Hey! I recently started playing thief and I’m looking for good guides/videos/tips, pretty much anything. I have only played PvE and a bit of hot join PvP with it and I really enjoy it. I have played this game 1.5k hours atm so I do “know the basics”. Planning on mainly focusing on PvP/Wvw roaming and some PvE farming.

Awesome, this will be a bit of a long reply. I can tell you more when I get on next. But first I highly recommend getting your thief to 80, so you can get the major mechanics of it. If your looking for some great videos look up face art of thief volume 1, and caed. I’m not crazy sure if d/p is still top PvP but my guess is it still is the moves are way to useful interrupt/blind/tele/invis whenever/great power with dagger/ and a leap finished that screws stuff up when your targets low. My number one tip is practice practice practice, it will be very disuraging but just keep your head up because it will very rewarding. IMO I prefer s/d with the panic strike and with dare devil, s/d is crazy fast paced and out play ability. Next tip is know your place in PvP, each weapon set has its own place, but most of all your job is to roam/poke/finish/res/burst down the biggest threats of your playing with a good group they will target people for you guys to put your focus on. Use your bow to your advantage your two does good damage, your 4 I think is great for stopping other people from reading as effectively and walking effectively and use your bow 5 to you help your mobitly to decap far or to keep pressure on mid and home.

Let me be the first to say the best thing to do is to log that class right out and roll a DH, Scrapper or some other more effective class. The thief is a hard road to travel when every other class around you excels beyond this class’s capability.

If that doesn’t intimidate you and you want to proceed, welcome to the club. The best suggestion I can give is to get to Dare Devil as fast as possible.

Part of being a Thief is having as much control as possible over your fragile hedgehog:
-Hotkey everything within insta-press range.
-Never stop moving. Make it an unhealthy ADHD obsession to never stop moving nomatter what. Even at birthday parties, race around in circles and random directions constantly. Use every skill while moving. Even switch between holding W, to holding M1+M2 down or hitting autorun off and on with M3. Whatever it takes to never stop. Be like Jason Statham in Crank. Nonstop adrenaline or die.
-Use a dodge key that can be pressed easily, like ctrl or extra mouse button. Double Tap dodge is a sin.
-Learn to play at max camera rotation speed if you haven’t.
-Melee Attack Assist is evil, turn it off if it isn’t.
-Ground Target- Fast with Range Indicator + Lock at maximum range makes Shortbow moistening.
-Have an easy way to drop target like clicking the ground. Quickly dropping target and using Heartseeker to build distance or go into stealth in black powder will save you a lot.
-Keep Calm and Praise the Sun press skills when you need them and avoid spamming them like those dagger Teefs who mash Heartseeker nonstop and die wasting their ini on nothing.

That’s all of the most important Teef starter basics I can think of for meow. You probably have to enroll at the Dojo for deeper hands on stuff.

Pretty good advices from Doggie. I can’t stress enough how both changing his dodge hotkey (mine is the space bar – I use CTRL + space to jump) and increasing the camera rotation speed is important (especially with bounding dodgers: you’re gonna spend your time bounding above your enemy, you must then turn your camera around as fast as possible).

However, could you elaborate on this one?

-Melee Attack Assist is evil, turn it off if it isn’t.

I would also add a few things:

- Unlike most other classes, don’t try to go full zerk if you don’t feel comfortable with it (aka if you’re too often down). Thieves have the lowest hp pool, and a pretty bad armor. Using Marauder pieces is perfectly fine.

- Stay away from metabattle, or from people who pretend knowing everything about the class and give you builds, only to explain to you thieves suck a few minutes later.

- Try every weapon set, not just the FOTM. They’re all different, they all have their pros and cons, make up your own mind.

Melee Attack Assist is an option that makes your character collide with other players like they’re a solid object. Basically adds an unnecessary wall that may hinder your Sonic gottagofast powers. Turning it off lets you~ for example; Cloak and Dagger an enemy in the face and run through them and 180° Backstab. The collision detection always annoyed me so I’ve never played with it on after discovering it.

I love my thief but I’ll give it to you straight. This class is the bottom of the barrel, the scum between your toes and the last person picked in a pick up basketball game. This class just out right sucks. There is nothing good this class gives you. In PvP you hit like a wet noodle and your as tough as wet paper. You’ll be flamed for even thinking about picking this class in PvP. In PvE, it gets worse, no one wants you for raids. You provide no utility at all to other players and your still as tough as wet tissue paper.

I mained thief since day 1 and it’s sad that this class is utter crap. Good luck and Godspeed.

Well at least I’ve had more success on my thief than my warrior! Definitely not the best class for pvp in the current meta but I’m doing really well in emerald atm. Just finished my map completion today and it was quite fun to do with thief due to the mobility.

Still can’t handle anything above camp traps and AA skill level cancer hunters or scrappers. But at least in my noob level games I’m doing better than most of my team mates.

Most of reapers aren’t that great at my pvp matches and I can win them in 1v1’s but I can see that if they’d just play well i shouldn’t event bother 1v1 on them.

Thanks for everyone on their reply’s.

Ps. Just finished Incinerator for my thief, there’s no turning back.

I’m also a new player and thief appealed to me enough that it was my first character to 80. So it’s definitely disappointing to hear from established players that, even after a bit of buffing, the class is still bottom of the barrel in PvE and PvP. I hope there’s more to this story!

At least for now I’m working mostly on solo content it hasn’t been a problem. The class is fun and I don’t feel like I have much trouble just running around in the jungle doing events and completing mastery/hero point challenges. But according to this, I don’t have much to look forward to when I’m ready for group content.

That’s not completely true. I don’t know about PvE, but thief is perfectly playable in pvp if you don’t intend to participate in tournaments. Mesmer and warrior are worse off if you ask me. It’s still the best profession for decapping, and with the Mirror Blade nerf and Fist Flurry or Impact Strike, it’s now the best profession for insta-killing people, which makes thief strong in a team where your allies are mostly scrappers, necros and druids (not to much team fight)
