Q:
Some info about Thief for a newbie
Welcome to the game! Honestly, I could load you with a bunch of stuff about how to be a great thief, but first you should learn the basics of the game. Learn the pve mechanics, how skills work, how to get items, etc. Once you’ve done that, try to do a little bit of hot join pvp. Dont be sad if u get wrecked, its not that thief is bad, its that its hard to play effectively. Learn how to fight opponents better. I would recommend watching Sizer’s gameplay on Twitch TV, hes a really good player and I learned my advanced tactics from watching him. For PVE endgame, go full glass. While leveling though, u can do whatever you want since it won’t matter in the end. In pvp, u should use sword/dagger 20066 build. It will be INCREDIBLY difficult to play at first. If u find yourself frustrated, play a warrior for a bit until u feel you can beat others. Warrior is the easiest class to play, and is more forgiving for new players if they’re having trouble with other classes.
Good luck
I’m not coming back, not that you care.
I’d say anything works in solo PVE. Just don’t forget to update your gear!
I would recommend shortbow to be able to move around the world faster, together with either sword/pistol(decent cleave damage and extra mobility) or dagger/pistol(good single target damage and mobility).
in PVP there are many playstyles. S/D 2/0/0/6/6 is undoubtedly one of the most decent and popularized ones, so it’s a good place to start.
Thank you very much, what should I use for PvE? What do you guys recommend?
Thanks again
I would also very much appreciate a pvp and/or a pve link so that i know the skills and traits if thats not too much of a trouble
d/p or s/p are good for pve. +sb.
Welcome to Guild wars. http://en.gw2skills.net and http://wiki.guildwars2.com have tons of information. Start with the first for an easy to read list of weapon skills and utility abilities.
Now, since a change that was made to the game earlier this year, builds don’t have a huge effect on solo leveling pve.
Here is what to do from someone who just finished leveling a thief solo.
Starting around level 7 you can equip two weapon sets and switch between them on the fly with the ~ key. For solo pve leveling the Sword and Pistol (S/P) combo can not be beat. The number 5 key gives you a 4 second blind field around you, so any mobs right there can’t hit you for 4 seconds. The number 2 skill lets you quickly move up to a bad guy but also hitting it again lets you quickly move back. More importantly however, is every time you use the “move back” part you clear a negative condition on you. Bleeding? Just hit 2 twice. Even works out of combat. The number 3 attack will interrupt an attack from a bad guy and then do a fast three swing attack that not only will hit up to 3 guys, but also makes you dodge during it so you can’t be hit. For your utility skills go with the signets. The healing signet plus number 3 attack with s/p will fill your health back up to almost full from really low. Then there are signets for power, and precision, and then I switch between the signet that gives you an extra initiative every 10 seconds and the one that lets you run faster.
For your secondary weapons you can either carry a ShortBow (sb) or Pistol Pistol(p/p). Shortbow is good for groups of 4-5 but takes some learning. P/P is single target but very strong. Use skill 3 and then start it again before it ends to keep the extra damage stacking up. From a full initiative bar you can chain 3, skill 3s. Plus it looks cool.
Every 10 levels go to the Auction house and buy new weapons and armor. Go for items that have +power and +precision. Power makes you hit harder and precision makes you have critical hits (more damage than normal) more.
Feel free to add me as a friend in game and ask me questions when you get confused.
oh and here is a great link just filled with tips http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Tips I wish I had known some of these when I first started. A couple of the tips are outdated, but mainly its a great amount of info.

Thank you very much, would you care to share your insight about PvP as well?
Thank you once more, helped A LOT!
I haven’t done any PVP. From what I understand thief’s are good at roaming around in WvW and using stealth skills to run away instead of dying. All of the major builds though require level 80 to have enough trait points.
Well when you say pvp it depends, do you mean WvW or spvp? In spvp thieves are all generally very squishy but do a ton of dmg. The role of a thief is to pick off the low health targets in team fights to swing the fight in your teams favor, and to fly around the map helping in outnumbered situations or creating outnumbered situations, with your shortbow and teleports. Most spvp builds will use Sw/d and SB
In WvW its a different story. Stealth decaps points in this game. Since there aren’t really any points to capture in WvW many thieves will run with d/d or d/p and go heavily into shadow arts to get really good survivability and sustain, while still going heavily into critical strikes to get some good burst as well. To stealth with d/p you drop the #5 (black powder) which is a smoke combo field, and then use the #2 (heart seeker) which is a leap finisher
Thank you!
Would you say thief is a weak/strong asset to team in spvp or WvW and why?
In spvp thieves are absolutely essential, i dont think theres ever been a winning team without one. In WvW thieves are a great addition to any small group, but once the numbers get over 5ish people some other profession would probably be more beneficial. Thieves are amazing solo and small group roamers however
Can you guys give me some tips about what sort of armor I should aim for sPvP and WvW please (berserk, celestial etc)
thanks!
