Staff is what thieves wanted
Elite spec is to fill the empty spot inside a class.
Thieves have being QQing for a long long time that they can only play as zerker and nothing else is viable.Hint:
What role thieves never able to play in PvP and WvW?
it has some thing to do for being on point.
You got valid point. And moreover,I would like to see it.But as far as thieves wanted,I think it is andOH sword.

don’t assume you represent all theives
What role theives never able to play in PvP and WvW?
range. why? cause all their good skills are melee or close up
shortbow is a shadow step/explosion spam weapon. not good for constant damage from range
pistol…..yeah….pistol/pistol enough said. it FAILED
pistol with dagger is a stealth spam. not a constant damage (or dmg at all really. its a time delay. designed for evading dmg and ends up closer range rather than actual range)
theif has always been in melee, doing bursts of dmg. (or constant dmg with a weaker build)
what doesn’t it have.
ranged constant dmg.
or good burst ranged dmg. (pistol pistol failed. shortbow needs ground targeting and so misses movign stuff)
add to all this pistol range is capped at 900 now. no 1050 range.
thieves miss 2 things
- any other but roaming role
- good ranged option
it is hard to stay optimistic though~
[Teef] guild :>
Thieves cannot stand on point during team fights currently. All they can do is linger around fights and close in for a quick attack or two before retreating away from all the killer AoEs and melee cleaves thrown around.
A staff could help for that and allow a more “brawler” fighting style.
thieves have always wanted two things since i started playing beta. First is an off-hand sword, second was Rifle. Honestly staff was thrown from pretty much nowhere recently.
What I hope for is a rifle. This is for two reasons. One is I think it could be incorporated in a cool way to have charging skills that drain initiative the longer you have it charged for more damage. The second is it would give an excuse to alter the steal mechanic to something similar with the exception of being able to maintain range. This would be beneficial not only to the rifle but the P/P and SB builds as well.
For the most part , excluding the ele, these elite specs are giving classes something that they lacked while also trying to benefit the tools it already has. Two things pop up into mind for things they lack. One is a strong defensive set the other is a slow yet strong range option. So in a sense both rifle and staff(if made into a defensive weapon set) could be something that thief lacked.

oh! offhand sword! love it!
3 skill would be executioner beheading =D (scissor slice)
I hope for a rifle (with piercing) with great mechanics and always a great skill for mobility.
And possibly a good remove condi on specialization line.

Agreed.
Even rifle has always been a secondary, many have just hoped they’d fix P/P since it’s always been a bit lacking, and still do to some extent. Maybe we will get luck at some point and they will actually give traits to make it the range we’d like to see.
Staff just came outa no where and frankly i’m sure there is a bunch that could care less. Just be another disappointment for thief IMO.
Now OH-Sword? Off Hand sword has been asked for since beta, and since pre-release it still comes up every now and again. It is also the one i’d be most hopeful for. Thieves are also the masters of skill based dual wielding (not force / brute strength) by all accounts in fantasy, shame we seemed to have missed the boat in GW2 for this.
To each their own of course though.

range is never viable in any form, no class can ever be pure range, even mesmershortbow is a shadow step/explosion spam weapon. not good for constant damage from range

1.I don’t represent thief, because i don’t main it.
the most common argument when used to protect the thief and the most valid one, is thief has no other roles other then DPS
2. i doubt if you play pvp, range is never represented as a role in gw2, there’s only roles like DPS, bruiser, bunker etc. there’s no role called a range( it’s more like a a form of attacking) and no class can ever be pure range, not even mesmer nor ranger nor killshot and thief has its fair share of ranged pressure through constant poison field, cluster bomb, weakness and aoe auto, so i seriously don’t understand what you talking about, except in PvE, where thief is pretty weak in range, then tbh…i don’t even want to talk about it

that is like removing necro, ranger, mesmer and ele from the game. you sure you play Gw2? range defo have a place in all around gw2.
I was sceptical about the staff thieves at first, but I think it makes sense. I still hope that they get rifles at some point, but a staff isn’t bad. It’s a two-handed melee option, something they’ve never had. Moreover, if Anet wants to introduce more melee staff moves apart from Revenents, thieves are probably the best way to do it, apart from maybe warriors.
I continue to be baffled as to why people want an off-hand sword so badly. Thieves are already well-covered in the dual-wielding department. It wouldn’t give them anything they don’t already have.

