Hello! So I have always been interested in PvP/WvW fights but mostly PvP.
I usually main a mesmer in PvP and a warrior, but I’m really perplexed about a thief- at least in PvP, I am getting that Thief isn’t necessarily noob friendly in PvP- but most classes can be like that I guess.. at least for me.
I actually asked another thief in game for some tips because I wasn’t sure on what to use for a beginner and got negative feedback- and anyone else would just say Dagger Pistol heartseeker spam. That doesn’t help me learn the class in a competitive element, I do prefer Dagger Dagger as my main hand weapons, and either shortbow for secondary or sword pistol – which is what i mostly use in PvE and dungeons, (D/D S/P) Unless it’s TA which I switch to shortbow for the blossoms.
I have looked up builds but most I find are out of date, or do not share equipment etc. But in all they look fun- but I don’t know what play style would suit me- because I don’t want to be the best thief but I do want to be a good and effective thief.

Any help?! <33

Check out Sizer’s Twitch channel, he is probably the best PvP thief around, you can surely learn something from him.

Avoid Dagger Dagger if you want to be a “good and effective” thief.
There are 3 viable PvP builds for thief.

Thief is not “noob friendly” because you not only need to be good at fighting, but also at evaluating the battle and the whole match. Warrior, for example, only requires to be good at battle (and it’s way more forgiving at that), because he is a sitting duck and you can do well just camping a point, staying alive and spamming AoEs.
A thief, on the other hand, needs to pick weakened or glass targets, kill them fast, then help with rezzing/stomping/interrupting/debuffing, and finally needs to know where he is needed most, where the enemy is located, when to disengage and all this stuff.

AH thank you so much!
Ill be taking a serious look at those builds, also your advice literally could not have been more clear.
Maybe I should’ve also asked about WvW would any of those builds be decent in WvW?

They would all be decent and good players can make them all work, but if you’re just starting out I would suggest something with more survival and condiclear, as you’re going to be outnumbered more often.

The most common and easiest wvw build to play is something like this:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fZAQNAoaVlsMpzpdPx0J8PNBNBt9EGeI4uGlYGaFAA-TVRLgAvK/Y2fAQfQk6P+KBJFQEjBA-w

Runes are expensive, you can replace them with runes of the pack, or some other good +power rune(maybe hoelbrak, but not sure, I use pack myself). Traveler runes are also an option.

You can exchange some trinkets for cavalier if you’re feeling squishy, but you shouldn’t have to, as all the blinds and stealth and regen should be enough. Fleet of foot or power of inertia(VI and II in acrobatics) are also an option, replacing mug, with power of inertia being pretty decent if you have strength runes.

If you want to play dagger dagger in wvw, the same build can work replacing V in shadow arts with VI. It’s a bit harder to play tho.

And for the love of god don’t bring this build to tPvP.
