Q:
New Thief with questions
You’ll generally get different weapons from monster drops as you level up. By level 15ish you should pretty much have 2 daggers, 2 pistols, a sword and shortbow. At level 7 you get the ability to have a second weapon set and weapon swap so be sure to use dual pistols or a shortbow in your second weapon set for range.

Yep pretty much play the game you can get weapons also find a merchant you can buy some white ones of the level you need.
Personal preferance to range, shortbow, it really is the range all weapon with haveing a decent power auto attack gets op in fighting groups of 2 and has some really neat utility to it far more that P/p will be.
Mobs will drop weapons. You can also get them from Karma vendors, just make sure to check the heart guy after you finish the event to see what he has. The best weapons you will get at early levels will probably come from story missions.
Crafting is also a good way to get the exact weapons you want as soon as you want them to keep up with your level. Personally I would go weaponsmith for daggers and swords. You can do hunstman to make pistols and shortbows, but in my experience they are the more common drops so you wont be as hard pressed to find those.
Dont forget your karma vendors! Everyone over looks those and they are a good source for armor and weapons when you find yourself in need of a quick/cheap upgrade.

In addition to my previous post, if you keep up to date with your personal story and persist with exploring areas then you shouldn’t ever have to buy anoher piece of armour or weaponry from any vendor or the Trading Post. Any item you get will almost always be bwtter than one you got from a drop.

To be perfectly honest, Dagger + Pistol is amazing for solo leveling.
Black Powder + Heartseeker = Damage + Stealth for a Backstab combo.
Not to mention if you’re the Smoke field reapplies Blind every second for 4 seconds.
It’s effectively the Thief’s version of a shield in PvE.
Granted, if dagger isn’t your style the trading post usually has some decently priced weapons if you want to try a different playstyle.
I went 1-80 with D/P and loved it the whole way.

Hey, thanks for all the replies!
I found a better pistol in a drop.
So, basically drops alone should keep me geared ok?
I may very well prefer dagger/pistol or pistol/dagger to other weapon sets… I am just too new to know. Last night I switch to pistol in main. I am now lvl 6…but my character info says “effective level 5”. I assume is this due to my gear.
So simply by continuing to explore and defeat enemies and do quests, I can be geared OK?

“Effective Level” means you’re in an area that’s lower level than you are- explore a little further from where you are and you should find an uncompleted “Heart Quest” that should be around level 6. In the top right of your screen you’ll see the level of the Heart Quest in “(_)” near the name of the quest.
Keep exploring, and welcome to the Thieves Guild ;D

Yup, exploring and doing your personal story should pretty much keep you equipped to your level.
As for weapon sets, don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations and strategies. One of the easiest combinations to level with is Sword/Pistol and Shortbow with Signet of Malice; I couldn’t recommend them enough.

If you want to experiment with your character you should go to structure pvp.
It’s the cross-swords icon at the top of your game. Near the World Vs. World icon.
Click on it and then click the “Heart of Mists” button.
You will port to area where you are level 80 and you can buy weapons from merchants for free and test them out in pvp or against dummy NPCs.
Keep stumbling and enjoy the ride, there’s no pressure, go with what you find, equip them in different combinations. like pistol + dagger, dagger + pistol, sword + pistol etc. Get a feel for all the weapons and combinations and unlock their skills while playing.
I definitely suggest trying all combos out not only to unlock all their skills but to find what works best for your play style.
I tried them all and love D/D & P/P but I do mix in the P/D sometimes but D/D is my one true love.
