Honestly, D/P is not a good combo IMO but I would say that P/D is better. But if you want to my honest opinion: I would say go D/D or P/P

For PvE, play the weapon set you find most fun (D/D + S/X for me). For PvP, figure out the play style you like best and choose between: Shortbow + (D/P or S/D).
WvW, all weapon combinations are viable. Take mostly zerker weapons/trinkets and add in vit so you have ~16k HP (before adding traits).

I have only google around a bit and D/P use to be the kitten according to old videos I found, some youtube stuff on people getting one shorted.
I’ve played rogue in wow for 10 years so that’s why this class is appealing. But maybe it is as you say personal preference what wp to use.

I was hoping for a standard cookie cutter armor setup that could work for pvp,wvw and pve so I could save some gold. I have not even decided if should go the crit route or something ells.

For PvP you don’t have to spend anything on armor, it’s purely cosmetical and your stats come from the PvP amulet (however WvW is not a part of the Pvp system). If you need more info about PvP gear use this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvWB1ZzaOx0

D/P is probably the best thief build atm. You can browse up to date builds here: http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki

I find that when picking a weapon set, you should decide which main hand function you like the most:
Dagger: stealth weapon. Back stabs for huge spike damage.
Sword: teleport in and out of a fight. Usually very evasive.
Pistol: Ranged attacks. Capitalizes on keeping distance.

Then, pick you an offhand weapon.

General set roles:
D/D: Big burst with on-hit stealth
D/P: Moderate burst with on-demand stealth
S/D: Teleports and evades 4 dayz
S/P: Teleport and lock down burst
P/P: Gunslinger, consistent damage
P/D: Stealthy gunsliger, less consistent damage
Shortbow: utility weapon

As for gear, you can’t go wrong with some mix of berserker and valkyrie

I pretty much only WvW so here’s my two cents.

D/D:
I personally like this set the most, but it is imo the hardest to use and can be easily countered by other builds. It has the most burst, but is very reliant on landing your CnDs. High risk – High reward for sure.

D/P:
This set has been toned down some, but is still viable. It is in general more reliable than D/D as it has on-demand stealth versus on hit (HS in your BP), but this stealthing also takes more initiative. You can generally be a little more bursty with D/P as fara s your gear goes since you have a lot of blinds, so the set still has a lot of DPS. You really mess up warriors, and D/D thieves.

S/D:
This set is interesting. I like it sometimes because you can play it w/o being dependent on stealth as you have a lot of evades and mobility in general. Generally provides a steady but very high dps, but is incedibly squishy as full zerker is generally what you wear since you need that higher crit chance.

As far as offhand goes, you generally want Shortbow, but you of course don’t have to. I personally use P/D offhand at times because I prefer it with D/D. Really Just play around and find what you enjoy. I’ve killed people with D/D before only to have them say I suck because “D/D burst isn’t even meta.” I enjoy though so I play it. Simple as that.
