Jon and Karl’s methodology appears to be avoid first hand experience, rely on second hand hearsay, buff already popular options, and nerf under performing options. But above all, quash fun when ever it is found.

This reminds me of Dragonhunter. It’s juvenile and not creative. They proceed to tell us it actually is creative because it’s a “high concept” and if only we understood high concepts. I explained to my friend the Dev’s explanation why ricochet was removed and he said: “Huh? What does purity of pistols even mean? Don’t they realize bullets can ricochet?”

Purity of Pistols. Another High Concept term for an answer when they don’t actually have an answer.

Yeah, it seems they’re really pretty awful.

I will start with a blatant bribe and then go from there, consider bringing back Ricochet and we can see about getting cookies and coffee delivered!

So no one can deny that there was RNG in Ricochet. Also no doubt that people would merrily blast away in a number of cases.

For some there was also some skillful play in the ability. When looking at a group of targets in PvP or WvW you would need to think about can you reach your intended target directly and if no, which target or targets might be the next best choice to try and bounce the shot into to try and hit said final target. Besides being the key fun, it also made it challenging which seems to be the new theme of the combat changes.

Working towards trying to un-train the mind to do this but that stands out in PvP/WvW the most at least to me. Now I get balancing, but if the tests showed that using a particular combination of new traits made Ricochet over the top then tell us that. Sadly players are left more with the feeling that it just wasn’t something a team member enjoyed so it was removed. And again, I think a valid substitution to test might be trying a piece trait somewhere in the line, though Ricochet itself would be preferred it it wasn’t game breaking in some way.

I really think they can do better than just putting Ricochet back in, honestly. The set was never designed well and Ricochet more or less acted as a band-aid.

My contention is that they need to buff Vital Shot and convert Unload into a cone AoE.

It would be cool looking but from a game mechanics perspective it wouldn’t make sense since all auto attacks use only your main hand weapon resp. the weapon skills use just the weapon they’re associated with. That’s how every weapon skill on every class works (except for dual skills on Thief).

I think an on crit effect for the AA the way to go with a cooldown to fix that vital shot issue.. As example 1 ini on crit (5 second cooldown or the old opportunist)). This boosts the AA of power and not so much so the p/d set. It helps address the need for INI in the P/P set.

Or some other boon added to an on crit .

No, Unload works perfect as is, with the exception that it needs Ricochet back as it was right before they nerfed it. Then we finally have a chance against skilled Rangers and Necros w/ minions again.

For me it was definitely build breaking , not only did i loose Ricochet, but also lost my other big trait too on the same day which was Hastened Replenishment. I was a P/P thief and those traits were my bread and butter. Ricochet was the reason i picked to play a thief, with it gone i guess i will either need to find a new profession or find a new game. Hastened Replenishment i used as sort of an ammo reload for Unload skill. It both really burns me and saddens me i may have to say good bye to my main character. I am waiting to see how Arenanet resolves this before i preorder the expansion, because if it isn’t fixed there is no point at this point to consider the expansion.

That’s… really grasping at straws. It was entirely about it being viable. When a set has no multi-target options at all, like P/x doesn’t, it simply isn’t viable in PvE. That’s why Ricochet acted as a band-aid. It’s inappropriate to use traits in this way, though. Traits are meant to provide thematic bonuses, they aren’t supposed to compensate for an under-tuned or poorly designed weapon set, which is exactly what Ricochet was doing.

Of course, the problem is that the balance people clearly don’t have much of an idea of what they’re doing, so they removed Ricochet, the only thing making P/P functional, without making any other changes. So now we have a set that’s entirely borked with no trait dependency instead of just mostly borked with a critical trait dependency.

My argument is that simply bringing Ricochet back is a solution, but is not the best solution, because P/P still sucks at baseline and Ricochet would still be “overpowered” to compensate. It’s better to take a more discerning look at the set and make comprehensive updates to the skills so that P/P is usable without Ricochet.

