New thief elite: Assassinate
way too situational, way too PvP centric, useless in most situations, even when it can be used (dpsing the body is probably better as it damages the rezzer too). also pretty unfair in the few situations it could be used effectively, since it’s denying the chance of second wind that is pretty core to the GW2 combat.
It is either completely right or totally wrong but your idea is very innovation LOL.
+1

Since it would be a single target/targeted skill, a counter could be to quickly stealth the target, so it wouldn’t 100% deny second wind. How confident would thieves be in swapping basilisk venom (the core elite in most meta builds) for something like this?
IMO elites should bend the rules of GW2 combat and feel powerful. Would it be THAT powerful though?
Say the Warrior’s War Banner for instance. It has cast time, rallies multiple players in a targeted area. In a way by doing this you are bending some GW2 Combat rules, you’re bypassing a normal rally, bypassing the need to rez slowly, and avoiding any of your teammates to get cleaved in the process. But just like that is a defensive/supportive warrior’s elite, why cant the alpha predator class of GW2 have a single target assassinate elite that can just as much bend rules too but in an offensive way?

Skill Name: Assassinate
Description: Instantly stomps the opponent.
Cast time: 1s?
Cooldown: 120s?I believe it fits the class and could be a potential elite that makes thieves a big threat in teamfights.
Would you replace basilisk venom for a skill like this?
Would pick it in a heart beat. Remove the cast time though.

thieves bring basilisk venom because we don’t have particularly good elites and basi venom is on a low CD.
and your warbanner example, warbanner can be used in all game modes, since its primary function is help other allies. stomping is only a thing in PvP modes, and only small scale teamfights would benefit from it (and only when you have a super tanky guard rezzing the guy and no CC).
plus, you said it yourself, the skill would be an instant stomp. how do you counter something that’s instant? do you now require a thief with SR or a mes with mass invisibility just to prevent the possibility of an instant KO?

Maybe you shouldn’t get downed in the first place?
I would love a skill like this though. Cast time of 1s is reasonable, and the high CD (which I would set at 150s though) would make it interruptable, predictable but, at the same time, rewarding.
Players would still complain, but it’s something that would change the role of many players.
Also, a Ranger with Spirit of Nature or a Warrior Warbanner, if used properly (IE: people actually communicating to each other) could totally counter this skill.

as if “don’t get downed, ever” was totally an option.
and with a 1s cast time, you might as well just go for a stomp. no ludicrous cooldown, and it lets you keep basilisk venom (or thieves guild, if you’re more of a gang up guy)

What does this skill offer PvE players?
Make it an instant cast AoE stomp, thieves are back in the wvw meta.

What would be the benefit of a 1 sec stomp if you can just press f? If it would be instant, i would agree, because then there is an advantage to the elite over a regular stomp. I would make it a ground target skill (the size of the blink target field, so you need to target well) at maybe 600 range but instant (or 1/4 sec). On high cooldown it would not be op, since thief are able to safe stomp in 1v1 anyway. It would only provide thief the possibility to stomp in big team fights with AOE flying in all directions. Then again, i would rather see a damage mitigation skill as our elite than a superstomp.
I think Thief is assassinate enough in pvp.
for Nec, War, Ran
pop stealth… stomp
pop BP…. stomp
for Thief
follow Steal
for GD (my fev)
start Stomp animation… Shadow step away…. Shadow return at the end of animation.
still cant figure it out about Ele and Mes though
This idea is a giant fail because it’s PvP-centric. The answer is no.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald

You do have a choice to choose between different elites. PvP/PVE centric elites shouldn’t be an issue if it enhances that respective game mode in an ejoyable, fun or competitive way. Besides, it can have some sort of modification of how it would work in PvE, or simply adding a PvE centric elite that wouldn’t work in PVP to compensate. Yes, i’m aware that it could open a gate that would complicate their core “we don’t design for each game mode independently” design philosophy. But hey, stomping IS an important part of the game which could get some spicing up too.
9/10 would run. Nobody likes down state.
Ground target is good/bad. Means u could precast it in some cases but thief/mesmer might teleport away randomly. Targeted skills land in stealth anyway if you were already casting them so w/e.
Anyway skill is too strong for anet and they don’t want professions to have anything terribly unique so it won’t happen.

