i was thinking the same but figured i was asking for too much lol!
If it can take you across ledges, then it’s better for one very simple reason; it uses the mechanics of a teleport, not a “shadowstep”.

True, but even so, you could not teleport to very awkward places. Which makes me wonder, why not treat shadowstep as a teleport but restrict the “places” you can teleport to (towers, keeps and such from wvw come to mind.) I mean, who wants a crap blink that is glitchy.
It’s just a suggestion to see if anet could fix it.
that because in release people would shadow step in to tower + keeps so anet had to change how it worked so at time it just alittle sketchy. xD it pretty gay when you just be like lololol wall for noobs straight to lord room with me

Edited comment to answer what your change would lead to :P I agree it’s sketchy, but due to exploit it’s hard to bypass it.

Shadow Step – 10 seconds
not a big deal if you can get back after 15 seconds.
its not like youre leaving the tower, run to your spawn, wait 1 hour, get back to the tower and shadow return inside.
Its by far not as bad as the perma stealth thief trolling in a keep.
I’d say Shadow Return should work like a teleport, as long as the distance
between the player and the Shadow Return spot is below 1200.
If above it should return the player 1200y and follow ground pathing.

so where is the big difference to staying inside the tower? it just extends the area the thief can use by ~1100 range arount the tower

It makes perma stealthing in a recently captured tower so much easier? That 1100 extra range around the tower makes a huge difference cause if someone follows you out, they’ll have to run around the entire tower to get back in when you port back in.
Also you can feign leaving the tower and return in it in stealth without them noticing with a well traited stealth build.
I’m not argueing that the shadowsteps should be fixed, but I don’t think this would work.
