(The gameplay is nothing special, so please don’t judge too harshly.)

That said, at around the 0:39 mark, my character receives the retaliation boon.

I’ve replayed that several times, in slow motion even, and can’t seem to figure out how/why I got that boon.

It wasn’t on the ranger opponent (not a “stolen” boon).

As far as I can tell, it was applied when the NPC hit me. But that makes no sense.

Anyway, super odd. Potentially a bug with that particular NPC? I dunno.

One of the tiers in Defense Against Guards is you gain 10sec(?) of retaliation each time you are struck by a guard

I bet the ranger was like “What the?” – the bulk of the damage he took seems to be from retaliation.

well retaliation scales off of power, and since you mentioned you were a condi thief, i highly doubt that did a significant portion of the damage. even if you were a power thief it wouldnt be a very significant percentage

Yeah, maybe “bulk of” wasn’t the right phrasing. I just meant, I saw a lot of retaliation ticks, and wasn’t sure why it was happening.

It is quite significant to ranger because of all the multi-hit skills ranger must used to do damage.