I would like to add that I do like the system of down state, this skill is not trying to replace that at all. Just enhancing a layer to a system which adds a chance of threat to a situation, and a new possibility to a high risk/high reward class.
High risk: give up basilisk venom (easier kills), best targets to apply this to would be bunker guardians which generally are in dangerous high damage zones, long downtime if missed/used incorrectly.
High reward: Quick rally on a teammate/teammates (if done quickly you can beat a stomp in the process), quick decap, taking the bunker out of the equation.
still cant figure it out about Ele and Mes though
Mes is easy, there #2 makes a clone, however any clone generating ability needs a target to cast. So if you stealth stomp a mes they literally can’t do anything. Ele always take 2 tries.
@OP, i really like the edited skill
WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO HAVE THIS IN PVE!!!

Modified version
Skill Name: Mark of Assassination
Description: Places a mark on your opponent, if the target dies while the mark is still active, it will bypass the downed state.
Duration: 5 seconds
Cast time: Instant
Cooldown: 150s?
Range: 600-900, must have LoS.
*Has no effect if used after the target is downed.
i dont think Anet would ever add a skill that only works in X game mode
you can already stomp in 1 second with quickness.
its on a much shorter cd too.
the only thing that makes this suggestion appealing is how bad the other thief elites are, while in comparison, quickness is far more useful but often not taken because other utility skills provide equal or greater value.
other things that need to be considered, what is the counter play to a thief using this skill? can we clear it with condi removal? if the skill cant be dispelled somehow, how do you fight against it? even if it could be, if its instant he’s only going to pop it when he knows youre a heartseeker away from death, that hardly leaves time for condi cleansing and invulns have probably already been blown.
as is, too strong.
Celestial Avatar is like an old man: Takes forever to get up and is spent in 4 seconds
(edited by Raven.9603)
Modified version, with PvE and support utility, modified to be more thiefly and less ninja-like (while still being useful for ninjas)
The idea here is a quicker cooldown elite with significant drawbacks for failure, encouraging counterplay while rewarding successful use. In addition, it makes a fantastic support ability for PvE, where thief lacks a lot of party utility.
Morbid Wager (trick)
Description: Places a mark on your target, if the target dies while the mark is still active, you and up to 4 allies near your target are encouraged by the success, gaining quickness for ten seconds. If the target is alive when the wager expires, you become embarassed, losing all initiative and becoming dazed and revealed for 5 seconds. Targets who die under the effects of this ability do not enter a downed state if they normally would.
Duration: 5 seconds
Cast time: Instant
Cooldown: 60s
Range: 600-900, must have LoS.
*Has no effect if used after the target is downed.

You can’t have an ally around you, or a rock dog or something, because then they have a target to cast the clone on

thx man. that’s new
i would like a useful actual assassination ult. i play glass cannon build so i dont really use conditions and basilisk venom just doesn’t really do it for me. so the death mark could work with may be a dmg increase (like power signet active) or evan just some thing with burst dmg

Mesmers don’t need a target to cast their downed invisibility skill. They will always teleport even if you are stealthed and the only one around.

They balance around sPvP. Unless you want to see us nerfed to the ground, the answer is still no. Because I guarantee we’d get heavily nerfed if this skill was created.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
Why is everyone having a hissy fit because it doesn’t do much in PvE? LOADS of skills aren’t useful in PvE at the moment across all classes. Some stuff works better in different modes, that’s just natural. Why do you even need a new PvE elite? DS is brokenly strong and TG is a nice DPS increase for bosses. PvE Thieves are SPOILED. In fact, 99.9999% of post-launch support has been PvE-focused. Stop whining when something useful for another mode appears once in a while.
I would LOVE this elite.
Resident Thief

Mystfire Wolf = PVE onlyYour opinion has been debunked good sirs
and that’s why they all suck and never see any balance, so that they wouldn’t see any decent use on, say, WvW.

They actually do, and i encourage you to test this to see for yourself. However there has to be absolutely NOTHING within targeting distance of the mesmer. This includes rock dogs, parrots, mobs, gates, walls, etc. the mesmer also doesn’t have to target these things, of something is within targeting distance the game will automatically summon the clone
Nooooooooooooo.
I kind of like the idea.
The only problem I see is that means I can only do an instant stomp once ever 12 players I kill…
I would 100% use this over BV in pvp

Guard haves a ranged revive so why not give a thief ranged stomp? With same duration but ranged?

I thought that was Shadowstep.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
How about instead…
Marked For Death : Your next attack will immediately kill someone if it would have put them in a downed state. 8 second active 1/2 activate time 40 second cool down.
With all the invulns in combination with dodging, it would be fun and yet not to powerful. i fyou miss the attack then your done.
Make it 40s so it will have the quickest elite cool down and be handy for elite proc abilties, tie it to one of our existing categories of skills for the skill type buff. Probably Signet.
