New to thief!
Tip #1: Any build you run is inherently overpowered in the eyes of your opponent, regardless of reality.
Depends on what you’re going for Crazed. Time for my general question list!
Do you like direct damage attacks or condition attacks?
Do you want to annoy the hell out of the enemy with survivability out of stealth, or with stealthing a lot?
Do you want to be able to tank a lot of blows while whittling down the enemy slowly, or are you a fan of the stereotypical glass cannon thief that can easily kill an opponent but can easily be killed?
Are you a fan of melee or ranged attacks?
Your answers to all this will help me give my answer.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
Woo general question list!
1. Um, direct is cool, but i like putting loads of conditions on things because im not very good at staying alive (practice practice practice!!)
2. Stealth is literally THE coolest thing, so preferably that! Hahaha
3. I like to tank and whittle stuff down slowly!
4. I like both, although D/P and P/D are cool, with P/P coming close in the top 3! I use shortbow in events like the LA event we have atm, trying to level (woo level 12 lol)
Thanks for your help!
Sounds like you may want to go Apothecary build. It’s the one I run, and is pretty good for survival both in WvW and out of it. Protip for it, Caltrops and SB#4 will not take you out of stealth, so it’s very easy to double up on healing when you need it. You can also switch out Master of Deception for Hidden Thief for another stealth move, and Long Reach for Bountiful Theft if you want more dodging use during a fight.

Try this build out, it’s P/D that I run in sPvP (hot join):

The basics are, you want to enter stealth whenever possible via CnD to use Sneak Attack.
Ambush + Thieve’s guild helps in creating a bit of chaos in 1v1-3 fights (learn to place ambush as an engagement/offensive trap or during the fight).
Shadow Strike (and now because of the torment) is really good for getting out of close range+helps kitting via torment damage.
Dev venom for when they’re running away or trying not to engage you…
Spider venom is kind of a decoy condition, if the opponent can only remove 1 condition, you want to apply poison and/or torment to ensure that the bleeds you apply thereafter don’t get cleansed (assuming they can only remove 1 condition…)
SB with energy sigil, helps gtfo when the going gets tough. (shadow strike, 1-2 x dodge roll , switch to SB (get quit a bit of endurance back), infiltrator’s arrow, 1-2 x dodge roll = should be way the kitten away from the fight)
For WvW, use Dire stats… :P
Overall (especially with dire) it’s kind of tanky and relys on bleed duration to kill someone as opposed to really condition damage (although obivious it helps, just if you notice the runes are mainly on extending bleeding).
“Loads” of conditions I guess, bleeds, torment, poision, immobo. Heavily reliant on stealth….
It’s a bit of a one trick pony though, as you will just repedately stealth and apply bleeds… Pretty easy to counter… but majority are scrubs and will come to QQ on these forums, so don’t worry you will roll people with this build.
I suggest trying sword/X. I admit when I first started thief I overlooked it, but the style is something I hadn’t experienced before. I usually tell new thieves to try their work with daggers and then when they get comfortable move on to sword. The Thief class can be easy to learn, but very hard to master.
