Optimal melee weapon build for PvE?
A good thief will carry both daggers and a sword with them in dungeons.
D/D is the weapon set you should be using most often because of its insane damage.
I am not very experienced in dungeons besides fractals (diff. 67) but from my experience, daggers are completely viable. I’ve been able to melee every boss in fotm with daggers just fine.
Sword is more of a situational weapon. It should be used if you need to blind tank groups (S/P) or if you need constant interrupts (S/D). Also, since P/P is also single target you may need to swap to Sword if you NEED aoe damage otherwise D/D.
In PVE:
S/P → Great for Melee’ing. Black powder (#5) is extremely powerful due to the AI being loldumb. Bring any melee mobs you pull to a ranged mob and kill them that way. The sword also AOE’s 3 mobs at a time.
D/D → Great for boss fighting. Access to CnD is critical in maintaining super high DPS with crit backstabs (when traited) plus insanely fast DPS with the Dagger autoattacks. Heartseeker is the end of the boss when he gets low-ish.
P/D → This CAN be useful, but is strongest as a PVP set. If you’re going to use pistols, use two, and use them on a boss. Unload is godly.
P/P → see above.
D/P → Very fulfilling as PVE and PVP. You won’t have access to CnD like this, but you can drop a blackpowder (#5) and Heartseeker (#2) through it and hit a target for [insert HS damage] and stealth at the same time for a backstab. Access to blackpowder can be very useful vs. bosses as well, when they’re succeptable.
SB → you need this. bring it. It’s your only ranged AOE option that is very much needed for certain fights. Even if you’re bringing P/P, bring a SB. Don’t limit yourself.
D/D is viable for bosses or a fight with a few enemies that are spread out where the 3 target hit on the sword wouldn’t make a difference. S/D can be invaluable in Arah as you can lock down the inquest technicians and deadeyes while your teamates burn the rest of the mobs. D/P can be a little bit of a liability for getting into stealth if you run with a caster heavy group. Sometimes another combo field will take priority and you’ll end up with chaos armor or a fire aura instead. Running D/D and SB, you have access to every combo finisher out there in spamable form. Got a bow warrior or ele in your party? How’s 12 to 15 stacks of area might sound? Area retaliation with your guardian too. Just make sure you put a good amount of toughness and/or vitality so you can soak the occasional big hit (darn those frost wolves in CoE with the short animation massive damage PBAoE…..).
