Of the classes that I have played extensively in sPvP so far (thief, necro, engi) only the thief has a set cycle of abilities that they use. I saw in WoW that people call this a “rotation” and I was originally glad when I thought GW2 had avoided this play style.

Having a rotation completely deskills a class. Most classes you need to do on the fly decision making to pick which skill to use, but thief just employs his BS chain or runs away until he can.

I’d really like to see this disappear altogether. I’m not talking about nerfing. I’m talking about changing thief skills so that they do not have such an obvious and rigid order.

It just creates a game where the class requiring least skill rises to the top, and who wants that???

Err, in my experience thieves are the profession least inclined to use a rotation. Every other profession actually has traditional MMO cooldown-based skill bars that lend themselves to using abilities in a certain order and then every time they pop back up.

Thieves usually have an opening combo, but who doesn’t? And past the first few seconds of combat, there’s no real “rotation” at all for thieves.

So you’re saying that you find thief to be only backstabbing or leading up to backstab?

Heres a revolutionary, some would say crazy, idea for you.

Dont run a backstab build.

I know it seems like it’s a ridiculous concept, like skinny dipping with your clothes on. But it CAN work.

TS, you should try playing a GS warrior and do the 100b rotation.

point is, it is not just thieves, some classes also have a “rotation” as you call it, to do maximum damage by chaining together weapon and utility skills.

We all do as we must to make our way in this world and unfortunately,
we have to do things others may qualify as “evil”.

Depends on Weapon Set.
I play 90% with Dagger/Dagger.

I open up with Steal, 3xDeath Blossom, Heartseeker, Death Blossom, Heartseeker. Then the fight is usually over.

Hope you get my point.

You open up with using 26 initiative, on two different moves that have 0 synergy with each-other?

There are no “rotations”.

There are merely some abilities that synergize with each other. Hence it makes sense to use them consecutively.

Examples are: Cloak & Dagger + Backstab , Charge stun + 100 Blades etc.

Your thief skills have an order? While playing as a Thief, I feel more open to skill choice mid-combat than any other profession. I never get tied in to an opening combo, or a “burst” or anything like that. Just don’t use a gimmicky backstab build. Problem solved.