Staff would go against the dual skill system thiefs currently have. Rifles would fill a space thiefs currently lacking (long range damage). Thiefs lost the ricochet trait which means no increased range anymore. These are strong reasons for the rifle.
Yeah cause Rifle will work perfectly with the dual skill system :p
Thief lack staying power in melee. Staff can very well provide them with a fighting style allowing that.
Yeah cause Rifle will work perfectly with the dual skill system :p
Rifle = range combat (like shortbows u know)

Like Pistol you know. Pistol that works with dual skill system.
You are grasping at straws here.
I think we are most likely to get OH torch :P
(or MH mace)

You missed the part where I was arguing for staves, not against rifles. Sure, rifles would be good for rogues. So are staves.

Not really. The whole discussion about staffs is. There are too much (good) reasons why thiefs don’t get one.
- Ranger is getting one already
- Rifle would fill the space for long range combat
- Rifle wouldn’t hurt the current dual skill system
- Ricochet gone (no increased range for pistols anymore, so a new range option is even more important)
- Thiefs are deadly killers, not stick wielding monks. It will simply not fit the class theme.
- Thiefs already have a wide toolset of melee options. Staffs wouldn’t add something gamechanging, unless you want a change for the sake of change.
Chances are high that if it’s not the rifle, the thief will get an offhand sword instead of a staff. Sword offhand isn’t used for an additional elite spec currently. Engineers won’t get it since they only have the pistol main hand. That would feel weird. Also they have the rifle and the preview is showing that they get the hammer. Warriors already have sword offhand AND rifle. So whats left? Not much. Rangers will get the staff for sure, everything else is revealed.
Thiefs aren’t really magical based, so scepter/focus won’t it be. Axes and maces aren’t practical for a thief (my opinion). The only thing left would be the torch. Could work, but i have my doubts if it fits the theme in a logical way.
Rifles will damage thieves playstyle.

thieves got pistol mainhand too, this dosn’t feel weird? altough I think not.But engi already getting hammer.
1. Not a valid reason. Strong suggestion already that two elite specs are getting shield too
2. Possible, and staff would fill the space for a resilient melee weapon that thief lacks
3. That doesn’t make sense at all. Rifle is a 2H weapon, like Staff. Both will not allow you to use the dual skill system
4. That’s just a repeat of the fact that rifle will probably be long range
5. And Guardians do not fit the longbow. Elite specs aren’t limited by such considerations anyway
6. Thieves got one valid melee weapon : main hand dagger. Currently main hand sword is rather poor especially since dagger got cleave 2 and the nerfs to the survivability of S/D
Offhand sword will not happen anytime soon because D/S and P/S make no sense sense as a set. When people say they want offhand sword, they always mean then want S/S. Since there’s no provision nor any clean way to make D/S and P/S work, offhand sword role is best done by giving thieves a new two handed weapon instead. Like a staff.
“Sword offhand isn’t used for an additional elite spec currently” No kidding. And neither is sword main hand, axe main hand, mace main hand, dagger main hand, pistol main hand, scepter, axe offhand, mace offhand, dagger offhand, pistol offhand, torch, focus, shortbow.
Speak for yourself OP and condi/celestial thief exist even if nerfed pretty much only d/p didn’t get a real nerf. The only special thing about staff would be a block unless it’s a range staff.

One of the main things that draw me to GW2 is that it doesn’t concern itself with what “makes sense” in terms of weapon selection, unlike most RPGs. Sense, of course, doesn’t enter into it – just fossilized tradition.
Just what s stealth class needs, 1200 range attack. /sarcasm
I want greatsword …
If Thieves get rifle, I want P/P to be given some love as well. A gunslinger elite spec would be awesome.
I have no problem with melee staff either.
Either way, A-Net is getting a kick out of the forums because they know HoT isn’t coming until 2016.
Perhaps our elite specialization is an underwater version :o
gw1 – healing signet/frenzy/charge
New thief elite spec : Honorary Largos. I could get behind that if it includes a Largos cosplay set !
If thieves got rifle that would be toxic as kitten lol it would get nerfed to nothing before release
staff is what YOU wanted.

There are ways to balance it out. For example it could deal high damage with long wind up. Like my idea in a earlier post. Have it drain ini the longer you keep it charged for higher damage. I doubt the weapon set would make stealth available and would make thieves rely on using their utilities for that. I think they need to improve the range options for thief. Have the pistol be more fast paced and have rifle be slow paced and about management of initiative to get the most out of it. P/P right now is really hurting and if they make a elite spec out of rifle it would most likely also benefit p/p as well.
