Unfortunately, a sniping weapon would almost certainly be broken on a thief. Even if the weapon set itself had no mobility, or stealth, you’d easily be able to hit “~” to swap weapons whenever someone got within a moderate range, get some distance, and refuge to wherever you please. Even if it’s balanced to not be overpowered, it’d be a frustrating thing to fight.
Also, you’re all wrong, thieves definitely need axes more than anything. I need me some brigand-type action.

Yeah you blow fire at me and it blinds them or something like that. We’d have to find a way to work stealth onto the torch.

I’m lately comparing everything from pve perspective, cause thats what I do the most nowdays. And there p/p is getting crushed by other ranged options, mainly because of crap auto attack. I would say that shortbow possibly has better dps because of much better auto attack and cluster bombs which does 2x less damage then unload but eats 2 less initiative so is more spammable, not to mention possibility of evades, poison fields and inf arrow on shortbow.

I’d prefer a offhand sword but you could just do a revealed when you charge up a snipershot. it should also be chargeable so the longer you hold it the more damage it’l do. the damage with full initiative shuld be 15 % stronger than killshot circa. but offhand sword first!

Longbow seems to be one of the more thematically appropriate weapons besides. Sniping very much fits within the realm of a quite assassin-type character.
Frankly I’d prefer it if ANet doesn’t fix the ranger in a way where they deal halfway-decent ranged DPS with a longbow, but that’s pretty unlikely.
Longbow and rifle both make sense and don’t make sense. Longbow is less flavorful but much more practical for a thief/assassin, whereas a rifle is certainly more flavorful but is indeed not mobile, quite clunky and heavy, difficult/slow to shoot, and not at all really a “good match” for the thief. I’d much rather see rifle be reworked for engi so that the weapon isn’t just trash-tier and can perform the sniper role well.
At the very least, it gives players the option to be ranged DPS/archer, something which the ranger is incapable of and the warrior is just nothing like seeing as it’s a heavy that uses a bow to shoot exploding fireballs (who seriously came up with that idea?).

I’m amazed at the foreknowledge in this thread. Do tell, my fellow psychics, how did you guys manage to predict so far in to the future that 1200 range weapons would be OP/broken? What techniques do you use? Tarot? Tea leaves?

If the skills didn’t include anything for stealth/leap finishers, I don’t think there would be any balance problems.
A longbow would fix the whole lack of the archer role thing, and frankly, the only justification behind rifle flavor-wise is the predator :P

Right. A pistol is a concealable, lightweight, and simply less-loud firearm also aimed at being used when skirmishing/playing well with the highly mobile thug/bandit role.
Rifle doesn’t really do much aside from the whole “stealthy sniper” thing, however Thieves are designed to also be very mobile in fights, something a large rifle is just not made to do well with in most cases historically, practically, and in many instances of fantasy.
Not to mention the longbow solves the archer problem and doesn’t detract from another medium armor rifle-wielder which both has access to stealth and is designed to not be mobile which deserves a weapon rework.

I’m kind of sick of the idea that being a thief means always being quiet. Stealth is a tactic, not a lifestyle choice. The style of the thief is not stealth, it is evasion. Stealth certainly helps fill that goal, but so does being nimble or using misdirection. Dual Pistols and Shortbow are obviously not quite weapons, so I find it silly to expect that every other weapon a thief could choose must be.
A rifle is no harder to carry around than a shortbow. A weapon is only as unbalanced as the developer makes it, so I don’t find that a compelling counter-argument for any weapon as I could effectively make that argument for every potential weapon and then we’d never have anything new. Weapons for thief do not need to be silent, but they do need to be cunning.
rifle would be nice if it was atleast 1200, give us a bit more of a ranged option, and dual swords, off hand sword could focus on things like parries and what not

I imagine if thieves got a rifle or longbow, there would be zero abilities that utilized stealth. (aside from an ability that is used from stealth, like the other weapons, perhaps a crit shot, like from DAoC)

Would like a rifle with a unique stealth attack. Instead of a killshot type stealth attack (OP) it would be a burst of shots such like a machine gun, the total damage of which would be higher than a backstab but would be easily dodgeable much like sneak attack from P/D. Also give it the ability to pierce so thieves can actually have a role in zerg fighting.
