 30/30/0/0/10 build with traps and focus on doing more dmg when the target is less than %50 hp. You can essentially get a AOE that hits upwards of 5k and spams 6-7 (This spam number is a guess, the damage is not. It can and will crit for that high.) times before you have to wait for initiative regen. I find I don’t use crippling shot as much as I thought I would, seeing as how If I’m chasing I find it much more reliable to use Infiltrator’s arrow rather than waste the cripple by widening then distance I have to cover. As for trick shot. I usually only hit 1k on other glass cannons, but would gladly trade a few hundred in damage damage for a couple more bounces or the ability to negate obstructed (Within reason of course: no going through walls, just around corners, above walls with no roof.) Afterall, it is supposed to be a Trick Shot.
Heartseeker being able to spam that many times doesn’t concern me because if your getting off more than 2, its a waste of initiative because that means they weren’t at low enough hp to warrant casting HS in the first place. perhaps shorten the distance of the jump a bit so people don’t spam it as a gap closer as much, or I suppose alternatively up the initiative and leave the range where it is.
Infiltrator’s Arrow is perfect and if you touch it I will gut you.
(Too Be Fair: I haven’t read all of these posts its 4am here and I was simply gazing thru the forums to see if the size of the toon increased or decreased the area for backstab, IE a Norn being easier to BS then a Asura. So if any of you know feel free, otherwise this is just my thoughts on thieves BS being OP)
I don’t understand why people are so up in arms about thieves.
I for one believe its because they are either,
Glass Cannons, crying that their dying Ya, that makes sense
People unwilling to learn how to play their class….Truth
People running around with the I am a Warrior/Guardian in heavy play with a great big two hander I dont need tough,vit or condition removers IRTANK!…ya I know its a glass cannon…you know its a glass cannon…but had to do it.
I have spent a lot of time….I mean a lot of time. PvPing and SPvPing..mostly randoms because I dont get to tourney much..trust me I would if I could but I refuse to PuG SPvP Tourneys, most of the time it ends being horrendous and no thieves are involved. However I try to take my PvPing seriously.
PuGs are often the reason why people die…they just see Heartseeker and it must be the work of those pesky thieves!
Maybe I am wrong…From what I have seen..any good player worth their salt will make a thief sweat and a better player will kill them. Some are natural counters due to builds and traits of classes. Others are just well seasoned players that know what their looking for what exactly they’re facing.
If you take nothing but power pres +crit or anything that implies dmg…with no care of life or dmg avoidance…of any kind….don’t be shocked when running in a PuG and something OMGWTF hits you upside the head….and just so you all know… I have fought a warrior rifle spec’d that hit me for 12k with Kill Shot, my thief has 2230 tough and had protection up at the time..ya…I went from 18k to 6…and barely dodge/stealth’d the Volley he fired leaving me at near 800 hps…
IMHO I think the more you can survive a fight…the more dmg you can do. Yes Big numbers can be great fun….but…it mostly be the end of you. Your death for 1 kill…..then rezz repeat…
Any class can be OMGWTF I’ve been hit for 11k hip shot from an eng…I have been chain fear’d over necro’s crap on the floor… been out kited and trapped to death by rangers. Most annoyingly killed by BC / HB + Frenzy by 2 warriors working together…Break Stun One…Hit with other 2 sets of HB to the face…Gah! but /shrug
I would really just love to see less QQing and more fighting. With people trying to improve themselves as players not looking for Anet to fix problems that in all honesty aren’t that big of a deal..I play the thief in SPvP because playing my warrior would be to me at least. Too Easy.
perma-stealth is nearly achievable with BP+HS trick (u only stay out of stealth for the half a second activation time of HS after hitting black powder and you will also need hide and refuge for when initiative runs low)
Is there any scope to having perma-stealth? not really, and if you screw up (the timing is extremely tight) you will be kittened for initiative and cd’s most likely
What is really beyond me is that I very rarely see thieves use BP+HS combo to get stealth and hit the BS (no matter what the setting). GC d/p build is absolutely fantastic! Heck I can even tank some non-casters with my blind spam and i have only 13-14k hp
Mug is fine. On an 80 in exotics or PvP gear it maxes out at around 4k crit. These 5-6k numbers are from WvW, and gone are the days of getting a 9k Mug crit with 150% dmg from ASig.[cut]

What nerf are you referring to? The Assassin’s Signet change? That actually increased the damage of Steal/Mug because that signet now give + 15% to the whole combo, not + 50% damage to Backstab.
A Ranger which doesn’t boost his Toughness in any way (equipment or trait points) has 1980 armor and if the Thief goes full glass cannon (30/30… two Venoms) it’s possible to crit with Mug for a little over 6k damage.
Very interesting original first post. A thief has found out that there is a class that he can’t kill with ease if the class (mesmer) survives the initial onslaught. His conclusion is therefor that the thief must be a balanced class.
Did the whole thief community sniff glue when they were younger?
