New to gw2 and new to thief
For leveling I would recommend sword/pistol, and shortbow for your second weaponset when you unlock weaponswap. It makes leveleing easy. It sure helps if you practice with dagger/dagger, and dagger/pistol, but dagger only hits 1 enemy in front of you, while sword can hit more than just one, as it cleaves. I think it can hit up to 3 enemies. Shortbow is also pretty good for attacking multiple enemies. As being tanky is not a thieves strong point, I suggest getting all gear that has power, or power/precision on it. Maybe a few power/vitlity can’t hurt while leveling. Just get used to circling around mobs and dodging/evading thier attacks. The reason sword pistol is so strong while leveling is that you can drop an aoe field that keeps blinding your opponents, so they will miss. Most NPCs attack slow enough to take advantage of this.

When I was leveling my thief and new to the game I mainly used Dagger/Pistol since Heartseekering out of Black Powder stealths…which I thought was the coolest thing in the world. You should give all weapon sets a chance though and see how you like the playstyle of each.
Ok thanks guys. I’ll go sword and pistol And read up about where to spend points.
Also, if you have difficulties kiting opponents, get signet of shadows for more movespeed and caltrops to spam cripple. The combination of these two will allow you to seperate melee mobs into small packages to pistol whip away.
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
Totally depends on what you enjoy playing. For leveling, it doesn’t matters. If you enjoy dodging, reading the animations and adapting to avoid damage entirely, I recommend dagger / dagger. Sword may be a good choice when you reach endgame but for leveling I think it’ really not that enjoyable, and for “every day” open world gameplay there is no “need” for a specific weapon, you can go and be very effective with whatever you like.
since I’ve just started and the site is a bit lack of details on the class I’ve rolled a necro which I’m also giving a shot,i really have no idea which class i will play, i always play the rogue/assassin so I know ill be keeping it but I’m just confused on all the other classes and what they offer to the table more in depth
What’s the best site for leveing guides and class guides?
What’s the best site for leveing guides and class guides?
Leveling is straightforward: Do quests and dynamic events in any zone your level or lower. Try to complete zones, including all vistas, for additional rewards. You can also do zones a bit higher. WvW also works. Grinding critters is not fast or efficient. Also, make sure to do your Daily every day. Those laurels will make a real difference when you hit 80.
For your first character, I would ignore crafting. It’s a gold sink, and you can level it up rapidly later on.
For class guides, this forum is a solid resource — just go back through the past few pages and you’ll find many posts laying out different builds. The leveling build you have chosen for now, sword/ pistol, is probably the easiest way to progress due to the AoE blind on 5. Eventually, you will want to try other styles to see which you enjoy. I recommend hitting Youtube and checking out vids by “Yishis” and “Laela Blackbird,” which will demonstrate two of the most popular WvW builds (D/D and P/D, respectively).
http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum is also a good site, though not as active as this.
Finally, get Signet of Shadows as soon as you can. The movement speed is a big help.

Don’t worry about where to spend points, you can reset your trait points at the NPC where you can by the manuals to unlock Master and Grandmaster level traits. It doesn’t cost much even when you are lvl 80, less than 4 silvers, and at that level that is 1.5 heart events. When you finish a heart event you get a mail, which has money in it as well. Don’t forget to get those coins.

