New thief - Care to explain some stuff? :)
Is there any mechanics i should know about when playing a thief?
Hey
Im a new started player and i have some difficulty understanding some mechanics of this game.
First of, could someone explain what S/D, S/P, D/D, D/P specs is and what it means for my playstyle?
Any sword build is more tactical, while dagger-main builds are more burst. So if your playstyle match any of those, then that’s your build.
What should i use while leveling?
P/P — if you like the thrill of risking your behind, go D/D or D/P.
Also, skill system. When i reach lvl 10, will all of the weapons different skills be unlocked for me, or do i need to use them to get ranks (like in Elder Scrolls Online) in order to unlock more skills?
Ever since ArenaNet add the New Player Experience (NPE), I no longer know how things works. Before NPE, you are only allowed to use main hand weapon up to a certain level where you unlock your off-hand slot, then weapon swapping, etc. In other words, it’s not like ESO.
Lastly, how “kittened” are thiefs in PvP and WvW? They are quite hard to play efficiently i heard, how come? They are fragile i guess but is that it?
Thief requires timing, thus they require practice. They are not hard to play, just hard to master. When all else fail, you can always spam Heartseeker for the win.

Master stealth, shadowstep, dodging and evading. Learn to budget your initiative and when to burn them all out. Keep an eye out about your surroundings and know where to position yourself — in other words, don’t stand in the fire.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
Wouldn’t S/P be more recommended for PvE/lvl’ing since the sword has an inherit (better) cleave and the pistol offhand provides black powder, so you can face-tank melee mobs.
I remember when I lvl’ed I would just switch between weapon sets when I would get bored of one. Eh.

When you hit (I think it’s level 22 now), you will be able to join the sPvP lobby where your character will be level 80 with (almost) all traits and skills available. This is the best way to try out different weapon sets and specs.
I will also mention this: if you don’t like leveling and you don’t mind spending some money you can follow crafting guides and just buy all the mats. Ever prof. you get to level 400 is worth 10 levels (unless they changed this).

Thieves are hard to play because they lose to most classes 1v1 and because almost all effective builds use low (read non-existant) defensive stats so that their mistakes are met with almost instant death.
In WvW you will be at a significant gear disadvantage for a very long time and you will need to zerg (very boring for a thief) for a few months to be able to get buff stacks from killing guards. This will compound against the fact that most specs are simply better than you. I would suggest not rolling a thief as a first class if you are interested in WvW.
Try this, I attempted to explain the specs as best I could. Hope it helps