A cone AoE, hm? So you mean something more like guardian staff #1 skill but with more range? I’ve seen this suggested before for Unload, and I think that could be interesting. I’d still want Ricochet back though because it was useful for more skills than just Unload (though Unload probably benefited the most out of it). To repeat an example from earlier, a bouncing headshot to interrupt a group of mordrem menders is pretty sweet!

Hmm… if Unload was turned into a cone AoE though… Where would that leave our missing trait? I guess Ricochet would only be applied to the other skills, I guess. Huh, gotta think about that one.

I do agree that more than Ricochet is needed to make P/P an overall better build, but bringing it back is a good place to start, in my opinion. I also hate how Pistol Mastery was lumped in with ankle shots and only applies to crippled foes (it’s something like a 3 second duration on an 8 second cooldown on only a single target rather than a base damage increase overall… i hate it).

This is definitely the issue I see. I’m all for adding/modifying traits and skills to promote build diversity, but it should never be at the cost of an existing build unless the build in question is totally OP and is in need of a nerf. That was not the case for dual pistols as it wasn’t OP by any stretch of the imagination. It was fun and different. Underused perhaps, but that should call for devs to look into ways to improve it, not cripple it to near uselessness.

Agreed, honestly I’d be happy with them just adding ricochet back.

Ricochet isn’t only for p/p. It’s a mainstream way of thinking and of course thinking that way would make it all about viability.
I may be one of the rare thieves who mainly used ricochet for something OTHER than unload.

I used it to teleport/bounce between foes when using shadow shot. I could totally do without it, but it was simply a mechanism that made me hooked up to thief.

So saying it’s just about viability is preposterous.
And denying the fact that some people may use a trait in a different way, is no different than anet’s way of thinking : make everyone play the same formatted way.

What you’re proposing is a new mechanism : I’m not for nor against it.
For all I know it may even be a good mechanism.
But suggesting it as a replacement of the former one is still denying some player’s way of enjoying the class.

Then again, yeah I agree it’s not also only about mechanism. Viability has also it’s weight and I phrased it wrong in my previous post.
But just as you can’t deny the viability factor, you can’t deny the mechanism factor either.
(also, as far as I recall ricochet has never been overpowered. And I’ve never heard anyone in the receiving hand complain about that trait)

I have made a build with venoms and traps to intensify condition damage and using pistol skill 1s stealth attack to unload venoms is hektik bro. Its like using p/p again wait till you see the damage you output

It has bounce effect, not ricochet. It is a dagger skill, it costs initiative, it gives a little amount of Cripple. The condition damage builds might feel strong for now, but that’s until they decide to tone down the Condition burst.

Tabootrinket made a very reasonable comparison actually. You are the one grasping at straws. There are some builds and play styles where p/p is extremely viable without Ricochet. Let’s take a look at one example:

D/D burst thief signet build with p/p as alternate set.

You mainly use d/d for the high DPS burst and stealth and mobility, with some evade. Let’s say you miss your backstab and need another quick high DPS burst while under Revealed and you still have 15 stacks of might. Switch to p/p and do another 6k to 12k to finish your target off. Also have a handy interrupt, blind and cripple at your disposal. There are tons of people who love this single-target playstyle and consider it very viable.

It’s better to take a more discerning look at the set and make comprehensive updates to the skills so that P/P is usable without Ricochet.

No p/p does not need changed. You are walking a dangerous path by asking for more change. What you are likely to get is a watered-down version of what used to be a great combination of p/p and Ricochet. The best course is for aNet to restore Ricochet EXACTLY as it was before the nerf, and to leave p/p alone.

Well we are in the same boat then. I played stealth condi thief and my playstyle and build was very team-support oriented. I used cripple, interrupts and blinds in group fights all the time and found the mechanics worked very well with Ricochet.

