My spill on why thief is not fair
Daily thief QQ post: check.
Ya lets just delete the “thiefs” all together (sarcasm). If you have played since launch and play one yourself….then you should know how to counter them. If you haven’t figured out how to counter them by now….then you probably never will and you should prob just stay in PvE. Enough said
~Glitch
1) When a thief is invis, they gain a huge advantage over others. Sure they are not damaging, however they gain first strike. Basically, if timed well they can catch you when you are completely unprepared and deal huge amount of damage killing you in 3 – 5 seconds.
No other class has this ability, you can even see mesmers approaching you.
Element of surprise is one of the thief’s essential weapons. The best counter, expect it coming. Save stun breaks, save counters, and stay aware of your surroundings.
2) Thiefs have huge healing power. Withdraw is a 15 second heal skill that dodges and heals + many blinks. Unless more then 1 person is shutting down a thief, they are unkillable.
1 on 1 the thief cannot be killed, as they have many escapes on a short cool down.
That insane healing power offsets the glass cannon build of thieves. Without it, a thief dies almost instantly.
3) Thiefs can scout in wvw, you are free to roam into enemy territory, kill yaks and even snipe small groups of players. It is not hard to kill 2 on 1 or even 3 on 1 in wvw vs noob or average guys. It takes much higher skill for other classes to do this.
Arguably, any class can scout WvW. Thieves are just the favored because of their array of escapes from dangerous situations. Thieves are great at scouting, but how much do they assist in zerging? Aside from spamming SB 2 for blast finishers?
4) Thiefs are able to give long ammounts of AOE invis. This gives large groups of players a first strike advantage, which is totally unfair and usually means the group wins. Look at 2v2 5v5 battles that are coordinated with thief.
Long uptime on AOE invis….hm, I can’t counter that argument, aside from saying you have to stay in one spot for a long time to get that.
A small havoc team can benefit, but in larger fights, a mesmer is much better suited to make the group invisible for surprise attacks.
5) The class itself is cheese to play, it’s never been to easy to kill people in spvp, i literally backstab, blackpowder autto and heartseek and almost all class is dead even warrior and gaurdians who are tanks.

I played over 5000 games in spvp and have 4 lvl 80 class which is thief, elementalist, engineer and warrior.
And all these 3 classes should have 0 problems 1v1-ing a thief, if you have played the thief class enough and you have a decent 1v1 build. God, my warrior has never lost 1v1 vs thief.

It’s called situational awareness. Do you know about a button that helps you see behind your back? Because while I roam or even just stand around I use it often. It helps, trust me. And if a thief actually wants to use his shadow refuge just to sneak up on me for 1 backstab, they are welcome.

Riiight, ok, I won’t comment on that, I’ll just say I have 1v2-ed(and killed) thieves quite easily sometimes.

I roam on my warrior nowadays and while I have had situations where I could have lived if I had stealth, everything else I do just as well as when I played thief. Also, 4 days ago I 1v5-ed 2 warriors, 2 staff eles and 1 ranger, all 80, again on my warrior. You were saying?

Thieves are just as essential as guardian in a team comp, because of their mobility though. Not because of their spike potential. If ele still had a 15 recharge second rtl, it would be ele that was required, bcs their team fighting is better than thief.
ANet decided they only wanted thief to be the king of mobility. Reality is they could have made another class the king or multiple classes even if they wanted.
As for the rest of the OP’s complaints, 1) is true of any class. If you are caught with cool-downs or an engi or Mesmer gets the jump on you with stealth, you can go down quickly. It’s not thief exclusive, any profession can get the jump on someone, classes with stealth are able to do so frequently is all.
2) thieves do not have huge healing power. Withdraw is good with evade builds because it Heals more than His over time assuming no Poison, but it doesn’t heal for a lot. 4k is a decent weapon skill critical, when countered with Poison 3k is potentially an auto attack critical.
3) WvW I care nothing about. I’m not sure why you’d be losing 2+v1 against a thief other than bad play. If the complaint is about them running away, they lost. Non issue in my mind. If you’re chasing them, that’s your issue, you’re falling for them baiting you.
4) Mesmer’s and engineers are able to provide AoE invisibility for 5 seconds. The two of them can chain it for 10 seconds to the same number of players as a thief can. Thief SR gives 4 seconds of stationary invisibility then 11 seconds of free roaming stealth. An engi and Mesmer chaining stealth doesn’t require being stationary. “But it requires 2 ppl instead of 1!” So? Those profs have tradeoffs to make up for the extra 6 seconds indivually. Engi is better at contributing to team fights, and Mesmer is too.
5) There is nothing in point 5, it’s just an opinion vs bad play. A bunker won’t die quickly to backstabs, and no one stays in black powder.

