Hey,

I’m new to the whole Guild wars game as I’ve never even played the first one but what made me really want to start Guild Wars 2 is that I have heard amazing reviews about it and how everyone finds it an amazing game. On top of that, I’m actually quite a big fan of MMOs myself and have always took an interest in it. In all if not majority of the mmos I’ve played, I have always went / played a rogue ( thief in this matter ).

I like being in stealth and able to sneak up to my opponents when they aren’t able to see me or know I’m there. Then as I open up I do Crit upon Crit upon Crit with stuns or any sort of CCs ( crowd control ) that is built within being a thief as I level up. I mainly aim for a 1 v 1 sort of thing or just able to do soo much damage that by the time I finish my combo or rotation of skills, my enemy would be really low on health for me to finish off or for my team mate to just kill. I also preferred to use dual wield daggers and not really cross bows or whatever from some other posts I’ve read. I’m not a WoW clone or whatever but this is mainly what my play style is like and what a lot of rogue / thief are like in many other mmos ( not same but similar ) that I’ve played through time and also playing a rogue as main in WoW as well, Im NOW looking at GW2 in a TOTALLY new and different way with an open and new mind set and not looking it as another WoW or whatever cause that is just stupid. I want to enjoy the game as itself and be able to experience what Guild Wars really have to offer that everyone have been so highly speaking about.

During the meta of the game, Early levels I tend to be a PvE player since I use this stage mainly to get gold and farm ect ect for better weapons and gear for my character. As I hit higher levels I move onto being more of a PvP player so which background of the thief should I go??

Should I just stick to a PvP background throughout ( not sure even which ) and work with that or stick with a PvE throughout ( not sure which again ) and change my build towards later levels to have half pve with pvp or to a full on PvP build?

Please just take it easy…..like I said…..I’ve never played Guild Wars before so I have no idea what sort of things are to come in the game but just know its an AMAZING game!

Thanks!

Thief isnt your traditional stealth class, no single stealth skill lasts longer than 3 seconds untraited. really, there are a couple of exceptions but thats the general rule

I’m unsure of what your asking, your approach to MMOs seems very heavily leaning towards the WoW rogue. In fact I may guess that it was your first proper MMO?

Thief doesnt work like a WoW rogue at all really, in fact thief doesnt have a lot in the way of crowd control. It has immobilize (root’s), snares, daze (silence), and blind (next attack misses) and thats your lot. The thief has 1 stun which is a 1 second cast and stuns for 1 second(such a bad skill), it doesn’t have a knockdown, or any of the cc you might be used to, the thief class relys on agility to survive NOT stealth and not cc

level all the way using what you call a PvE build I would suggest, many people dont really like the PvP in GW2 especially GW1 vets although there are exceptions. Thiefs are also not a great option in WvW apart from for dagger storm and stealing from warriors….

I Hate to burst your bubble, but due to ANets customer service, or lack thereof and lack of true end game content, the player base has already taken a noticeable dip, also the games story in many peoples opinion is pretty terrible due to the main character you follow (Trehearne) being the most uninspiring hero in any game ever.

tl;dr.. play and work things out for yourself, but do yourself a favor and level with sword pistol, it will save you a massive ball ache
