So shortbow poison + shortbow DETONATE stacks?
I thought only cluster bomb stacks (gives finisher) not the detonate part

No no, my point wasnt to make a Weakness finisher. I was talking for utmost dps in that area, which is poison field + Detonate Cluster.
by just placing poison field and blasting it, enemies wont really be damaged as much if you detonate them

Hey man, thanks for the very nice comment!
Merry Christmas and happy new year!
Awesome video. This gives some of the best advice I’ve seen and I really appreciate a guide vid that emphasizes how to play in a team environment instead of just how to fight against people. I’ll definitely be forwarding this link to people who are new to thieves in sPvP or who just are looking for more advice.

Hey honvas!
Here’s the link to the thread I’ve made a time ago with all the VIABLE Ranked PvP builds:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/PvP-List-Top-Builds
Just scroll up to see my thread when you opened the link!
Cheers and goodluck on your journey!
You’re always free to contact me ingame for some specific questions!
Bumpity bump to bump and stuff
what the..?
I though warping to the roof of Kyho wasn’t possible anymore.
I mean, you can’t even warp to the second floor normally.
learnt a lot. thanks a lot.

learnt a lot. thanks a lot.
I’m glad you learned few tricks!
Where dem Thieves hands at! \o/
Bumpity bump <3
Just bumping again for the new Thieves among us!
This… This is amazing!
You know, I’ve been trying to get more into PvP and wanted a comprehensive beginners guide video explaining our role in the mode. I knew some of the basic stuff, but felt like I was missing a lot of the intricacies. However, the only thing I EVER seem to see on YouTube is match montages, which is at best a rather mediocre way to learn some combat specific strategies and at worst just showing off. This is just what we needed.
I will also be adding this thread to my regular bump train.

Might be sad but what thief would 1v1 an engi, necro, ele :/
Results mostly in a suicide :p

From Gw2Wiki – “Thieves are expert in the shadow arts. They utilize stealth and shadowstepping to surprise and to get close to their target. They’re deadly in one-on-one combat using their agility, acrobatic fighting style, and the ability to steal to overcome their enemies. They have an affinity for setting traps and using venom. As an adventurer profession, thieves wear medium armor.”
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great guide. One that shows what a thief can do even though it’s not much and an engi or a guardian would have been a better help to your team. It’s sad what the thief has become because of all the nerfs.

I do agree thief is good 1v1, but it’s not good in 1v1 on a point, where the shadowsteps and stealth are useless :p. Thieves are good to +1 fights, quick decaps and other roaming..
Ye thief had alot to soak in from the nerfs.. Rightfully? I don’t know tbh.. S/D became quite a wet noodle due the might nerf (which was totally not needed on S/D tbh)

Yeah sadly :/ the only real threat we in have spvp is the d/p panic build which is still really effective, especially when you take more immobs like devourer venom:) mix it up with quick venom you’ll have 3 reliable locks. Devourer, basi & lastly panic strike. Oh yeah dude denied that’s my favourite build currently with shadow step(need em stun breaks) n SR.

Panic strike is indeed strong.
Immobilize itself is strong and kinda.. broken? Sometimes when trying to perform a skill without target, it doesn’t work and needs u to spam it untill it does
Do you have any advice on what a thief should be doing at the very start of the match? I find I’m used to more bruiser type classes and used to head mid, but on thief it seems like it’s not too smart. What’s the best way to start off?

Totally depends on enemy comp but if you’re facing an enemy team with a Thief, it might be good idea to go close with a pointholder and yourself.
This way incase the enemy thief used SR to cross, you can still counter him
If you’re not facing a team with a thief, you’ll have to try to +1 fights wherever you can, ofcourse focusing the player causing most pressure to your team
Cheers
Im seeing an overall increase of succesful thieves in PvP!
That’s great guys!
think this should get pinned for all the new thieves or new pvpers
“…don’t engage a fight unless it’s a thief or a mesmer.”
If the enemy’s Thief is taking your advice to only engage a Thief or Mesmer in 1v1, then they should be able to take you out, right?
If not, then your advice doesn’t really work. :/

What if you can’t win that either? I’ve seen Necros and Engineers who can keep 2-3 enemies in the node while defending it even against Thieves. If you’re a Thief and cannot defend or take a node by yourself, then perhaps you’re better off playing another class…right?

