New theif player, Help with weapons,
pve or pvp or both? Whatever you do, at least take a shortbow with you, dont have to use it, but you might want to at some point. Im not a big fan of the weapons look either, but infiltrators arrow makes up for a lot of things. Lets just say: you are totally not forced to use a bow, but there is a reason most of us love it.
Anyways: Ive had some fun in pvp with Sword/Dagger+ Pistol/Pistol. S/d as defensive toolset and p/p for burst.
Staff might be worth a look, in general a good weapon, also featuring the melee dps and sustain p/p might lack.
The ‘coolest’ option would be d/d, in pve totally doable, since you dont want anything but autoattack. However not viable in pvp due to requiring condidamage, which does not work for p/p.
I just guess everything with a pistol is not to be considered since you already got two of ’em, but d/p is the first choice of most thieves.

Depends heavily on how you play P/P. Unload spam, you’re probably best off running shortbow or S/D for disengage potential and control. S/D sets up combos via IS/IR to allow for a cheap initiative disengage after getting in and firing off your burst, shortbow gives you better in-combat sustain and utility.

I disagree that P/P is incompatible with condi. Try building around using Head Shot and the interrupt-torment trait. Add in some stealth options for sneak attack. Maybe a hybrid build would be a decent choice given the synergy across the pistol skills.
D/D or D/P are both options for hybrid because they offer dagger attacks which you can trait for poison and D/D has bleed-evades. The lack of teleport may be difficult given the class, but there is no reason not to give it a try and see you like it.
Hey! Another new player that loves the thief class!
As it happens, I run d/p as my primary with p/p for range. I don’t like the shortbow either.
The main draw of d/p is shadow shot. It does high damage, applies blind, and shadowsteps to the target from range for only 4 initiative. But the weapon set also provides area pulse blind with black powder, which is more useful for a melee set than it is for p/p. And you can combo for stealth with heartseeker. Headshot is great for pulmonary impact procs, too. Your AA is quite strong, too.
Here’s the build I run for the moment. I’m still working on masteries in HoT, so this build is basically for handling whatever the jungle wants to throw at me. But I think the damage seems great, decent cc, endurance for days, fantastic mobility, full uptime fury and swiftness, and great self-healing, too!
For PVE, pretty much anything is fine, as long as it keeps you from getting killed most of the time. I wouldn’t enter PvP without a shortbow, people would probably start calling me names. And besides, for mobility, SB is king.
Sonya for females. (necro,rev,ranger,mes,engi)
All classes lvl 80.
Well, many people start calling names when you don’t use a SB, including in PvE. Screw them. I’ve switched to P/P and I don’t regret it at all. Sure, sure Infiltrator Arrow is cool, but heck, P/P #5 + Bound is kinda cool too.
But to answer the OP’s question… I’m assuming he’s made a new toon and he’s currently leveling it the old way, in which case… I would suggest a sword, and a staff when he becomes a Daredevil, simply because those trash mobs should get the AoE they deserve.
I get that P/P looks cooler – I was using P/P at first too (D/D being my main set) – but SB has got a lot of utility I wouldn’t want to miss.
In fact all my 5 thieves are running with all weapons thief has got (minus staff, only my main has got one) – be prepared to use/make use of all weapons thief has got.
That being said: P/P is single target damage – someone suggested taking S/P as a second set and that would deal with multiple mobs at once – the better options than that are Staff and SB. But you can also do that with D/D and deathblossom but that requires a bit more skill/patience – just try what you like better.
Btw: I got used to love my SB – doesn’t really matter if it hasn’t got the 21 century idea of a thief.
