With the new evades that throw daggers and cause condis, anyone have any luck with a staff/condi thief? Relying on lots of dodging and torment etc?
Staff doesn’t really have any damaging conditions, so it’s not a good choice for a condi build.
At best I could see using it as a pve tank with condition duration to extend the weakness and blinds. Condition damage, however, is not something staff should be used for.
Just a tad confused on how to build around staff, I love the playstyle, almost monk-ish.
Build it as a damage/crit set, same as d/p or d/d
You’ll use mostly the same gear and runes, take either bound or dash for the dodge.
You can skip shadow arts and in stead take acrobatics or another damage trait line as staff and the DD line have enough built in survival tools that you can run them as stealthless builds.

Lotus Training is not that great for applying condition IMO — I abused the heck out of it the last BWE and it’s not what I expected. You have a better result in applying bleeding and torment using P/D.

This. It’s great as a supplement to a condition build to make it better, but you can’t create a built solely focused on the effects on a dodge ability. If you really like lotus, I highly reccommend rolling a condition D/D deathblossom build, as lotus was designed primarily around bumping up that sort of evasive/condi build.
With staff though, you’re going to be much better off looking at the other options.
I’d build staff similar to a Sword build. Something like this could be an option. I tend to make rather thematic builds, so take that into account.
In PvE sure since a monkey could do most PvE. In WvW/PvP… ooph.
The only conditions staff gives are blind, weakness, and copious amounts of vulnerability. It’s a power weapon through and through, no condi potential whatsoever.
The daredevil trait line has some small potential as an alternative for condi builds that also run acrobatics, but the first trait option is utterly useless unless you decide to use the new ‘physical’ utility skills.

Here. It’s not perfect by any means, but it’s what I’ve been rolling with and I’ve been having a blast.
Generally— Apply Venom, Steal in, Hook them, Impairing Daggers when they’re on the ground, and blind them ASAP, then just whack ‘em. The blind/chill/vulnerability on your staff is just there to provide a buffer so they have more conditions to remove. It’s not perfect, but it’s fun. Spam dodges, drop caltrops and lotus daggers everywhere, have a blast.
Condi thief & staff has No point, IMO. No synergy with DD.
Condi thief is… mediocre / not wanted in groups.
Slim chance that this will change, again IMO.
Condi thief may well be viable, but I doubt any optimal build will run it with staff. I guess staff + p/d would be the closest thing and you use staff only in a defensive fashion. (It is a great defensive weapon)
Good luck.
