Nerfbat will create more "OP" claims
I am nearly unbeatable without HS so this is true.
So you are saying since something that was OP was nerfed that the more OP build will come to light. Isn’t that a good thing? Thieves are in line for a series of nerfs. In sPvP they are now making up over 50% of the average game.
What’s that? Thieves have a niche? Must be OP.
Two staff Eles can destroy an entire zerg in WvW. They’re not OP, they’re just capable AoE casters. Similarly thieves are strong in 1v1 or 1v2 especially versus people who don’t know how to fight them.
My ranger buddy has gotten caught by plenty of thieves in WvW. What does he do? He kills them. In sPvP he can kill thieves provided he has his skills out for them.
TL;DR : Paper calls scissors OP. Nerf pls.

I can’t tell if you’re really bad at analogies or if you think it’s fair for one class to be completely unbeatable in any given situation against other classes o.o
No, this is a mistaken mindset that has been there since WoW was pejoratively called World of Roguecraft.
There is a belief that a thief/rogue should explode any class in 1v1.

I’m just hoping this nerf will make some thieves switch characters. I’m already sick of being on spvp teams with 5 thieves, 4 rangers, and a random assortment of the remaining classes.
OP – That was exactly the issue. Thieves weren’t having to use any skill. Hit 2 repeatedly until target was dead. The player base doesn’t mind getting beaten by someone who plays like a pro. What they don’t like is no skill mechanics that allow the vast majority of the player base to rerole a thief just for sPVP and instantly start racking up kills.
The adjustment – and it was an adjustment – was a fair one. The ability is still usable as a gap closer and still hurts like hell in that last 25% – which is where it is supposed to be used. As Zipper above me has said. SPVP is dominated by thieves and warriors.
Thief is purely a single target burst class. Daggers, the highest damage for thief, have absolutely no AoE aside from Dancing Dagger. Fighting a 1v1 vs. a thief is, in fact, fighting a thief on his terms.
The only reason thieves are seemingly destroying others in PvP is that EVERYONE is building glass cannon. No one is building defensive. No one is building for a sustained 1v1 battle. They’re all building for as much damage as possible in as little time as possible. And guess what? When a class is made to do that already in the shortest time possible, that class is going to have a field day when there’s no one who’s building to counter it. In our current meta, and mixed with how easy it is to obtain Power, Precision, and Critical Damage together, people are not trying to defeat thieves. They’re just trying to deal massive damage.
Also, as stated by Arenanet themselves, please start trying to counter something before calling it OP. Thief has an insane amount of counters that it’s not even funny. Hell, a well-played mesmer can easily kill a thief if they aren’t stupid.
sPVP is still new, and classes that are pubstompers will definitely do it best during a new game. Warriors and Thieves are those pubstompers. If people would stop building to be as squishy as possible to deal as much damage as possible, then maybe they’d stop dying to an assassin or burst melee class. I can’t believe people expect the game to be nerfed to their playstyle rather than them adapt to what’s beating them, and work to counter it.
In other words, thief isn’t OP. He’s working as intended. And as for people claiming thief is so overplayed, please take a look at this, once again provided by Arenanet: https://d2vn94glaxzkz3.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Gender-Profession-Race-Crafting-Graph-590x378.jpg
I just hope Arenanet doesn’t cater to the complaints and start nerfing classes based on what’s complained about most.

Play a thief, they’re PAPER THIN. Honestly, if you’re not playing a burster who sits on the sides of the fight until he can jump in→nuke someone→and get out you’re playing the class wrong. Thiefs can’t participate in regular pitched battles unless they play like this because splash damage alone wrecks them.
My only issue with the thief is pistol whip. Not only does the thief snare you it also stuns, and does massive damage. It’s basically a better form of 100 blades which is already stupid overpowered.

it stuns you for half a second. it immobilizes the thief for the full duration. Are you REALLY complaining about this?

I do play a thief, and using a fraction of my skills (I just rolled one so I am still learning), I am doing fairly well.
They are paper thin. If I get initiated on (can’t dodge a warrior charge or can’t stealth in to a ranger), I do get wrecked. That said, the entire class is designed around being able to get out (with huge movespeed, stealths, gap closers that can be used to jump farther out of range).
More over, the thief contributes by being able to back cap better than any single class in the game.
Finally, don’t act like thieves are the only paper thin class. Try a necro spec’d for any damage. Try an ele. Try a mesmer (who has to rely on ridiculously easy to spot fakes). They are all easy to melt (especially for a thief!).
The only two classes I find that I am better off not engaging 1v1 are guardian’s and engies… and if I do try to 1v1 them, I just disengage (since the thief has that as an option).

Devourer venom keeps you there for two seconds. The half second stun on pistol whip is just a nice bonus to make sure you stop them from casting any escape spells.

A thief can spec to be just as survivable as a guardian. Calling a thief paper thin because you only spec yours that was is a bit short sighted.
Any class can be built for survivability. That doesn’t mean you can’t say one is paper thin, especially built the way all thieves are built right now. Thieves not only are tied for the least HP (10,805) with Guardians, they also wear medium armor. Due to the fact that armor isn’t as noticeable as vitality/HP, thief is actually the innately squishiest class in the game.
Also, necro is far from “squishy” even when built for damage. Necro has 18k base HP – tied for the highest in the game with warriors.
Any class can be built to be glass and I wasn’t saying they can’t be paper thin. I was responding to the guy who said thieves can only participate by standing on the outside. It simply isn’t true.
Thieves defense is based on things other than pure health and when built for it they are incredibly survivable.
But ‘paper thin’ thieves have more survivability than other ‘paper thin’ specs what with stealth, spammable gap closers/distancers, etc.
Thieves (in zerg v zerg) get to spec high damage/paper thin and get away with it. This is part of the problem. Their damage trade off is low.
Try the scholar classes and put 0 points in toughness or health. Your jaw will drop at how fast you get blown up.
I freely admit that some of my dislike for thieves was part “grass is always greener” complex.
That said, after playing thief coming from primarily a necro, I am convinced that other classes need some serious buffs or a few classes (including thieves) need some slight nerfs.
This game is pretty balanced in terms of classes. Just because you get stomped by something doesn’t mean it’s OP. Also, a ranged caster class can be built for glass cannon and still do well. You just can’t face tank melee champs. You have to kite. You have to sit back and do your DPS while the enemy team is distracted by melee classes. People don’t build to counter something, so suddenly anything that counters their build is OP and needs a nerf. An assassin class will always counter glass cannons. That’s what they’re made to do.
