Thieves with rifle?
Ridiculous!
Completli out of Thief theme :/
So is everything else. Don’t forget we DO NOT have a 1200 range option. Rifle sounds better than Longbow anyway.
Instead of a rifle, I’d rather have a sawed off shotgun. Thieves are considered a close range profession, and it would fit pretty well.
It’s out of character.
Give us shuriken, kunai.

Mmmm, shotgun. That’s not a bad idea.
However: Thieves need a 1200 range option. Yes, they are considered a close-range profession. So are warriors and guardians, the stubborn melee oxen we know and lov-hate, and they have consistent 1200 range options. Quite powerful ones, too.

Let me see…
shadow pursuit = 10 000
shadowstep = 1200
steal = 1500
some skills have 900, but thieves blinks all time. This class just get close at speed of light.
i was literally about to make this thread. thank you for saving me the trouble.

Those are gap closers which have a completely opposite goal from what I am offering. Nice try.
Ghillie Suit is the only one I have an issue with. We have so much access to stealth, this skill seems like an expensive version of stealth that drains your initiative and requires you to stand still and do nothing. I don’t understand its purpose. Does it regen hp? Cleanse conditions? Anything beneficial?
Other than that, it looks fun. Though I will say that one reason I like thief is because it feels very movement heavy and the rifle as you laid it out seems to benefit from standing at range and just plinking away. I like rifles though so I’m not opposed to this weapon.
Longbow does sound more appropriate for a stealthy class to have for a ranged option. Just my opinion.

Hey Seras,
I am not a longbow expert but do you have some ideas of your own for Longbows or know anyone that does? I actually want to see what ideas are out there.
I’d prefer kunai or shuriken!

Why not just roll a ranger if you want a 1,200 range option?
Maguuma
Ide rather roll warrior for the faceroll and 1500 Longbow instead. Its better.

Why?! Because I’m Assassin/Thief/Rouge type, that’s why!
I don’t want to play Ranger, I don’t want to play Warrior!
But I do – to learn these classes and find their weaknesses – only reason, rly!
Oh ok, I do play Ranger for one more reason – He can Snipe and Thief can’t!
Why else?
Coz Rangerz haz petz and Warriorz are stupid buffz! Thatz why!

Hmm…..
1 autoattack Fire 2 arrows in quick succession (pew-pew. pew-pew. pew-pew.) 1200 range, 20% projectile finisher.
2 Contempt Fire an arrow that bounces once to a nearby ally, dealing more damage if the target has a boon and bestowing swiftness (2s) on the ally. 20% projectile finisher, 1200 range.
3 Crystal Arrow Fire a crystallized arrow that crashes for aoe damage. Ground targeted, lightening field, 900 range.
4 Focused Aim Draw the bowstring back and fire an arrow that deals more damage the longer its drawn. Applies weakness (6s) if fired <400 range. Charge-up shot, 100% projectile finisher, 1200 range.
5 Fight or Flight Fire an arrow that, if it hits, gives you stealth (3s), vigor (5s), and swiftness (8s). 600 range.

Sniper rifles really don’t fit if you think about it. What kind of thief snipes? Very, very few I can think of in reality or in fiction. It runs against the spirit of the class which is infiltration, stealth and improvisation. The only theme it shares with a sniper is undetectability, but a lot of other completely unrelated GW2 things have that also going like the Snow Leopard elite.
How many traditional Rangers or casters can use a greatsword?
I think a Thief rifle would be interesting, but I don’t see the logic in having the autoattack chain being short-range -> mid-range -> long-range. The chain wouldn’t be able to hit anything farther away until the third skill, and the first two skills have to succeed to get there.
I do agree that Rangers should get first dibs on the rifle, though. If Thieves got one first, the rage would be incalculable (although amusing to read).
By Ogden’s hammer, what savings!

It isn’t a chain. It changes depending on the distance of the target.

Ooohhh. That makes significantly more sense, but I’m not altogether confident that ArenaNet has the programming capacity to do something like that.

Maybe. If they would optimize their game they definitely would.
I wish that wasn’t such a gaping “if.”

I know right? lol

They already do. Look at Ranger Longbow.

I see what you’re saying, but in the rifle concept he’s talking about 3 distinctly different attacks, not one attack with a damage modifier based on the variable of distance. One is a short-range cone, one is a mid-range with the chance to ricochet, and one is a simple long-distance shot.

I support rifle for thieves.

Terrible idea. I main a thief and I really hope this never crosses a devs mind.

