Need serious help
Hi NemesiS.6749, I main a thief and would like to make some suggestions.
1. Try S/P, it is great for leveling since you get cleave damage and blinds
2. Keep Short bow as a weapon swap this will also allow you to do AoE Damage
3. Time your dodges vs mobs, they have a tell for their high damage skills
4. Build some Toughness and Vitality while learning to play thief as it will make it a less frustrating experience. As you get better and can hold your own replace toughness and vitality gear for more damage gear (In the End you will probably be Zerker- It’s GREAT!!)
5. If you have more questions for me feel free to pm or message me in Game
-Jeep-

well about the build, im just lvl 30 so there isnt much just 10 on power and 10 more on the crit trees. I have been reading sword is bad so that is why i havent try it much, ill go and buy one and see how it goes.
Currently i use D/D and D/P, going to buy a few stuff and see if i survive a little longer. I love the mechanic of the class and all that but so far is the class i had more trouble with, i lvled a mesmer to 80 and even tho they sucked the first few lvls until around 60 it wasnt as bad as this.
There’s a couple reliable paths you can take.
d/d spamming #3 and laying down caltrops will destroy just about any large group you encounter. Caltrops in general is just an amazing ability for DPS (though it has been nerfed a bit). Signet of Malice for your heal works wonders since you are landing TONS of hits per second.
d/p with 10 shadow arts for +2 initiative on stealth. Use #5 for a blind field, when it is about to disappear, use #2 to get stealth, backstab and drop another blindness. This is great single target DPS, and can blind multiple foes
s/p just dropping black powder #5 so you take no damage. Sword swings can hit multiple targets unlike dagger.

use s/d with a sb. with s/d use 5 and auto attack everything. at level 40 I was fighting level 50 mobs and at 65 went to frostgorge and killed all the animals to 74, then made my way south to cursed shore. blind and sword are your friends
I think things are getting a little better. The shortbow seems alright but its damage isnt so good, at least that is what i feel. is pistol/dagger good to use? i kinda like that more but i heard is mostly use for conditions and well once i reach more levels i want to build my thief for power and dmg (i suppose that is what thief do better right?) is it ok to use P/D in a power build?
p/d will work fairly well just constantly stealthing and using sneak attack.
p/d does not work at all in a power build, but until higher levels you can’t specialize very much so don’t worry about it.
As a not so experienced thief (just restarted a thief lately) i’d also suggest to put trait points in “safer” lines, for healing and vitality, at least early in the game.
What i do when i fight groups of mobs (now still only at lvl 28) is: pull them together, drop caltrops, D/D #3 spam, steal (it gives me 3 initiative because of 5point-trait in Trickery traitline), #3 again twice, and mobs are usually almost dead by this time. For their last few millimeters of HP i just wait, or finish them one by one, although usually by the time i’m done with one of them, the others die as well.
At such a low level, instead of 10 into crit and power, try to get 15 into acrobatics as soon as you can. A lot of thief survivabilty comes from dodging the big attacks. Picking up feline grace and using vigorous recovery and withdraw will do wonders for you. Like others have said, there are a couple of paths to 80. I preferred S/P, but I can’t stand condition builds for the most part. Pick up smoke screen while you’re at it. It really helps with mixed melee and ranges mobs.

go for a guardian/warrior
you will thank me later
I used the build that Phenn mentions in this post:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/Leveling-Thief-Build-Weapon-Combos/first#post893684
It is a great build for leveling because you basically can evade most incoming damage. I would start out with the SB and tag a bunch of mobs, let them group up and then switch to d/d and start the death blossom spam. The trick is using your evades to gain swiftness to kite the mobs when you are out of initiative to allow those bleeds to kill them off. Also, don’t forget to use steal. Steal is an amazing ability and should always be used when fighting, especially with this build because it will give you initiative and some boons. With this build I was able to take down veterans and even some champions by myself. Just remember to re-gear about every 10 levels and you will do just fine.
Feel free to add me in-game if you have any questions.
