Rangers.......
Why are you engaging with CnD? 6 initiative for a 1.5 dmg multiplicator is high.
Are you playing acro or sa s/d? With acro s/d you don’t run out of dodges against a ranger.
Save your steal for rapid fire. Dodge their knockback. Profit.
Most LB ranger just suck, I would say it’s the easiest fight for a thief, but I’ve met one very good in a 1vs1 arena.
Engaging with CnD as a S/D (which doesn’t rely on Stealth really) is indeed not the very best move like Apocom mentioned above.
I don’t really know what to say though. It depends on your build on what you can do.
Don’t spam LS and avoid pointless dodging… Really, and S/D thief shouldn’t run out of dodges in any 1v1 fights regardless of wether they run Acrobatics or Trickery.
From the information you gave us, that’s really all I can say :\
What’s a good way to engage them, then? I try to dodge through rapid fire and their knock backs, but the auto attacks are what really get me as well as the on procc sigils plus the pet. When they go sword, what should I do? Swap to to SB and use 3 to dodge most of that and lay down poison per usual?
And yes, I’m the usual Acro SD 2/0/0/6/6
I’ll definitely save my steal for rapid fire.
If you can dodge their PBS you can use infil sigil for the engage. If they play with GS you can stay on s/d, if they play s/d it depends. Most rangers just spam the skills, so you can also stay save on s/d (nearly every single ranger i have met, is using the dodge in succession)
I don’t have a problem with them using d/p. Only time the get me is when I’m engaged with someone else and low and I eat a rapid fire…
In 1v1 just pay attention to their knock back timer and immunity activation. I just stealth when they have immunity up. Stay stealthed until it drops. Then dps and keep them blinded…
Engage from behind an obstruction with infiltrator’s strike. Then just auto attack. Don’t faceroll or do any pre-planned rotation. React to them. When you see the lines go around their longbow, use flanking strike to evade it, then comes rapid fire, which you dodge or infiltrator’s return away from. They’ll likely swap to GS now. Re-engage. If you see them holding the GS up to block, or see "block" float on your screen, dodge immediately to avoid the knockback. Next comes 2 or 3, you can dodge those with a dodge roll or flanking strike - they are very telegraphed. You might get hit by GS 5 which is the daze, in which case you can steal to daze them as well, break out of it, or just dodge until it’s gone. You’ll have to do this s couple of times because most rangers will use signet of stone. When they use it, just go back behind your obstruction, or CnD if you can’t, and wait it out. Be sure to dodge their pet’s knockdown and fear. The knockdown is when they dog crouches, and the fear is when he tilts his head back.
As for engaging with CnD+steal, if the ranger sees you start CnD, they may dodge, in which case you miss you stealth and your steal. Not good. It also means because you didn’t engage with infiltrator’s strike, that you have no return port to escape rapid fire or wait out signet of stone.

Run off hand pistol in one of your weapon sets. Pistol 4 their rapid fire.
a good lb ranger should beat a theif 1v1 assuming equal skill.
in team comp though thief soft counters rangers….just because many times a ranger used his cd’s already on trying to burst a target they could see,.. But if a ranger sees you coming… and has his Cd’s… he will win unless you disengage… which you can easily do.
However, most LB rangers suck, so usually try to 1v1 them anyway.
Don’t get discouraged. Rangers are well equipped to beat thiefs 1v1.
In some instances though a thief does truly have the upper hand… this will be in areas where there is a lot of LOS. But overall, ranger >thief.
All those people telling you .. your bad lrn2ply are just trolls.

Pretty much this. I’m one of the few good longbow rangers playing PvP and I rarelly lose any 1v1s against thiefs. We are well equiped, but if thiefs use LoS in their advantage in maps like Niflhel they can beat us.
Also thiefs should always try to get as close as possible to the ranger and burst them while moving around them. Not many know how to track their target with their camera using their rapid fire, and thus will just cancel their skill and put it on CD.

This sounds spot on. Pressure them, and stay close. Use your port out if in serious danger only. Most don’t expect you to push on and panic. Also they are usually soft as hell. So once you hit, you hit hard.
Save steal to interrupt their rapid fire/barrage (sometimes you’ll want to interrupt barrage when they drop it on themselves).
Use CnD when they go immune to give yourself breathing room (or Inf return if you can get out of LoS by using Inf Return) If you can get the Tac strike from behind, you’ve neutralized 3/4’s of their immunity.
You shouldn’t be running out of dodges – assuming you’re not already low in init/endurance when the fight starts, you should be able to Dodge→FS→dodge→dodge, which should be more than enough dodges to evade all of RF and PBS. Yes it’s expensive, but it’s better than eating an RF. If you’re running the standard Meta 2/0/0/6/6, you probably have SoA as well, giving you even more dodges.
If you’re stuck duking it out over open terrain (no LoS blocking available), try to put them in between you and your Inf return circle – that way they’ll have to do a 180 to keep attacking you when you inf return.
pre-ordered HOT at this point,
save yourself the money and don’t bother.