I main a thief and I would break my mouse clicking +1 for this if I was anyone else.
The Predator is my favorite Legendary. for that reason alone (I do like your idea though) I support this

To be utterly honest, I don’t really care if thieves have, will have, or master rifles. I just want a 1200 range option!
Yes, thieves have some of the best gap closers, probably more than any other class to begin with. 1500 range teleport that deals damage, poisons, heals, and stealths you? Awesome!… And then you die 3 seconds later in melee ‘cause you’re squishier than a Norn baby’s diaper.
What about the 900 range on pistols? Aside from the fact pistols do paltry damage in the first place, the 700-800 effective range you’re sitting at is nothing to a determined boss… And for some reason, bosses really like thieves…
Like the idea of a sniper thief… with a load up system :
It would be fun if rifle stops natural initiative regeneration. The first skill use 1 init per use and another skill with a very long static casting time, gives back some initiative.
In furtivity the first skill becomes a good static shot like the F1 of warriors, and the other becomes a skill filling entirely the initiative for a shorter cast (and give revealed like if it was a shot).
No idea for the 3 others skills…
While I do think that thieves are a logical fit for a 1200 range rifle, I don’t think it should be a damage focused set.
It should be a control focused set, designed for either helping allies keep a single target locked down, or helping the thief keep an opponent at range.
Thieves are jerks. Thieves have two basic modes of combat, either high burst low survivability, or extreme survivability through control/evade with low burst.
Thief rifle shouldn’t be a lolheadshot sniper, it should be a weapon that just makes it a proper pain in the neck to close to the target while it slowly whittles away your HP. Take a look at shortbow, it’s focused on the opposite end of the spectrum, getting away from your target with some solid AoE damage.
Rifle would be the flip side of that, a weapon loaded with knockbacks, dazes, cripples, and chills with one solid single target damage spam. Used in solo combat it would be a good kiting weapon that would take a while to down the target, in groups it would be excellent support akin to a GW1 pin down ranger, efficient at keeping a target slowed down and mobility-weak to prevent targets from escaping your friends.
This is easy to design for thief as we’re built around initiative, so we can have a weapon that allows for good long ranged cripple via spam, because that spam would remove our ability to also spam for damage. This means the thief would have the option of either a balanced kite/damage rotation, a full on CC kite, or a full on spam to dump damage.

Chaining shadowsteps to travel a 4.2k distance to an opponent with Basilisk Venom and the immobilize from infiltrators step, it’s pretty funny watching said enemy freak out (and possibly need a change of pants). That being said, we still don’t have a reliable 1200 range option. World bosses = me standing 6 meters in front of everyone else getting focused out of the safety of the zerg.
I would love a thief rifle, but first I would like to be able to dual wield torches give them melee aoe/cleavage and it would be a pretty nice weapon for wvw and pve. Yes, main hand torch, and I personally think it would be awesome.

Wtf? This smells rotten……yup I sense necromancy at work here >_> but I’m in need of more flavores, at this point id even welcome a torch for a thief
Instead of adding any other weapon to Thief class, I would rather want some skills to be reworked.
D/D – Death Blossom + Dancing Dagger rework – making those skills being useful in combat, both pvp and pve.
P/X/P – Increase PvE damage(it’s single target ffs)
Shortbow – Increase speed of aoe skills(even mobs dodge them), Increase PvE damage of Auto Attack.
If we are going to put new weapons on hold for balance fixes you are going to be waiting a long time.

Pssst. That makes it even sillier.

:( I just want a 1200 range weapon… don’t care if it’s a rifle or longbow… Between the two, yeah, rifle hands down. Makes more sense at least in my head.
:‘( O wait, I can’t and aren’t even allowed cuz:
That makes sense….
I should probably roll a Warrior then, so I can roam, zerg, and be viable in any PvE/PvP situation. And only play a thief when I want to roam or be called OP even if I suck (honestly I’m not good, decent at best) but they suck more (and they don’t realize that).Well if you want to do what a warrior can do, then yes, you should lol. Likewise, if you want to do what a Necro can do, you should roll a Necro, etc.
Kinda logical I would think.
We should just all roll warriors if we want that 1200 range weapon… it’s logical right?

Wow this idea looks well thought out but I question if #4 and #5 are really such a good idea. Nevertheless, well done and I hope I see something like this happen in the future.

5 is OP as crap, 15 initiative in total, 7 used for Snipe, 8 initiative left, 200 range per initiative, 1200 range, so 1200 + 1600…. u want thieves to be able to killshot from a 3000 range? LOL

Yeah, OP my kitten .
> Its a long range FACESTAB with up to 8 SECONDS worth of charging for full FACESTAB damage.
> At that range you can dodge the bullet by simply sidestepping.
> You have up to 8 SECONDS to find cover and obstruct it.
> If you are close and the thief misses, he has NO INITIATIVE and your chances of killing him go up.
So if this ever gets implemented and someone dies to it, either the thief’s timing was dead on or the player who died is the worst player in the game.
5-8 Second weak killshot with about .5-1 seconds of time to dodge the incoming round. Most telegraphed skill in the game. Seriously dude…

thieves have stealth. shadow’s refuge, snipe = gg
I wasn’t talking about the thief just standing there in front of the person while sniping

The fact still remains we are the only profession that has no 1200 range attack. I actually see a thief with a longbow over a rifle.
