Hello!

I was spending my time in WvWvW yesterday, and at some point a thief using a SB + mesmar(he`s not important) were chasing me. I eventually died.

The combat log showed hits from the thief with the #1 of the short bow:
6×1600 (crit?)
1×600 (normal hit? but now much Crit dmg would he have?)

This means he had 6 big crits hits in a row, which means he was using Power + Preg gear?
I`d like to know if this is normal for the a SB build (if one such build does exists), what gear would such a build require, etc. As far as I know SB dmg was lowered in the recent patches, so this seamed strange.

As for me, I play an engineer, power / vit / toughness / crit gear, mixed up.

Thank you for your time.

It’s normal for a pure glass build, which most thieves seem to run.

Thief trait lines are easy to spec for glass, since one line contains power, and another line contains both precision and crit damage. Add that to full zerker/valk + divinity runes then 1600 seems pretty standard. Downside for a build such as this is that the HP pool is extremely restricted(full glass HP is 10850, zerker/valk mix is usually around 15000, with a much less crit chance)

cool, thx.

what %crit chance would a thief have in full zerker/valk? (he did not have fury / sigil stacks on him)

If he has like 15k hp, the crit chance would be around 60%+- (assuming 30 points in CS)
You can use gw2buildcraft.com to calculate that

The problem here is that you have very little to go on.

The damage only tells us that he should have in the ballpark of 100% crit damage. The crits themselves don’t tell us anything other than that he did not have 100% crit chance.

It’s perfectly possible for a Thief to reach 90%+ crit rate with some preparation. Things like 30 into Critical Strikes, Sigil of Perception, full Berserker gear, Precision Food and a Maintenance Oil make that possible.

I`d like to know if this is normal for the a SB build (if one such build does exists), what gear would such a build require, etc. As far as I know SB dmg was lowered in the recent patches, so this seamed strange.

I don’t think it was a shortbow build. You said that they were chasing you. Shortbow is a ranged weapon and it offers the top mobility of all Thief weapons. I think he was just chasing you with his swap weapon. Especially considering that he was with someone else and that the information you gave us would hint that he’s mostly GC.

what %crit chance would a thief have in full zerker/valk? (he did not have fury / sigil stacks on him)

Well without any foods, fury or sigils, 60% looks to be a good guess. Throw in precision oriented foods and it jumps to 70%. Throw up some traits and Sigils and it’ll go up to 100%. Though note that having such a high crit rate is pretty much never the best means of damage.

As for the damage that he dealt, I cannot really say without knowing how much armor you have. At the very least, you would have 1980 armor total, but it can go up a lot depending on your traits and gear. With 1980, the Thief would need a pretty low amount of 2250-2650 power to deal the kind of damage you took.

That also backs up the theory that he was mostly glass cannon.

My conclusion: You encountered a glass cannon thief who decided to use their Shortbow instead of their main weapon because you were being chased.

my suggestion to you is never run from a thief as there is a little chance that you can outrun him. Bather stay and fight maybe you get lucky

Thx for the input guys.
It is clear now.
I was just surprised that the guy could constantly hit for so much.

Let me add: especially if it is a sword/dagger thief. I had a warrior a couple of days ago, full health, while I had taken a few hits, try to run away from my S/D thief… Why? Is there a more pointless endeavor? Constant Immobilizes, cripples, teleports, boon rips, high damage… It’s not gonna happen.

You guys need to roll and engineer, get it to lv 80, gear/spec him the best you can, then encounter a thief + memsmar(both lv 80) on WvW and engage them. Tell me how it goes

Hmmm Engineers can be tricky, if there are more enemy’s go for engineer first. Hi dose not have that much defense but can trow to much condition to fight successful multiple enemy’s. Same goes for necro, the only difference is that engineer immobilize-stun you more, and necro has way much health.

In any case running away from thief is not a good option.

If they’re any good you’ll be destroyed, like any other 1 vs 2. There’s no 1 vs 2 in this game where, given similar skill, the 1 has any chance to win.

If they’re crap, which a lot of players are, on the other hand, it’s quite possible.