Altho the loss of Ricochet made my playstyle and build unviable, like I mentioned above (and you did too) there are others who consider it completely viable. So I still say the loss of the Ricochet mechanism is the main issue. If aNet wants to claim “Play how you want” (and they still do in their marketing), then they need to bring Ricochet back for build diversity and let us play how we enjoyed playing for the past 3 years.

So I’ve played my thief once since the update. I had no problem killing people or surviving but I got bored pretty quickly and changed characters. I loved playing P/P, it’s not as effective as the majority of the builds available to thieves but it made the class fun for me.

This change was pointless and it completely ruined the class for me. I don’t see my thief making it back into my character rotation anytime soon.

This is basically the best response to those who keep saying “P/P can still do damage, don’t worry, it’s totally fine in PvP!”

We aren’t arguing the potential damage output for dual pistols (despite the loss of the Pistol Mastery trait). We are upset that it has lost all its AoE capabilities (sigils aside) and in turn much of its utility. Most of all, however, we are upset that it was a pointless omission to an otherwise incredibly fun build that worked quite well in PvE and even WvW to an extent. The reasoning behind it is equally absurd, and makes as little sense as removing Ricochet in the first place.

I want to believe there’s a place for Ricochet in the near future, but the silence from Anet (apart from the seemingly indifferent responses on some twitch stream) isn’t very reassuring to say the least.

My fingers are still crossed for a gunslinger elite… even though recent speculation suggests something else.

Actually, the silence may mean nothing at all other than they don’t feel the need to respond. Anet did not comment on the broken 3d bug, and I don’t think they responded to the Dailies nerf QQ thread either, but people posted every day, made their voices heard, and eventually aNet fixed it.

So just keep making your dissatisfaction heard, ask to bring it back, and we have a good chance of getting what we want.

Well we’ve reached page 6 and unfortunately our first dissenting opinion who seems to think we actually care at all about the concept of “Purity of Pistol” and what that is supposed to mean for Anet and the devs who clearly don’t play thief or know anyone who does.

I wonder if Anet plans to reveal the thief elite spec soon. Even if signs are pointing to melee staff instead of Gunslinger, I’m still very eager to find out what it is. Heck, I just want to see any elite spec reveal soon, it’s been a number of weeks since the last one.

Also, given that Anet has responded to just about all the other profession forums, I sure hope they eventually acknowledge all this thief feedback, especially in regards to dual pistols getting needlessly shafted.

Ah another loss to a ranger. Rangers can burst every bit as hard as thieves, have a higher health base, and a pet. And the ranger i fought was very good at keeping his pet between me and him, so a good majority of my burst hits did not connect.

I find it funny that they take the liberty to delete contents from the game without warning, and then try to ignore complaints, wait for them to sink in the threads and help them sink even more by deleting some posts.

Because yeah, it’s not just a nerf/buff (i.e. an alteration in numbers). They simply deleted a mechanism.
The whole selling point of this game was to play the way we want. But they just delete possibilities without asking the players. They are just looking down on their own customers.

Well, I effectively stopped playing my thief, which I spent long hours on to equip her with full ascended gear that fits P/D.

Instead, I raised a beautiful new Ranger and am loving it.

And this is what I expect to happen, in general. People will stop playing thief. The number of thieves in game will plummet, as they have done once before (4s revealed nerf) and Anet will realise their mistake.

And I haven’t even switched to another class out of spite or just to drive home a message. That was the natural thing for me to do, in order to enjoy myself.

They can give me all the infractions they want, I’ll repost as often as I want until there’s a non-sarcastic, well explained reason.

All ranger bows, warrior rifle, Engi rifle shots can pierce up to 5 targets, so technically 50k+ damage is possible from 1 ability.

Engi/Mesmer pistol shots bounce, greatsword 2 bounces, 1 pierces 3 targets if hitting furthest.

Well, I effectively stopped playing my thief, which I spent long hours on to equip her with full ascended gear that fits P/D.