I am mainly for preventing thieves from stealthing long enough for their healing skill to recharge If a thief refuges after a withdrawal they will have 20 secs of stealth while their healing skill is only on a 15 sec CD. Their regeneration in stealth is bad enough. This is really what resets a duel. Also, they just stealth for 10 secs to reset the duel a second time.
This applies to wvw and in spvp for capping points specifically if the enemy player is killed by the thief. If a player can be killed by a stealth spamming thief, it wont matter that stealth can’t cap. The thief will just kill the player and take the point after that player is downed.

Guardian is firmly seated in pretty much every team in SPVP,
In dungeons you always want at least one Guardian. In WvW your zerg can never have too many Guardians.
They’re considered as needed for teamplay in this game as Monks were in GW1.

In wvw they may face guards re-spawning while they are capping and that will slow down the capping and you can just run back from spawn. In Wvw you should probably make survival and buying time for backup to arrive a priority anyway, rather then trying to get fair 1v1 fights.

A 20 second refuge means 3 trait points at least down the Shadow Arts line. The shadow arts line is only useful for roaming and a 2v2 or smaller scale skirmish that is not near an objective. It has a very specific strength and is bad otherwise.
3 trait points into SA means you miss out on either damage or utility from Trickery, Critical Strikes, Deadly Arts.
This arguments sounds like a complaint that the game isn’t balanced around WvW roaming, which is intended by the devs. It’s obviously not fun for the majority of the player base to deal with, but the devs aren’t willing to do very much split balancing specifically towards WvW, if they’ve even done any.

Yeah OP is right, thoese 6/6/6/6/6 thiefs are really not fair ….
All you mentioned is right, but no thief build can have all of that and so its balanced .
You can counterplay / skill any other profession( build ) but so can they.
I fought many times vs skilled opponents and there was no way i could kill them ( speaking of sPvP ofc ).
But if i would make 1-2 mistakes i am dead .
This is unique to the thief imho, other professions are much much more forgiving.
Playing against a thief is much about knowing his skills and understanding the time when you can score a hit .
Eg. fighting a NG is such an uphill battle as thief ( with the common speccs ) , and he only ha to hit you 1 time with pistol #3 …
On the other hand, one could also specc absolutly counter NG and stuff, but then again one would be weak vs. other professions.
And regarding you 5) – i don’t really thing you fought ppl who know what they do OR you join fights that are already ongoing , but this is not a thief problem then.
D/P is super predictable and nearly noone does play this in competitive environment…
Here os a solid argument for you.
All classes need to be nerf, every one has blocks invulnerabilitis and massive condition dmg. The thief has not so pls nerf the world. Tks.

What a ridiculous post. A lot of this is what a thief is SUPPOSED to do and a lot of it is serious exaggeration, especially #5. In PvP, which I main a Guardian, I don’t think I’ve ever even died to a thief unless I’m outmanned. What you’re saying is that you just play against bad PvP’ers. All classes face that.

Playing the most does not make you the best in something .. this is true in every aspect of life as well.
I often though for myself how could i deal with profession X / specc Y as class Z .
And as i wrote, you can counter anything if you want to , but what you wrote in your opening post just proves that you most likely don’t understand balance yourself .
What you described is a thief that would run 6/6/6/6/6 while using a D/x S/x and SB …. which is just not possible ….

in order to do that a thief would have to run SR and use it to engage a fight , and for the BIG DMG you are talking about he would need to wield a Dagger mainhand …

Also, if you don’t see the SR i don’t know … watch your surroundings better … Minimap …. and btw. NG can also stealth to get this first attack / pull without interruption.

If you run with WD as heal you need another way to condicleanse, don’t get me wrong WD is nice, but its not HUGE HEALING power … or anything in that direction.
Also you only have access to regen when you run 20+ in Acro or 10+ SA, which noone would chose normally.

This is true for ANY other profession too, you only have to specc for it.
And a D/D thief for example with full zerker burst build is very well killable.
Sure you can run away in most cases ( no true vs warrior + ele imho and perhaps ranger ) – but in sPvP this does not help you at all.