Not really, with +1 I mean outnumbering a fight (making 2v2 into 3v2)
If u fail that, then you need to practice a bit more

That’s my point. If you go with a teammate to outnumber a bunker Engi — and fail — how exactly do you “practice” for that situation?
However, if you choose to play Necro instead of Thief, you can single-handedly take the point away from a bunker Engi — no need to +1 anyone.
Besides, if it takes 3 of you to handle 2 of them (3v2), that means your team is not holding a node or just about to lose a node because chances are, one of your node is also outnumbered.
Let’s say two nodes are guarded by bunker Engi each and the mid-node has 3 enemy players guarding it. As a Thief, what is your primary role?
It is a known fact that Thief cannot decap from a bunker Engi and to outnumber the mid-node that means you’ll have to 4v3 them, if not 5v3.
Do you see where I’m getting at?

Then mid is priority because, as u said, the thief can’t kill a bunker/decap engi.
Also, if u succeed getting mid in that big teamfight, you can just snowball onto the bunker engi
FYI: necro might be able to take down an engi, but necro has alot more counters than a thief. Let’s not even talk about mobility

- I did not agree nor think that thief is useless in PvP.
- A Thief can’t kill bunker (Sentinel) Engineers alone, and he shouldn’t even try. Thieves are meant to +1 fights, to make it swift as possible.
Thieves offer burst on demand for their team, unlike Necro’s

Any other profession can +1 fight and can even take nodes alone.

Then take a Warrior instead…I’m still not convinced that Thief is useful in PvP. Sure they can travel fast, but in 3-1-1 split where 2 nodes are held by Engis, traveling fast has no value.

PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
“…don’t engage a fight unless it’s a thief or a mesmer.”
If the enemy’s Thief is taking your advice to only engage a Thief or Mesmer in 1v1, then they should be able to take you out, right?
If not, then your advice doesn’t really work. :/
Engaging =/= winning the 1v1 ^-^
What’s the point if you can’t win? O.0
If u know you can’t win (based on earlier engages) then you just don’t and +1 anywhere else instead
If u fail that, then you need to practice a bit moreThat’s my point.
Also, if u succeed getting mid in that big teamfight, you can just snowball onto the bunker engiFYI: necro might be able to take down an engi, but necro has alot more counters than a thief. Let’s not even talk about mobility
Did you just agree that Thief is useless in PvP without realizing it?
No, I didn’t
Can you please clarify this?
…as u said, the thief can’t kill a bunker/decap engi.
I’m not sure what you mean by that.
- I did not agree nor think that thief is useless in PvP.
- A Thief can’t kill bunker (Sentinel) Engineers alone, and he shouldn’t even try. Thieves are meant to +1 fights, to make it swift as possible.
Any other profession can +1 fight and can even take nodes alone.
Thieves offer burst on demand for their team, unlike Necro’s
Then take a Warrior instead…I’m still not convinced that Thief is useful in PvP. Sure they can travel fast, but in 3-1-1 split where 2 nodes are held by Engis, traveling fast has no value.
- Any other class can +1, but can’t deliver burst on demand => resulting in being slow in rotations and being outnumbered/outrotated later on (assuming enemy team has a Thief)
- If you’re going to replace Thief for a Warrior (assuming you don’t have a warrior yet), you’re in for an outrotation. Warriors are slow, despite their leap/swiftness (if we’re talking about the Meta).
- Shoutwarrs weak spot is burst. Your enemy thief is in for a free kill on your warrior once he’s outnumbered for few seconds.
FYI;
- Any other class can take a node.. Ok.. But what environment of PvP are we talking about? Beginners, average or experienced? Because afaik a d/d cele ele should not try to decap from another d/d cele ele over a point.. In an average/experience environment. Basically, you don’t try to decap a point unless its big in your favor (free or the one you counter; Ele vs Engi)

Hey Bro, wanted to ask you something. Can a skillful S/D thief beat every class if both opponents are evenly experienced? Speaking mainly about WVW cause I rarely WVWVW so I can’t say anything about it. At least make it a draw and not run away as a thief. I get that you can disengage in wvw but I’d rather not if it’s a 1v1

I would like to say yes, but it’s a no in WvW environment.
Condi mesmers, condi engineers, axe/shield/hammer or GS warriors are normally your downfall there
