and went with the “cookie cutter” spec.

After about 1 hour, I can safely say that the thief class is, if nothing else, beginner-friendly.

What do you mean by the “cookie-cutter spec”? Also, please elaborate on what you mean by beginner friendly. If you just sat there spamming two then you played a horrible, horrible Thief.

i did the same thing, and:
ranger is too easy.
necro/mesmer/warrior, easy.
thief/guard is ok.
engi/ele, a bit harder.

By “beginner friendly” I mean that the learning curve isnt very steep. Just loading up a thief, taking a quick glance at the abilities and specs, and then you play thief as good as most people. Even warrior/ranger has a steeper learning curve than thief.

Not saying its overpowered, its just easier to play than other classes.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this game in general isn’t hard to play. The “hard” part comes from knowing when to dodge and when to engage, when to blow your cooldowns. Thieves, however, do punish bad players. Even in the hands of a bad player.

That being said, a bad thief will get annihilated by a good player with well timed dodges.

Yes, on the surface Thieves may seem very simple. Or at least you can play them that way. If you spec accordingly you can get away with spamming a special move + auto attack.

But once you get over the fact that yes, you can effectively spam Heartseeker, there’s a lot of other things going on about the class. I don’t think Thieves are any less complex than other classes. They just go further with a simplistic play-style.

I see a great number of terrible thieves(and 100b warriors as well) every day in SPvP.
My explanation is that they are some other classes main, that got they arses kicked by some good thief(or good 100b warrior),and desided to join the ranks of the OP class.
Usually they go high dmg/crit spam or at best Pistol Whip.
At first they have good success ganking unexpected targets or those, who don’t have stun breakers…
After a while they find themselves AGAIN victims of the same good thieves that killed them before, plus every other classes decent players.
At the end they realize, that the grass isn’t greener on the other side, and they finish going back to the original main+they start flood thief forum with requests of nerfing…

Easy to play, difficult to master. I can pretty much guarantee you weren’t using your mobility to the best of the Thief classes ability. I guess I agree if you just went with a standard glass cannon build though. You can’t label a whole class on a single type of build.

I probably did not play the thief at its peak of efficiency. Thats my point. Thief is easy compared to a lot of other classes. “Easy to play, hard to master” is easy to say, but what does that even mean? Are there any classes that are opposite, that are hard to play, but easy to master? What?

I doubt a class thats easy to play to begin with is any harder to master than other classes.

And about builds, sure, you can probably make a build that`s harder to play. But again, what does that prove? “Thief can be challenging to play if you really, really want it to” ?

Doesn`t change the fact that its beginner-friendly.

As to being overpowered or not, that depends on how the class performs when played really well and efficient, and then compared with other classes which are being played at their peak efficiency. Havent seen a lot of comparisons of that sort yet, suppose the game is a bit too young yet, but right now, beginner thiefs are facerolling beginners of other classes, since its easier to play.

Your responses to easy to play hard to master are quite silly. Of course nothing is hard to play and easy to master. There are varying degrees of hard to master though. For instance, Warrior is easy to play easy to master in my experience. Elementalist would be hard to play hard to master in my opinion.

It’s not easy to play, working out a viable build and how to maximize its synergy in your playstyle for the build. You may grasp the basics but after playing in plenty of matches you can begin to grasp the major weaknesses. It isn’t that you choose the play a challenging build, you choose a build for a playstyle that clears up the worst weaknesses (incoming condition damage & initiative inefficiency/starvation)

I can’t take opinions like this serious, somebody plays Thief for 10 minuts and thinks he knows it all. When you win tournemants in e-sport as a Thief then you can judge the class.

Main: Thief
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)

i’d agree that its easy to learn how to play a Burst Damage build and go around killing people 1on1.

learning how to be effective under more diverse circumstances takes alot more time though. playing a support role with a Thief is often important but hard to do. Learning the best ways to maintain control over map points is a big challenge. Thief is a squishy class, but very slippery, so defending a point as a Thief requires intimate knowledge of how to use the defensive abilities that are based around stealth and evasion. this isn’t easy.

so yeah, easy to learn how to get 1on1 kills. hard to learn how to achieve group support and map control.

nothing hard in using quickness, jumping out of stealth and kill the target in one second before the stealth reappear animations ends so your target cant see whats happening… if you think this is hard then I suggest you to play engineer or elementalist, then you will see what hard means.

So i’ve tried what you’ve said in your main post Ranja, in a logical and scientifical way.
specced my Thief as 30/30, Asked a friend of mine which weapon set he wants, D/D or S/P. then set the traits and util skills accordingly. then asked him to play the profession. and just sat there and watched him play.
The result could’ve been an amazing award-winning comedy show.

As for your own arguement, you said it’s Beginner friendly cause you’ve tried playing it 10minutes? well…since you sound like a beginner and you’ve played a Whole 1 hour, i guess i should accept what you’re saying.

I created a Thief today only for spvp and, i think is a exploit or bug, I win all games always in 1, 2 or 3 position… Then, i stop play him and use again my elementalist.
Thief is really PURE noob and easy reward hero. I dont change runes, traits or weapons, just enter to spvp and spam 1, 2 and 3. Sometimes i use heal for escape. I just changed my elite ( more thieves rlz ).
I really prefer my elementalist, even if i cant kill a bunny.

Ranja,

Yup they are friendly if you go up against people who are noobs but once you run into good players that cookie cutter spec will require a lot of skill to pull off and live.

Warriors are another one that can be amazing and friendly against noobs but much harder vs a skilled player.
