Reasons to get Staff on Thief Elite Spec.
No………….!
Bye.
As much as I’d rather they got rifles, I don’t think staves are a bad choice for thieves. It’s a two-handed melee option, which is something they’ve never had. It’s also a good opportunity to give another melee staff moveset. My only real issue with it is the overlap with rangers, who also get staves.

Ranger is probably going to get a more support/ranged oriented staff set while thieves would get more brawlery style similar to S/D Acrobatics set(or at least that’s the idea)
Rifle would be nice too, no doubt about that. However, the game is already plagued by Longbow rangers that don’t know how to play properly just running up to a ledge and spamming 1 and Rapid Fire. Thief could have the same problem if Rifle was given to them considering they also get stealth and shadowstepping. Can you imagine how annoying it would be fighting a thief who pew pews from a distance and as you run up to him, stealths away. Relocates, then repeats. There would not be much skill involved with that sort of mechanic especially in group fights were they could just take advantage of their slipperyness and the fact that you’ll probably focus other targets first while Sniper thief hangs back and casually nabs kills.
The only reason Staff on Ele and Longbow on Ranger is manageable is because they don’t have the survivability of a thief that can hide away. I mean, with the change to class mechanics with Elite Specs, Anet could make Rifle a skill based weapon that doesn’t have synergy with stealth or maybe can’t attack from stealth until your stealth buff runs out but it will likely just become another Longbow Ranger situation except with more survivability and less skill gap to use.
Those are good points. Even though they might be the same category, the staves for rangers and thieves will not really be the same weapons, if thieves’ staff moveset is melee.
I mostly want rifle because it’s not too impressive on the two classes that can use it now, and I’d like for there to be a proper sniper option. But giving it to ranger or thief isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Yeah I know what you mean. I would appreciate a rifle on Thief because it would turn them into a hitman kinda character which would be awesome but it would have to be done with skill in mind so new players hoping to become Snipers actually have to invest time into learning how to play the class unlike those types of Rangers who never even switch weapons in a fight because all they know is Longbow pew pew.
Cool idea, i mean im hoping for OH sword,Rifle, or MH Axe But if we get melee staff i hope they do it like that
OH sword or rifle imo. Rifle would be a TRUE single target long range weapon (because pistols aren’t ;p). Elite spec Sniper or Marksman or Hawkeye or Sharpshooter.
OH sword will look bad with main hand autoattacking dagger/pistol. It’ll not happen anytime soon.

Giving rifles to rangers and thieves has the problem of making it sufficiently different from their existing ranged options, indeed. Especially differing it from longbows for rangers. With thieves, both pistols and shortbows are fast-firing weapon, so it’d be easier to make a slow-firing sniper weapon.
I don’t really get why people want off-hand sword for thieves. They’ve got plenty of dual-wielding. I could see them getting a mace main-hand, but a sword off-hand? It doesn’t really give them anything new.
A slow firing, hard hitting weapon would be interesting for sure. For a while, I actually thought they could even give axe to Thief and make it a sort of Bandit/Pirate raider type of class. Not that I would use something like that though, not a big fan of axe.
What still remains is that Thief is the only profession in the game that does not have a 1200 range weapon. My Guardian only had a scepter, and now he is going to get a Longbow as a Dragon Hunter.
Considering Ranger gets a staff, I don’t see them doubling the same weapon type for two Elite professions. Rifle is under used in the game, just like the War horn, compared to Great Sword and Staff for example. Sure you could get a 1200 range attack on a Thief staff but they are missing out on a prime opportunity to give the Thief and the Rifle more diversity.

Why? There’s no good reason really. Especially when rangers get a ranged mage staff while thieves will probably get a melee staff which have completely different play styles. They might as well be two completely different weapons in the first place.

That would be pretty cool too. Maybe we’ll see something like that in the future? I’m not crazy about new weapons being tied to elite specializations, to be honest, but that’s how it’s gonna be. I guess otherwise they’d have to rearrange traits every time they introduce a new weapon. Elite specializations can be slotted in more easily.
As far as rifles go, if rangers and thieves don’t get them, then they should at least try to make them more attractive choices for the classes that do get them.
Hmmm….play as Darth Maul and be unable to buy the skins/armor OR play as Nova…and buy the skins and armor with ease? I VOTE NOVA! Also, Thief is supposed to get in and out easily. Staff is slow, bulky, messy. It is anti-thief thematic imo. I’d think Off-hand sword or great sword long before staff. And yea, greatsword. They are very lenient on their GS ideas and themes (I mean comon, a katana?). Staff is always a fat stick. Again imo.

My biggest issue is that 99% of the current staff skins would likely look AWFUL with melee animations.

I thought this at first too, but after trying Revenant melee staff with a few of the existing skins, it didn’t look half bad at all.

You’re missing the point. As I explained in my opening post, Star Wars: The Old Republic’s version of a thief wields a staff and with great success. You get lots of cc’s, great mobility in the form of a long rush skill, stealth, and damage output. I’m comparing the two classes and why I think staff on thief can be pulled off just fine seeing as they share similarities.
