I’ve just tried to get a Sneak Attack after stealing with a Hidden Thief trait and completely failed. While the thief remains stealthed when stealing with a Main-Hand dagger, stealing with a Main-Hand pistol is always followed by a single shot which leaves stealth.

I’ve removed all other traits except Hidden Thief (to make sure that the problem is a not a combination of Serpent’s Touch or Mug) and the described behaviour remains.

Does anyone know whether or not this is an intended effect or a bug?

Have you tried turning auto attack off? Curious because I haven’t tried pistol in quite some time.

As already said, just turn your auto attack off, it should “fix” this issue.

Just remember, if you are going to turn off auto attack, make sure you don’t have any abilities in the “queue” after mashing the auto attack button for a while when hitting steal. Reason why this happens, steal doesn’t cancel any ability currently in use (causing most of the current mug/cnd/bs qqs atm).

@Katsumoto, Wolfen: indeed that does the trick. Seems like a bug to me as Ichishi said.

@Wilow: that’s going to be the harder task. I don’t seem to get my instincts to accept that pressing 1 a single time keeps the attack going automatically, especially since I switch around in a fight some time, to spread the conditional love around, which requires me to press the attack button several times (I don’t like autoattack on target change).

Anyway thanks for the input everyone, that answers my problem.

It’s a bug. And it stinks. Maybe it will get fixed in the patch tomorrow?

In the meantime, if you have keyboard or mouse that can do macros, you can make a macro to holster/sheath your weapon (this is not bound to a key by default, I’ve assigned mine to Z), then have it do Steal (F1).

A bit of a pain that this is required, but it works!

SpaceCowboy, this doesn’t work for me.

I’ve tried both stealing from an non-aggressive enemy with weapons holstered as well as holstering weapons during a fight and stealing afterwards, and both times my thief fired a shot immediately afterwards when auto-attack was enabled.

It’s probably because you spam abilities. You have to wait for your abilities stack to clear before using it. Reason being, steal is instant regardless of the stack, meaning if you catch it midway between vital shot (.5 second cast time), it will decloak you the instant vital shot follows through. This is why the Steal + Cloak and Dagger combo is so popular. To prevent this don’t press abilities too quickly and wait for your character to finish his or her attacks then steal. It will always work then. So it’s NOT a bug.

I quit taking the hidden thief trait because it almost never works for me. Autoattack on/off, ranged/melee, doesn’t matter. It’ll work now and then, but it’s not at all reliable. I just precast CnD because it’s the only sure way.

Agree never.. I had issues with it in all my set ups..

I am running p/d now and just dropped it. CnD works fine for when I want the mini unload from stealth pistol 1