And I haven’t even switched to another class out of spite or just to drive home a message. That was the natural thing for me to do, in order to enjoy myself.

I actually quit playing for a while. Then I came back, tried playing with other builds, still not really anywhere near as fun, and getting killed by mesmers and rangers who I used to destroy…that just kinda put the nail in the coffin.

I started to play ranger again too. She could hold her own before, but now she’s just deadly. Still, not as fun as thief p/p used to be. So I just log in, get my daily log in reward, maybe play a few matches, log out. Prolly only a matter of time before the reality of it sets in and I never come back.

They can give me all the infractions they want, I’ll repost as often as I want until there’s a non-sarcastic, well explained reason.

All ranger bows, warrior rifle, Engi rifle shots can pierce up to 5 targets, so technically 50k+ damage is possible from 1 ability.

Engi/Mesmer pistol shots bounce, greatsword 2 bounces, 1 pierces 3 targets if hitting furthest.

Ele/Necro staff pierce, bounce, or aoe on target impact.

Pistols need some AoE component, whether it’s Ricochet or something else, to be at all usable in PvE. Then again, Anet rarely shows any concern over how well something works in PvE.

I’m not sure what else there is to say in this thread.

If I wanted to use a bow as my ranged option, I would have made a ranger. Since my thief now basically has to use a bow at range, I mainly play my ranger. I still prefer my thief pistols with ricochet, but not without.

I’ve been playing Pistol/Pistol thief since just after the karka event. It’s definitely in a better place than it was back then, and Ricochet has always been (quite literally) hit or miss. But it had interesting implementations, and taking it out does nothing except remove depth from the game. Being able to penetrate enemy hordes is an exceptional advantage, especially when two-foot tall menders can body block shots intended for three-meter husks (something that really ought to be fixed in and of itself). If the issue is regularity, then don’t make it a flat chance, tie it into crits or something that the players themselves can build for. Problem solved.

And don’t tell me that it reduces the ‘purity’ of pistol. Our shortbow gets ricochet as its autoattack.

Bah, you know what, I’m only checking the forums now and then to see if there’s any changes in sight.
But actually I’ve quite already moved on to another mmo right now. I’m really getting sick of anet’s policy.

I find it funny how they say in their annoucement : " we’re going to listen to your thoughts and suggestions ".
They even made a thread in the “Guild Wars 2 Discussion” section named : “Things we know” talking about things they had to fix, but nothing about the skills they discarded even with all the complaints.

Well, I think I’m pretty much done.

For those of you upset – do NOT post once and let it go. Anet actually does respond to player requests if we make our voices heard long enough.

It worked with the daily achievements – people complained about having too many and they changed it. Then enough people complained about not having enough daily achivements – and they changed it again.

This is why I’m making my very first reply ever. I’m constantly reading post in the forums to get info and stuff, but never reply until now. I bought the ultimate expansion shortly before the patch that removed the ricochet, and now I’m wishing I didn’t. I’ve been playing the game since it came out, hardly taking breaks from it for no more than 3 wks at a time. This is the first mmo that I’ve played that I didn’t end up quitting after 7 months from its first release. So, it’s obvious I really like this game and the game play, especially the game play of the pistol thief, which eventually became my main toon once I discovered how fun the game play was with p/d. I also venom share with the shadow arts trait line and boon share on steal, to be a good team player. I love the ricochet because of getting the aoe in wvw zergs or small skirmish fights. It makes me feel I’m really helping with group fights, more so than with only the venom and boon sharing. I really hate the shortbow and only see #5 being useful for escaping a group that’s trying to yank me because they outnumbered me. To keep me playing the game, I’d really like to see ricochet return. When I discovered it was removed, along with the range on pistols, that’s the first time, I was so upset with this game. And I usually don’t get bothered with games like this because of preferring to keep games from effecting my life like that. It upset me so much, here I am, writing a reply, for the first time ever.
