My Impressions of Thief and Stealth
Here we go. Can’t anybody just l2p and get over with it? It’s been a year people hav-wait….what? Someone who actually has tried the class out and learned how not-so-easy it is. Well I…I was going to….um…uh thanks?…..I’m going to leave now -puts on cloak and runs-
Recently I picked up my level 32 thief and actually started playing it, mainly in sPvP, as I’m too weak for WvW, and there’s no way I’m leveling through PvE. Keep in mind, I’m coming at this from a Mesmer main.
One of the biggest problems a lot of people have with thieves is the spamming of stealth. I have never really directly had a problem with stealth. Whenever I die to a D/X thief, I never think “OMG STEALTH OP”. Rather “I should have made some attempt to make the backstab harder for him instead of just running away in a straight line.” After actually playing this style of thief, I have found that, while it does create a huge amount of survivability, you kind of need it. On a full zerk build, you can get away with about 1 mistake every 30 seconds; 2 and you’re dead. Also, anyone who isn’t braindead (like I sometimes am) will try to move around or in some way make thier movements unpredictable to make landing backstab harder.
Perhaps a D/P thief has it a bit easier with the stealth spam, but it also costs 8 initiative. Still, it could be toned down. However, D/D I find is very balanced; high-risk, high reward. If you miss CnD, you’re probably dead, and the long cast time doesn’t make it easier.
I would have to say that a well played PU Mesmer is probably stronger against other classes than any stealth thief is. From now on, whenever I look at a “stealth op” thread, I will only think “l2p”.
You contradict yourself a lot. If it is a L2P issue, why does D/P ‘need to be toned down’?
Also, if you come from Mesmer who is borderline OP with stealth, of course the thief will seem harder. The opinion is skewed.

I only said that D/P is a bit op. A skilled player should still be able to deal with it. I don’t play PU Mesmer simply because it makes me feel unskilled when I can just faceroll my keyboard to win 1v2s. On mesmer, I usually stick to shatter, lockdown, or troll teleports.
My god this is actually one of the very few times someone FIRST TRIED A THIEF and then decided if he is OP BROKEN HAX NERF NEEDED NO SKILL STEALTH SPAM NOOB.
Faith in humanity (and the game) slightly restored.
As a top 500 soloq thief in EU trust me when i say this. Thief ISNT FACEROLL its a very high risk high reward class and that is why i like it. If you miss over 1 dodge/blind most likely you will either die or have to run away so both of you reset the fight.
That is how squishy thieves are.
Thank you, seriously. Someone else who played thief and understands how glass cannon they are.
Not all mes run the PU build – my preference for my mesmer is heavy zerker bursts. Even though, I think it’s safe to say that mesmer zerker is much more forgiving than thief zerker. If you mess up on mesmer, you pull out the lockdowns. If you mess up on thief, you – um…cringe?
I have my own personal opinion for D/P that I won’t mention, so no thieves can backstab me here…heh. But I would like to see maybe…more risk in using that leap combo.