reroll thief get massive nerfs evey patch roll warrior they are the love of the gw2 team
since I’ve just started and the site is a bit lack of details on the class I’ve rolled a necro which I’m also giving a shot,i really have no idea which class i will play, i always play the rogue/assassin so I know ill be keeping it but I’m just confused on all the other classes and what they offer to the table more in depth
Here is my breakdown of the classes.
Warrior – High damage and high health, in pve they are true faceroll. Late game they are still very much the kings, they have great damage and can take a fair few hits as well. They can use pretty much any weapon, in different combinations. its the arch type warrior really, all up front power.
Thief – My personal fav, the rogue shadow type thing. They are mostly about huge, terrifying burst. Very few classes can keep up with a thiefs burst and overall damage. Sadly they are paper thin at times, so any build will often mix in some way to survive, either better healing or more stealth bonus, anything really to help them live.
Necro – Its the warlock, so lots of damage over time attacks. You can go into power builds and they do that as well. Lots of ways to manipulate the enemy with this build, lots of ways to transform and alter your attack. lot of fun to be had working out all the different ways they do damage. In some ways, opposite to the warrior, they work on controlling and eating away at health.
Mesmer – All about dem clones. How ever you build, your clones will be used in some part. As added AI army, or as suicide attack force. Something truly amazing about a perfect shatter in pvp or wvwvw, that moment you unless hell. They are a little weak on taking damage (not liek the thief, but close enough to smell the same), but again most builds work on countering that whilst also putting out nice damage.
Engie – Ergh, love hate with this one for a lot of people. Its all about what tools you bring to the fight with this one. Your weapon will be a rifle or pistol + pistol/shield and thats it. Not a great deal to change there, but the tools are the show piece. Flamethrowers, bmb kits, mine kits, tool sets with all sorts in, that strange condition gun that never really finds its place sadly. One of the more complex classes, and in terms of PVP, its been the king and the peasent and round again. Each patch brings a new mystery to the engie, some new gift or curse.
Gaurdian – Paladin, sadly not played much, but think magical warrior that is more about the support than anything else. Can put out nice damage, and in good hands can be pretty powerful in pvp as well. They have never been weak, nor too strong. They are the safe choice to some, but with all that magical warfare, if explored, they appear to open up a lot of new playstyles.
Elementalist – Sort of like an engie, but without the hate. Or love. Its a pretty nice take on the mage from ANet, the spells feel powerful, the look good and its a nice playing class. Damage wise, staff wielding eles are the kings of AoE. They can put an awful lot of damage out, but there are bigger sharks out their. The mage close range dagger dagger combo is REALLY fun. Even when the spec is kitten its still fun, works in pretty much anything. So much fun zooming around all over the place. Easy time leveling as well, not as fast as the warrior, but not far off. PVP wise they are good, not great or rubbish, just good.
Ranger – Too be honest I find the class dull as dust. Some like it and you may be one of them, its alright now and again I suppose. You will be using your pet a lot, and I feel its just sort of a younger brother of the warrior. I know trappers in pvp are something a thief will fear (more so now they are kitten, means only the really good players stick with it, and they are still a nightmare).
In PvE to make the theif simple to play Sword / pistol and high initiative Regen builds are the way to go.
Pistol whip is really good damage.
Black powder allows for perma blind and perma weakness from auto attacking.
Headshot is great for removing defiant stacks on champions.
Initiative regen let’s you do all this with more frequency

If you’re interested in playing thief, here are the three primary play styles that you can pick from…
The thief playstyle can, generally speaking, be based on one of three things: psychologically oriented, oriented around single-target slaughter, or oriented around mobility. You, of course, mentioned the psychological aspect.
In sPvP, it’s rare to find good builds that were made just to unnerve people, particularly in tPvP. I see psychological builds as basically including all stealth builds that are either tanky or run 15 or more points in SA (most D/X burst builds don’t run any into SA, though I don’t see why saying that going 10 into SA, for example, should make a build become psychological, especially since most D/X burst builds have 10 or so extra points anyways). The one major example of a good psychological build in tPvP was Cruuk’s build, but that was partially because of the fact that his build was a stealth one that was based a lot around mobility, so he left even good opponents fairly clueless as to his whereabouts. But anyways- psychological builds are good for people that want to play so that they frustrate their opponents, leading to a kitten in their opponents’ armor that they can use against them.
Single-target burst builds are basically any kind of D/X build that doesn’t run any more than 15 points across SA and Acro. They can also be any type of S/P PW burst build. The people who play these kinds of builds are basically the type that is going to step into the boxing ring, and swing once. If that punch isn’t a knockout blow, then they might get to swing once more. If, by then, they still haven’t taken out their opponent, then more than likely, the thief is the one that’s going to be crushed. The other way to play it would be like walking into a boxing ring with two teams of boxers, your team and the enemy team, and finding a weak-looking one and trying to knock him out instantly before being knocked out yourself. Basically, these D/X or S/P burst builds are going to require you to be the kind of player that likes to either blow out your opponents’ brains, or otherwise have your own brain blown out.
The final style is the one dearest to me- mobility. This is for the more positional (as opposed to tactical) type of player, who isn’t necessarily going to go out there and just slam the door on his/her opponent instantaneously. You’re just going to try and limit your opponent’s options while maximizing your own, and when the time comes, you’re going to lay down the iron tactical fist and crush your opponent who- hopefully- you’ve been binding up the entire time.
I’ll mention that there are a few other builds that you can play, but the problem is that these builds tend to either make you an inferior Necromancer or Warrior at best, and honestly, if I wanted to play that way, I’d probably just go roll one of those two classes anyways.
Hope that helps.