Sure you can scout , run and hide when a bit group is approaching … so what does this give you ?
Every other profession in game can also kill 1,2 or 3 nubs at once if they are nubs and the player knows what he is doing, has the right specc and gear.
And a noob thief will do kitten against 2 or 3 other nubs…

This is the ONLY thing why you would bring a thief, to set up coordinated burst, otherwise ppl would only run around with Guards, Wars and Necs ( oh wait ….. oO )

The class is NOT more cheese to play than any other, and despite of what you might think i can tell you i know MANY ppl who play everything ( or at least 3+ professions ) and do not tuch thief, cause they feel seriously handicapped when playing a thief.
And these are players who, like me, do also have around 3k tourney games …
If you think your team WON / destoyed the other team cause you did land a big backstab and stuff, i can tell you , your would have won with you playing anything else too.
Thief has a uniqe role in tPvP ,. but one has to understand it , and its for sure not cause of the thiefs OP dmg …

When I spoke of capping, I was talking about spvp. Wvw roaming was separate. And if stealth is the issue then the thief will have at least 3 in SA. I am just saying if a thief wants to be immortal without losing the ability to kill an enemy all he has to do is bring enough stealth to reset his fight. However, its only annoying to me. It’s perfectly balanced. For example, many classes can have insane sustain like elementalists, mesmers, or engineers.
The thief’s method of sustain bothers me personally because the player’s have more influence on their deaths based on accidental reveals than the enemy does.
Again, it’s perfectly balanced in my opinion. It’s just annoying enough to see why the OP wanted no stealth.

I thought I would drop this in here. If you watch the ready-up (http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/c/4456907 1 hr, 2 min) they talk about where the thief is currently in terms of its strength, its weaknesses, and its ability to disengage via stealth/mobility.
Right now the thief seems like it’s pretty much exactly where they want it to be.

All the things you listed are purely issues of l2p or general map-awareness. If a thief gets the jump on you and you’re glassy, you’re dead. The same goes for any zerker specs in general though. Stealth in pvp? No one half-competent uses Stealth-based builds outside hotjoin. In WvW stealth builds may be dominant, but they’re also the most predictable thing in the world and real easy to fend off.

As someone who also plays a thief, the class is very easy to kill if you know how to play against them. If we make 1-2 mistakes, we lose. Expert thieves take tons of practice.

I cant see any different between hotjoin and spvp, only that spvp needs longer to join, have a little better rewardand is part of the ranking.
The builds, the playstyle, the 5vs5 fights, the zerging are the same like in hotjoin.

its pretty much the only reliable pvp spec we have left. Once this is destroyed like everything else, thiefs will either die or all run s/d evasion. Oh and then guess what we will evade too much and that will be nerfed too… phucking lol has anyone looked at engineers or guardians lately?

If you want to beat a good thief you’re going to need good reactions times. If you can’t do it then that’s on you.
It’s not like thieves have so much to offer; Going in and out with loads of damage as fast as they can. Take that away and they have nothing.

Thief doesn’t have Invis, Mesmer does. Thief have Stealth. So you don’t need to worry about wanting to remove Invis from them since they don’t have it, unless you’re talking about making Mesmers unable to apply Mass Invisible to Thieves? o.O

Here’s a little help, OP: find some videos of THIEVES fighting other thieves. You’ll notice something.. When they go invisible, we know where they’re going. Because we know the mindset and we can predict their intentions. I know this is a little more obscure of a combat maneuver than a simple skill rotation, but just try to use your brain and ponder on that.

What you’re failing to see is that without stealth, all we have is high mobility and a sword. I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but I didn’t buy guild wars 2 because the Fencer class looked cool.
Here’s a little help, OP: find some videos of THIEVES fighting other thieves. You’ll notice something.. When they go invisible, we know where they’re going. Because we know the mindset and we can predict their intentions. I know this is a little more obscure of a combat maneuver than a simple skill rotation, but just try to use your brain and ponder on that.
Say that to my face and not online and see what happens, getting your friends to message me because you’ve got muscles and your some tough guy. I dont care about whether or not you go to the gym 5x a week, come at me anytime mate

Honestly im sick of ppl like u, thiefs are OP. Get 10 thiefs and roam wvw who can stop you? even 30 people wont beat it. No more invis is what I say
