Shadow Refuge and downed state
They’re looking for their auto attack chain to continue, indicating a hit. It’s a more advanced strategy and a great way to add counter play to the tactic. I’ll do it all the time against a thief.
To make it harder to find you, try using your downed Teleport to get around a corner or somewhere out of the way.
When I can’t find a thief I KNOW I downed in sr I will sweep the area with my gs in a circle pattern and if I can’t find them fast I will use my wolf’s howl (strikes area 600 range for weak dmg) skill to presumably interrupt their downed healing. At that point their stealth is up in a few more seconds and I finish them.
I will load a vid of a recent fight against a thief I downed in sr and how I found him to give you a perspective on it.
Yeah, pretty much a counterplay issue. AA or skills that target through stealth like Life Transfer, are commonly used to find thieves. But in unranked and wvw about 50% they wont look for the thief.
As others said they’re looking for the AA chain to continue. I also listen for the thief to shout “help” as it lets me be sure they’re downed.

A fire sigil proc works nicely too.

thief shortbow-AA on nearby ambient creatures is also great to find downed thieves.
With all due respect, it isn’t magic. It’s a l2p issue
There are 5 to 6 different ways people use to find stealthed downed players.
This is WAI and a good mechanic. No other way to put it.
As others have mentioned, its fairly easy to find the players in downstate.
1. Game sounds on and hearing the cry for help from the down player.
2. Using AAs to see if the chain activates.
3. Any bouncing skill will still bounce the downed player (mesmer staff AA, thief SB AA)
It is good to have some counterplay to stealth.

Thief stealth, especially in downed state, is kind of a joke right now. Long attack animations track through stealth/shadow stepping.
The recent patch made the downed skill 3 even harder to target/use since it fails if there is no clear path.
As for Shadow Refuge, use a skill that knocks back and you’ll reveal anyone knocked out of it, even downed players. Thieves have only one skill that gives stability and it’s an elite.
Bottom line, finding a thief inside Shadow Refuge is easy with a little knock back. And even if you don’t have knock back, bombard the area with aoe during it’s duration. The heals provided by Shadow Refuge are negligible and pretty much any aoe in the game not only counters the heals but outright kills if they try to tough it out.
/Should opposing players be able to find you when invisible in shadow refuge and recovering from a downed state?* Multiple times they run around random searching for a hit, then magically know right where to stand. Does damage show for opposing players? Should they be able to pummel you when invisible?
Why not, stealth doesn’t equal to invincibility.

Nitpicking: You can’t knockback downed players, only launch them. Eg, Updraft is a launch, while iWave is only a knockback.
