Ok… to start off, no flaming the OP

I battled a tough opponent last night in WvW (1v1) he was a mesmer – I do not know how to play a mesmer, however I did notice he was “shattering clones” and I also noticed he had put 5 stacks of confusion on me. (Confusing Images)

All I want to know is … what is your tactic for dealing with this?

P.S. with 5 stacks of confusion I killed myself quickly.

Confusion punishes the heck out of glass cannons but you mitigate it the same way you would any other condition, tank it or remove it. Aside from that, make sure you’re identifying the real mesmer and dodge when he goes for the shatter.

True.

I had Knight’s gear on. I suppose against a condition build I would need +Vit

I instantly targeted the real Mesmer before he popped his clones (I can’t believe people forget ‘T’) but to stay away from his clones while he has better range abilites (I was D/P at the time, but then again anything without an escape would fail against this build.

maybe if I went S/P , S/D for Infiltrators Strike or P/P , P/D to stay at range to combat this, but pure D/P or D/D wouldn’t work against his build. any thoughts? can D/P or D/D still work?

Find the right one:

Steal, CnD, Backstab, Heartseeker, Heartseeker, Heartseeker.

Fighting a condition (confusion) Mesmer is a constant battle of backing in and out of combat (ideally, with stealth, but dodging well and teleporting is good enough). You want to get rid of his phantasms as soon as possible, you play dodgy and defensive until you get rid of them and them you engage the Mesmer; if you see the shatter, eat it and play defensive until it wears of or cleanse it with shadow step. You can also abuse Cluster Bomb shotgun style with good positioning to get rid of their illusions pretty fast, do that from afar to avoid the confusion when they die. In PvP you should always have autoattack turned off, confusion is nasty at 5 and more stacks.
Also, using Sword main hand becomes that much easier (Infiltrators Strike).

With D/D abuse C&D creating your own time to have the advantage at positioning while waiting in between confusion stacks without attacking (confusion wears off pretty fast) and use Dancing Dagger to get rid of the illusions. Don’t try to burst down a Mesmer, it just wont work against a decent player.

Controling the time of the battle is key in this fight in my opinion.

I run a shortbow build and the mesmer is my bogie class for sure. in fact no other class or build of a class is an issue in the slightest except for mesmers.

I find that yes backing in and out profits but making use of my shortbows imobilise from stealth is the key to victory, imboilise steal in, burst then back the hell out for a bit and stop attacking. problem is a good mesmer can regain health quickly…. I don’t normally run with much condition removal as I get most of it from roll for iniative and heal.

I think I’ve resigned to the fact that mesmers against my build and playstyle are tough to take down but since none of the other classes are a problem at all (mostly based on the fact that we are bordering on ridiculously overpowered) I actually look forward to fighting mesmers. I do however draw the line to fighting them underwater as they can basically kite you forever if they have an ounce of common sense.

I use p/d and have an alright time against mesmers. I think that is because I have a start/stop/start play style with my build. So I’m going in and out of stealth frequently, giving me plenty of time to let confusion drop off, and giving mesmsers fewer opportunities to get all their little buddies out without a target to attack.

If they have solid condition removal, it just makes for a longer fight, but eventually I wear them down.

Why grind dungeons? Only relevant content…
Why? Gives needed gear…
Why do you need this gear? To do dungeons… duh.

They can kite a class with a ranged cripple, rapid fire, and can turn their back to the target and use the “3” ability (pushes back and leaves a poison trial)? Wow, that does sound overpowered.

Shotgun with shortbow’s #2 and keep poison on them. When playing my Mesmer I hate that crap and love to eat backstabbers.

Also, playing a bit of the other classes will give you a great deal of knowledge on how to beat them and learn which builds are push-overs and which will try to drag the fight out until help arrives. A shotgun shortbow is a sure fire way to destroy mesmers in most situations due to their inability to rely on clones.
